The Paleogene (65-23 Million years ago) was the first and longest Period of the Cenozoic Era. consists of the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene epochs. After the 5th mass extinction that wiped out around 70% of life, The Earth started to progressively recover. Mammals especially would get the chance to diversify and occupy all the niches left vacant by the non avian Dinosaurs.

What I love about paleontology is that there’s an almost infinite number of awesome creatures to discover. There’s always something new, bigger or weirder than the previous one. Sometimes I can’t wrap my head around the fact that most people don’t care or are even bored by this. How can you be bored by knowing that such incredible animals existed ?!

out of the thousands of extinct species found, only relatively few of them can be described as "amazing" by average people. Most are not much different from modern animal, have generic body features, or just too incomplete to be reconstructed.

3:28 It's really awe inspiring to look at Paraceratherium and see how absolutely enormous it is. It's crazy this wasn't even the largest terrestrial mammal that ever lived, that honor goes to the Straight Tusked Elephant. It's even crazier knowing that the largest animal that ever lived is also a mammal, the Blue Whale, and it is still extant today. Right now on this planet, there is a gargantuan sea mammal that is larger than any other extant or extinct animal, and this animal that is the largest animal ever eats tiny creatures that are smaller than your fingertip.

OMG, i really love the paleogene animals!! They are familiar and alien at the same time, it's basically a lost world! Also, i really love all the color and patterns you came up for them! Many modern paleoartists have the tendency of taking the colors of an extant animal and slap onto an extinct one, and i find this so boring, so i'm really glad that you took your time not only to research and draw them, but to invent color patterns that are likely lost to time now! ❤

think the Paleogene is the most interesting and symbolic segment of the Cenozoic. The world was gradually recovering from the KPG extinction. Mammals and the last dinosaurs began to occupy large, specialized and dominant niches. I am a little sad that multituberculates, non placental and non marsupial eutherians and metatherians, non crocodilian crocodylomorphs and other groups of animals did not survive to this day. At least we should be grateful to them for giving us a place.

This video is amazing, i love how not only did you bring attention to a variety of unique animals from this time period but also gave them color schemes and patterns that are different from what you'd expect and doesn't fall into the trap of typical browns and greys - the Numidotherium, Gobiatherium, and Borissiakia especially. Also, just a thought, Artiodactyla is truly an incredible group. They produced the largest ocean predators ever seen, the most efficient land herbivores in history, and some of the biggest mammal carnivores ever to walk the Earth all within like 60 million years

Yes! My boy Numidotherium made it in! As well as the newly described Dentaneosuchus! I was so surprised by the new additions, like Presbyornis, Diacodexis, Eusmilus, and Niolamia. I didn't think I'd see them in one of these videos. But they were done so well! I always love the obscure creatures you throw in for flavor with the more popular ones. This video made me realize how diverse this period is. I'd love to see documentaries about these animals. There's so much more than just mammals.
