Tell us what’s really happening over there. In the midst of bombing, suffering, propaganda, and escalation, I’m interviewing folks in the Levant region to get some answers from multiple perspectives. Thank you @noam_joon for joining. We are both comedians, but heads up, we laugh like 2 times. Comedy will resume later. Clarity first.

Sammy, we met after your last NYC show. Something I did not tell you then, but that I am telling you now, is that one of the reasons I’m such a huge fan of yours is that every time that there is a conflict flareup between Israel and Palestine, bits of that conflict spill over into other countries, and Jews like me fear becoming the targets. And one of my rituals now for dealing with the anxiety and dread that produces is watching your comedy. You deal with this topic in a way that is so human and compassionate and even silly, in a way that reminds me that no matter how bad things get, there are still are good people everywhere, and it gives me hope that the desire for peace will eventually win out.

@@SammyObeidComedythe description of this video is repulsive Sammy. Literally equating Palestine with "Israel" is the dumbest thing you can do these days. "Israelis" have two ethical choices if they were actual ethical human beings: either renounce their nationality/citizenship or simply leave Palestine.

God bless the peace loving. I just want to say that it is perfectly understandable that the events of 7 Oct would make the blood boil, and cause anger and grief; people on the edge and unable to sympathise with the Palestinian cause because they are consumed by shock, grief, rage and trauma, rightly. After a day’s attack and 1400 deaths. She had to even say she hopes there would be no revenge. I therefore cannot even begin to fathom or imagine or pretend to understand the amount of anger, grief, misery, rage, trauma and horror; the edginess, the desire for revenge that would exist in a people after 75 years of siege, oppression, violence, attacks, arbitrary detentions, rapes, torture and murders of children.

It is heartbreaking that the civilians living in the villages where hostages were taken were largely if not 100% a community of people who actively sought and worked towards an end to the occupation, just as in this womans story about the man who protected palestinian shepherds in the West Bank. Has anyone seriously considered whether the IDF the govt found it easier to kill their own as in the Hannibal directive because these were an israeli community who were at the extreme of anti netanyahu citizens? Is that question really so insensitive? Is it not at all possible? That said, this womans words are so important in helping me observing this really with only humanity as my one commonality across the vast miles. Such an important conversation. I hope this woman is safe. It would be so good to hear her words now. I pray shes safe 🙏 Thank you for this, sending love ❤️

The problem starts with those who are extreme in their belief that either palestinians or Israelis don't deserve to be in the land. I feel a single democratic state will be the best option, but this will require empathy to each other and, most importantly, justice for those who committed atrocities both by Hamas and Israel side.

Well we´ve got proof from the IDF attack helicopter now and I for one do not believe there are too many women with flowing hair in Hrrrramaz, particularly not unarmed and running with other young people of similar age, who, coincidentally weren´t armed either. Now I am no IDF attack helicopter pilot, but if I saw a bunch of cars driving away with said unarmed runners I probably wouldn´t have gone full Daenerys Targaryen with my Hellfire missiles... Anyway... Great talk Sammy! Much appreciated! Would be interesting to hear a follow up at some point. Take care!

It’s many months passed since this interview was recorded. So many more deaths, so much more evidence of atrocities in Gaza and escalating in West Bank and Wast Jerusalem. I’ve spent the last few months learning as much as I could, because before Oct 7th I couldn’t even point to Palestine or Israel on a map and didn’t know the difference between Hamas or Isidro Al Quaeda…I am university educated, but was wholly ignorant. So I wanted to change that. I was truly shocked to learn the history going back to the late 1800s and the rampant anti-semitism in all of Europe and Russia. I had learned it was just the Germans…those bad Nazis. Despite having studied history in high school for 5 years and covering both WW1 and WW2 in detail, I was not edu-fed the details or even broad strokes of settler colonialism that contributed to both wars, and the very specific British double dealings circa WW1 which birthed the Palestine-Israeli conflict. As a British person - born in Scotland but descant from Irish great grand parents who fled brutal British occupation of Ireland - I was shocked to learn about the impact of British settler colonialism not just in Palestine but all around the world and in my and ancestral home of Ireland. More recently I’ve been learning about The Settlers…and it’s beyond shocking. What has become clear to me, is there are people to blame for this, but I don’t think it’s the Palestinian people in any form: those who tried peaceful protest for years and got their knew caps shot off, nor those who took up arms and participated in the largest prison break in the world. None of the violence is ok, but I do understand why it got this way. And Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims, Christians did not create this situation. That is one thing I have become crystal clear on. It has taken me months to undo my own ignorance and face the biases instilled in me - subconsciously - about the semetic world (in the official definition sense of the word semetic). I can tell you that growing up in the west we do think we are more civilized. We absolutely do. We don’t even realize it. We think we are superior. It’s in our DNA and I’m as shocked to admit it as I was to realize it about myself and the community and the environment I grew up and got educated in. It’s hard to really listen to someone else’s point of view when you start out with a certainty that you’re right. While I realize that it’s important to continue to learn and talk and listen and share etc…, I do feel that there is a point at which a person must - in a situation of oppression - take a stance. To paraphrase Desmond Tutu…if you’re neutral during oppression, you chose the side of the oppressor. I do not choose the oppressor, I do not choose Israel. And if and when Israelis learn the same history and current events as I have learned in last few months, they wouldn’t choose Israel either, unless they are the evil sort that rules the current government, or the settlers leading the physical and violent charge of ethnically cleansing the West Bank and East Jerusalem. There’s something rotten in the State of Israel. This is not, in my view, of getting the Palestinians to the table and agreeing not to be so violent or terroristy. Israel cannot stop itself so it needs to be stopped, if there is to be any hope for Israelis and Palestinians alike. Lastly, just want to say to you that I really appreciate your comedy because it’s a tool that all of us can use to break the ice so to speak with all of our ‘liberal’ friends and colleagues in the west who feel too uncomfortable not only to speak about this, but to learn about it: to take an honest to god look in the mirror and say, “why the hell ate we doing this? How on earth can our governments do this in our name?” There’s a great line in Animal Farm : “all pigs are equal but some are more equal than others”. While that was an allegory of communist Stalin Russia, I think of that in terms of cross borders and cross ethnicities. We really do need to believe that we are all equal, and not with the unspoken subtext that “some are more equal than others”. That’s the bias I had to first identify in myself: and I swear, once identified, it’s demolished in an instant. It just takes truth and knowledge and a willingness to take a stab e not because it’s comfortable or popular or acceptable, but because it’s right. I think Israelis, having been heavily indoctrinated for decades will have a very steep uphill battle in challenging this, especially at their time of undoubtably grief. But I hope they learn truth of the events not only of Oct 7 2023, but the events of every day in Palestine since the early 1900s when the Zionists first began to immigrate to Palestine and were promptly supported by the British army after WW1, being awarded more rights than the native indigenous Palestinian people simply because the incoming immigrants were largely white Europeans, and clever Theodor Herzl did a deal with the British government. It has nothing to do with native Palestinians. They were then, and are now, the victims, the oppressed, and they are not responsible now or ever for their oppression, no matter how violently they resist it. That is the side i take. Edit: for clarity: I don’t hate Israelis. I don’t hate Jews. Of course. But I’m having a pretty hard time not hating those responsible for this genocide in Israel, UK, US and Europe. And I hope they all are held to account by the ICJ and ICC, as countries and personally. And let the ICC determine the fate of those responsible in Hamas for what they have done too. We have international systems to deal with this if only the U.S., UK and Israel would STOP preventing them from working.

It is hard for me to imagine the arrogance of going from what you admit to be complete ignorance to, in the span of only “a few months”, deciding the blame lies entirely on one side, and that those who broke from their “prison” that looked like a sandals resort bore no responsibility for burning so many civilians alive. What resources did you read that gave you such conviction.

Most Israeli are not from Europe but Middle East. It's a myth they spread that the Israeli came from Europe. Yes, 30% or more did, but not majority. After 1948 there was a massive influx of nearby Jewish people.
@13ciaran13000
@13ciaran13000 5 месяцев назад
This. But also why would it matter if Jews were from Europe? Distance? Some places in Europe are pretty close to the Levant -- much closer than say Morocco for instance. Is it because Europe has a long history of colonialism? Well first off, so does the middle east. But also in terms of Europe, that's really only a few countries, and the list doesn't even include most of the historical centres of Ashkenazi population. And even so, Jews were never really a part of the power structures involved in European colonialism. We were generally pariahs with our own societies largely seperate from whatever countries we happened to live in. Is it because Yaakov from Long Island went viral online for kicking a Palestinian out of her home that one time, and everyone still has pent up rage from watching that video? Well okay, yeah, that was pretty bad, and definitely highlights some very real injustices that are going on in Israel. But anecdotes are not data, and telling a bunch of Holocaust survivors (let alone a bunch of Mizrahim) to go back to Europe is not how we are going to move forward

I really like your work, and I really appreciate your attempt to show both sides, it's important and sacred, but as an Israeli I have to say that the Israeli point of view is not reflected at all in this video, I won't expand on it too much because I doubt anyone will even see the reaction, but you have to understand, Israel has gone through a trauma as severe as 9/11, Israel must react, we are afraid, every person in Gaza scares us, I have friends who were kidnapped or those who were murdered in a barbaric manner, we feel insecure but this is nothing new. It's clear to me that the situation in Gaza is much worse, and my heart goes out to every innocent person who loses their life there too, it's not fair, but how does their government expect Israel to react when they go in and kill babies and say it's up to them, Israel is trying to act in the most moral way it can, to inform before that it bombs or puts humanitarian aid equipment into a literal siege, which country informs its enemy in advance where it is going to shoot so that he can defend himself. Politically I am so opposed to the government, but we must defend ourselves and as long as Hamas exists Israel will experience more and more atrocities. The only way to believe that one day the Palestinians will have rights is to eliminate Hamas from the face of the earth. Hamas is ISIS
@MollyRichardson247
@MollyRichardson247 6 месяцев назад
I can understand your fears and reactions. But there are many things to think about. H*mas was funded and propped up by N*tanyahu gov for his own political greed. Think from a pal*stinians perspective. Their lands continue to be taken away by the settlers , their houses demolished , they and their young kids are attacked , detained without charge , beaten , k*lled, their houses raided at night. Their water , food controlled. People in G*za cannot come or leave, they are b*mbed after every few years (mowing the lawn), they cannot seek medical attention outside unless approved by Isra l. They dont have anyone to turn to, international organizations do not stop Is ra l even though human rights have called it an apartheid regime and called ga za an open air prison. Ppl are stopped routinely from going to Al A q s a and the worshippers have been attacked during R amadan every year for the past few years. Its not just P a lestinians lost their land and should get over it and learn to live in peace. Its that they are continuing to lose land and continue to be oppressed. N*tanyahu has said that he wont let p a lestinians have a state and every year UN resolution is rejected by I sr al and US. So, as I understand how you must be feeling , you should also be able to understand how P a lestinians are feeling and this vicious cycle of violence is not benefitting either one. I think they need to come together and undertsand each other and realize perhaps that they are more similar than different. Perhaps both of them are afraid of the other and angry at the injustices carried out by the gov.

Killing 20,000 civilians (1/3 are children) u call this MORAL!!! And you're calling people of Gaza: the enemy!! You just say that your heart goes for innocent people in Gaza, just to feel good about yourself or to look good!!.. but deep inside you see us (civilians) the enemy!! And you just justify the massive BLIND killing!!! You justify bombing schools, hospitals, leaving babies suffocate in incubators after cutting the electricity!! On the other hand we can justify the killing of the 1400 Israelis (were not all civilians BTW... many of them if not all were from the IOF) by defending ourselves from the 75 years oppression, bombing, taking thousands of hostages... using your pov how else can we defend ourselves? How can we react?

Interested in hearing if your perspective has changed over two months? Do you think your government handled the response well? Does Israel feel safer today than it did when this was posted? I agree Hamas did an atrocity and it only caused more pain and animosity. I also hope all hostages and prisoners of the occupation will be freed. One last question, do you believe the Israeli government cared about the hostages over the past couple months since posting? Thanks it’d be interesting to hear from someone who is/was pro-Israel. For context I’m an American who was strongly opposed to our government’s actions following 9/11 and see it as a national embarrassment.
