Many people associate "palette knife painting" with the look of thick impasto and broad handling. But it's a tool that can also deliver fine lines, smooth gradations, and delicate textures in oil painting.

I will be forever grateful to Bob Ross for showing me how easy it is to make all sorts of patterns and textures with a few quick strokes of a palette knife that would be almost impossible to recreate using just brushes. My favourite trick is scraping a small roll of thick paint to create a rough, broken pattern for EG snow on a rocky slope, bark on a tree or cliffs in the distance. Also, using the edge of the knife to scrape out lines in a fresh layer of paint can be incredibly effective to suggest grass, twigs, hair, etc. In my experience it's easier to draw a clean, narrow long line (like a cat's whisker) by removing paint in this way than it is by adding paint with the side of the knife.

Seriously impressed by the versatility and control of painting knives, that I hadn't anticipated. I have a few questions that are perhaps best answered by watching the full video or trying things for myself; but one other comes up - can I ask why you switched caps on the bottle of cobalt drier?
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney 5 лет назад
The child proof safety cap didn't work anymore, and I discovered that I could just replace it with a cap from a seltzer bottle.

I don't think it very likely that most large theropods were fluffy. Towards the poles or in high mountainous regions a penguin coat would have been a beneficial adaptation for Tyrannosaurs and such, but in a (sub)-tropical climate, on an animal that size, it would increase the risk of overheating more than it would provide benefits in heat retention. The greater the volume/surface ratio, the better an an organism is at retaining heat, so the less need there is to provide further insulation, unless there's an ice age on. Consider modern-day elephants and rhinos, both bulky, large-bodied mammals that have lost most of their fur because it would be a detriment to them on the scorching Serengeti. Insofar as these large theropods may have had feathers, I would expect them to be ornamental crests on the head and neck or wing-like display features on the arms to attract mates and/or threaten rivals.
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney 3 года назад
True, but keep in mind that feathers can protect the skin even in large bodied dinosaurs hot, sunny climates (think ostriches).
@AliRadicali
@AliRadicali 3 года назад
@@JamesGurney I think ostriches and cassowaries are more analogous to Dromaeosaurids and Ornithomimids in terms of body plan and overall size. The smaller basal tyrannosaurids likely started off with more fluff and lost it as the species gradually grew in size and bulk. It's interesting the speculate what sort of adaptations may have evolved to deal with extreme climates, I would guess that a hot and dry climate with little tree covering would favour smaller, gracile predators and thus perhaps dwarfism. Then again, with less foliage there might not be enough large herbivores to sustain larger predators.

Two questions: 1. How much paint are you supposed to put out for mixing? 2. How can you realistically paint the whole water surface with such little mixed paint?
@JamesGurney
@JamesGurney 5 лет назад
I use synthetic flats, which can distribute the paint thinly, so I didn't need to mix up too much for the water.
