home sweet home.. It is best in the hot hot desert summer.... you go from >100F to snow capped peaks in a fifteen minute ride. So beautiful. I can still smell the pinion trees
I first went here in the early 70's....LONG before the update and revision. I have been here several times since and every time has been an enjoyable and titilating experience. Took several girlfriends here and both of my wives.
Went on this a few times. I have a real bad time with heights. It is difficult for me to look out the second story window sometimes. The first time I went on this tram, the only really difficult part was when the car passed each tower. It kind of hops a bit and swings just a bit. By the second time I went up, my phobia had worsened. Lucky for me there was a family of at least three giants. Each of them must have been in the upper six foot range. I stood in the middle of them until we reached the top. This video was beautifully done even though the camera doesn't give a good representation of movement of the tram as I mentioned earlier. Either way, it is really beautiful at the top if you happen to keep your eyes closed on the way up and miss the view of the ride. Warning if you are driving to the tram. It is a long (not really that long) drive up at a steep incline. Be sure your car can make it depending on what time of year it is. It could be very hot. The drive down can be very hard on your brakes. I warped my rotors on one trip. Coasting is too dangerous. I reached speeds upwards of 80 miles per hour before braking. Just so you know. This tram had a terrible accident many years ago. Not to worry though. It was rebuilt and as I have heard, much safer. Although I have not been up there in the summer months. I would suggest going in the winter. The snow is a really nice touch to what will be an interesting and fun day.
On downgrades, save your brakes by downshifting the transmission which will act like brakes. Doesn't bother the transmission at all, actually helps it in some ways.
HeRacesTheSun I think that may be what cars of the old days could handle. I had a few automatics that quickly developed similar transmission problems from downshifting instead of using the brakes a few years ago and that was not as steep a decline as this original posting talks about. Either way, I had no choice but to downshift because the down grade was so long that I would have burnt out the brakes anyway. Not using either put my speeds at about 80 to 90 plus miles per hour on a narrow, two lane winding road.
I have been there you go from wearing a t shirt and shorts on the bottom floor of palm spring to wearing a winter coat and long pants 10 min up in the mountain
I went on this thing for the first time in March and it scared the crap out of me. I wish I had watched this video ahead of time to warn myself of what was to come. Especially as someone who is not a big fan of heights.
Very cool video and an amazing experience i had with friends and family we went late last year i uploaded a quick fun little video of this place if anyone's interested
