Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.
This short video of two cultural performances from Palu city in Central Sulawesi contains a short (30 seconds) excerpt from a Warrior dance (trad), followed by a more modern dance performance with some contemporary features mixed with the traditional. This second dance has been highly edited to keep the time of the video down. It features a number of female dancers with one leading dancer who also plays bronze bowls in a contemporary manner with a contemporary sound which mixes wonderfully with the traditional instruments which are the main source of accompaniment. The lead female dancer also sings with the gamelan for part of the performance. The final section contains four female dancers. It is worth watching to the end as it is a most unusual piece and certainly shows how modern Indonesian performances can adapt to this century and offer some wonderful experiences of the old and new combined in many different aspects.
This piece was much longer and I have spent a lot of time editing it fearing that the audience who watch these clips might not like a lengthy performance.
