He told me this story 8 years ago at the LFS in person. Lucky to be alive!

Ben urged James to beat on his chest. Hasn't his heart been through enough? Come on, man! Thanks for sharing your story, James. Firsthand accounts go a long way to help people to change their thinking and actions.

Thanks for the kind words Jason , I hope my story makes people aware of the seriousness of Palytoxin exposure .

What has happened to James with the squirt to the eye has happend to many of us. Just thinking that a cited information packet might be useful to take to the emergency when you go.

Thank you for sharing, James. I have also been poisoned by Palythoa, and I like to spread the warning. I wonder if there is varying toxicity due to environmental conditions. This would explain the sporadic poisonings better than people developing a sensitivity to a powerful neurotoxin. Here is an excerpt from my conversation with Cristata.reef: "@intrinsicreefdesign I had to give your question some thought, and while I can't find any literature to suggest so, I wouldn't be surprised if the level of PLTX within zoantharians can vary from colony to colony. To my knowledge PLTX is actually produced by endosymbiosis commensal Bacteria and not the zoanthid itself It would make sense that under varying environmental conditions the concentration of these bacteria and subsequently the concentration of PLTX they produce can change, regardless of the host species (although some zoanthid species may foster more favorable environments for these bacteria, hence their heightened relative toxicity). I figure that also has to do with the variance in symptom severity."

I’m starting to take this palythoa poisoning thing more seriously. I would never get them now, but they’re popular here and very few are aware of their danger. One of our radiographers came to A&E with palytoxin poisoning a few years back. As an A&E doctor I hope never to see it.

Great story and cautionary tale. And I very much wish our society made stronger distinctions between a professional and ameture / hobbyist. We [society] used to pay attention to that, heavily. Somehow in the age of social media, its importance has been downplayed. Yet, there is absolutely a clear distinction between the level of experience and knowledge of a profession marine aquarist, and true hobbyist like myself. I quite honestly wish they weren't both called "aquarist". My immediate assumption when I hear the word is to conclude you're a hobbyist. Only after I'm told someone is a professional, does my perception change. I'm not saying that's a good thing. but...

Being a pro aquarist shouldn’t mean someone is a badass. I’ve known TONS of shitty ones. Hobbiest or pro…the dividing line between good and bad is obsession and knowledge.

@@CaptiveAquaticEcosystemsCAE That's a very fair point. I would not wish to place them on a pedestal. But in the same vein, there is simply something to be said about the inherent experience level. As a clearly obsessed hobbyist with a separate but strong foundation in biology, I can still only claim a very limited amount of experience with only two marine tanks over my still short period of time as an "marine aquarist". That pales in comparison the what James and Ben see on just a weekly basis. Now, have I been able to talk circles around some LFS employees? Sure, just ask them what a given species of coral is, or start asking about the wild setting such species is found it. But, that's unfairly playing "gotchya". I can obsessivley learn about what's under my care, and do :) But I will never have the level of experience of a professional that has the same obsessive approach to all the species they interact with through their business or research.
