Pamela's Pro Workout is one of those modules that’s hugely popular. It just seems like Pamela’s workout is in everyone’s rig. They just released the Pro workout last November. Ever since I had first heard about Pam’s when it was just her New workout - I couldn’t understand why it was so popular. It’s a clocking module. So what?
But after hearing about Pam’s Pro workout when it was released and seeing the new updates - I added it to my wishlist and decided to take the plunge recently.
What really sold me on this module was not the clocking - although that’s pretty cool in it of itself. It was the vast array of other utilities this thing offers.

I was considering selling my DFAM, but not anymore! I just stumbled onto your channel and it's quickly become my favorite. Many modular synth channels assume a lot of knowledge. And they move too quick. I think you fill a great niche of speaking plainly to those of us who are still wrapping our heads around this. Also, I like that you speak directly to the camera. It's more engaging and I think there are plenty of madly gesticulating hands out there already. I will certainly use your affiliate links next time I want to dig a deeper hole for myself. Keep it up!!

Hey, I did my first live performance inspired by this video. Instead of using Pamela's, I used a Key step pro. The drum track for triggers, and a voice track to control Ocilater 1. I also used a Roland TR-8. It was an open mic at my local synth shop. Using the techniques you show in your videos for the DFAM, it was a success. I got a lot of positive responses. Thank you for posting these.

There is a module called PICO MSCALE that was designed to convert voltages to the -5 to +5 scale and from -5/+5 to 0 to 10. It is specifically designed for the Mother 32, but you can use it for the DFAM. It’s small and relatively inexpensive. Those VCOs are based on 1960s topologies, so Moog stuck with the bipolar voltage. The Korg SQ-64 allows you to scale the voltage. It’s a frustrating piece of gear, but it has lots of advantages that make it useful.

The best thang about using the MAFD with the DFAM is that it resets without having to manually step through. I use the beatstep pro to quantize pitch in the DFAM. I also have Pam's workout, i mostly use it for clocked modulation. It is an awesome device. I use the clock out of the crave to lock up Pam with my DAW. The midi to clock in the crave is super stable.
@braintree56
@braintree56 Год назад
Yeah, the MAFD is so tempting for that reason! I didn't know the Beatstep could quantize pitch. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the tip!
@mimikova390

@@braintree56 The beatstep does not quantize an incoming signal. I use one of the tracks of the Beatstep to output v/oct pitch. The route to the osc in what is cool the beatstep and can do 64 steps. so I can do more complex patterns. I like to clock the DFAM with the midi i sent to the MAFD. I usually default to it running in sequence. BUT sometimes I bounce them all around. you can also do things like substeps for ratchets. can also give a slice-up effect when you juggle the steps of an established pattern. I enjoy your videos. Before I had the MAFD I used the overstep to clock the DFAM. only annoying thing is that it did not reset to the begging of the sequence when i start and stopped. As for a pitch quantizer, you have Pam she can handle that. Love your videos, It is fun to see how different people approach a synth, thanks.

@@braintree56 The immediate one, for me, is the display. It’s bigger and much clearer… I’m an old fart so my eyes aren’t what they were ;) Also there are more waveforms and the quantiser is a considerable upgrade, you don’t have the mini keys to choose your scale for example and being able to stay on the same function and switch between outputs is huge, particularly when setting Euclidean rhythms. There’s more that I can’t recall but I remember thinking it would be worth upgrading at some point when they released the Pro version

@@braintree56 Did you ever find the differences? FINALLY got my PPW about 12 hours ago. Here is a list of the upgrades from Pamela's New Workout to Pamela's PRO Workout: The PRO workout contains the following improvements over ’Pamela’s NEW Workout’ • Large, color, and higher res display with much improved clearer theme-able UI. • Faster CPU with dual-core processing. • Outputs all now 12-bit resolution (over 10 prior Bit). • Higher resolution internal clock. • Run and Clock inputs can now be reassigned to 2 extra CV inputs. • New faster multipliers / bigger divisions. • Supports Axon-1 and AXON-2 expander for 4 extra CV inputs. • Instant Saving and loading of output settings and banks. • Clock does not need to be stopped to save current parameters across power cycles. • Improved Euclidean patterns - pattern display, ’padding’ option. • Improved quantizer with definable user scales. • New waveforms - Ratchets, Slewed random, Hump, trapezoid, Log envelope. • Loop snooze and wake options. • Cross-output operations combine output values in various ways (extending logic ops). • Flex micro timing mode for swing, humanize, bouncing ball type ’ off-grid’ timings. • Invert option. • Scope display for monitoring signals. • Easier firmware updates via USB-c disk. • Stored banks backup and restore via USB-c disk. • Adjustable program knob hold time. • VCV Support.

Such a great, informative video. Thank you so much (bought a Pam's Pro to use with my DFAM because of this :) Can you explain the theory/reason behind the "start the DFAM sequence at step 8" thing? Is there a delay from Pam's or something? Or in general, are you supposed to set the DFAM to step 8 when triggered (adv/clock) from an outside source? Thanks :)
@braintree56
@braintree56 11 месяцев назад
You have to start the DFAM from step 8 all the time. No matter what it's being clocked from or if it's being clocked internally. It doesn't have a reset, so when you start it, it immediately plays the next step. We want it to immediately play step 1... Kind of a quirk of the DfAM.

@braintree56

For me, it is a problem with the signal coming out of the mother. I don't have the same problem when patching from Pam's. So I think that it is an issue from the mother - for me. Are you getting the same latency from Pam's?

If you quantize then change the level, i suppose the cv is not quantized anymore...
@chitlun
@chitlun Год назад
Changing the level reduces the output voltage, thus reducing the range. If you have a full 5v going out, it’s 5 octaves so reducing the level brings that down to a more musical range.
@monkeyplusplus
@monkeyplusplus Год назад
@@chitlun I think what they were talking about is if you reduce the range post-quantizer you'll get values that don't correspond to the scale you were trying to quantize to, vs reducing the range pre-quantizer
@mimikova390
@mimikova390 Год назад
you would want to attenuate the signal before the quantizer if you want the signal to conform to the parameters of the quant.

It annoys me slightly, especially when using the quantization, that Pam’s level is set in just 100 steps (whole number percentage), that’s less than 7 bits (of the 12 bit D/A). It was not accurate enough when I tried to quantize within a specific range. I had an issue when increasing by one added one more note than I wanted, and decreasing by one remove one more note than I wanted. There should be an option to set it more accurately. I have Pam’s New Workout, but the Pro seems to have the same limitation.
@braintree56
@braintree56 11 месяцев назад
That makes a lot of sense. It does appear that they didn't upgrade that moving from New to Pro. A small complaint - but you would think it would also be an easy upgrade... Thanks for pointing it out.

I’m trying to build a system for experimental noise music. Is it better to have 1 pro pam and a maths or 2 pro Pam’s? Dfam M32 2 fix aid 2 pro pam Noise plethora Loop 2hp Rosie MFX 4 hp 4 channel mixer For VOCALS: Ghost Instrument Interface Befaco In a make noise 208 with bus case …with 6 hp left OR : Make Noise black and gold shared system plus ?
@braintree56
@braintree56 11 месяцев назад
For experimental noise I'm not sure you need Pam's at all. I find Pam's to be really great at clocking and clock sync'd modulation. Keeping things grounded and controlled. But I guess it depends what your experiments are! :) I would definitely say that Maths would be a great fit no matter what type of music you're making. I would recommend it. Make Noise in general is well suited to the experimental stuff. Their system might fit your needs more than the DFAM/Mother combo. That's my opinion, but... There's no right answer in modular. Everyone's system is different and ever evolving.

I own the PNW, and it's terrifically capable. There are quite a few things that make the Pro look better, but PNW will do quantized, looped sequences, Euclidean rhythms, and boolean logic. The logic on the pro is analog style, meaning you get the max/min of two waves whereas the New does bitwise logic, so that the results you get comparing gates makes sense but LFOs come out really jagged and unpredictable.
