On January 17, Assistant Secretary -- Indian Affairs Kevin K. Washburn announced the Pamunkey Indian Tribe had become one step closer to becoming the first tribe from Virginia to be federally recognized.
RELATED: indiancountrytodaymedianetwork...
On a cold winter day, we traveled to the Pamunkey Reservation to get a feel for what the tribe is experiencing in the aftermath of a positive preliminary finding.
Pamunkey Chief Kevin Brown expressed feelings among his tribal members are mixed, but that the decision made by Washburn weeks ago is a huge deal.
Asst. Chief Bob Gray and tribal member Joyce Krigsvold also weighed in on the matter that is inciting serious change and regard for Virginia Indian tribes still fighting for federal recognition.

As a descendent of Chief Opechancanough Mangopeesomon Powhatan, who I've recently learned is my 10th great-grandfather, I congratulate you on successfully gaining the recognition you rightly deserve.

Any of y'all ever read "proposed finding" from BIA documents? I suggest that every tribe applying for federal recognition go read what it says for ones that were denied. That way you know what your response will probably be.

I have just verified that I have Pamunkey ancestors after years of rumors within the family. My siblings and cousins are deeply honored and hope that we can connect and support our family in anyway that is appropriate.

I think it's important. The Pamunky are a historical tribe, influential in the Powhatan nation, and one of the top recognized native Americans Pocahontas was Pamunky, as was her father Chief Wahunsenocok who presided over the Powhatan nation of East continent tribes. A powerful movement created from the immigrating of Europeans. Like it or not...being recognized is necessary to sovereignty. It's a different time now than 400 years ago and this hard work is a step forward for the here and now and tomorrow.

@ Mike Welch stop the lies. Chief Powhatan lived on Church Hill Richmond VA. Not Pamunkey territory! Thank Walter Plecker for giving you False History. The true Pamunkey were labeled Black in 1929. Now called African Americans

Does anyone know Mr. William Deyo? My understanding is that he is the Pamunkey Tribes official historian. I am curious about a theory he has that a Joseph P. West is in fact the half brother of John West who is known to be the son of Queen Cockacoeske. If his theory is right then he just may have found the broken link in my family with the death of a William Riley West Jr who died in 1875 in Surry North Carolina. His lineage breaks at least in my family tree but there is another possibility that the William West Jr who died in 1875 at an unknown location may in fact be one in the same. If that is so then his father William West 1763-1841 may link all the way back to Joseph P. West born 1662-1731, son of Queen Cockacoeske. I have been going through many documents trying to hunt this all down but I lost the trail in a 1771 census that spoke of William West in Surry County NC. Magically my great great great great grandfather William Riley West Jr appears from thin air and marries an Elizabeth Austill on 11 February 1832. They have numerous children (9 total) with one being named John H West, another named Mahala West and another named Major West. A few of the names just stand out in his children.

Black Powder Patriots just do a little investigation into the $5 Indians and then in the sense of truth and justice you will see that these casinos are just another scheme in American Capitalism that excludes 95% of the people.

@@elegua9160 Yes because anyone who is part white is automatically not really Indian right? You're talking about the verifiable myth of the Dawes roll, and people allegedly paying $5 to be put on the rolls, in fact there's no evidence of that. In this tribe is for Virginia, not Oklahoma oh, and they've always lived on the reservation, in the Commonwealth of Virginia. I'm kind of sick of the racism in Indian country.

@ Keith McCaslyn the real Native Americans were reclassified as Black by Joseph Plecker In Richmond 1929. Virginia Indians were WELL Known to be Red skinned/ Copper Colored People. These in the video are the infamous $5 Indians. A government program to give white Americans a chance to receive Federal assistance. Ask me how I know!
@tainahernandez4825

Most native Americans are a matrilineal society. Meaning the children are part of the nation/tribe that their mother belongs too. My guess is his mother is part of the pumunkey. His father may be of European descent ( I'm just guessing). So they don't go by what you look like or what tribe your Dad is from.
