It's a bit ironic. Pan Am spearheaded the 747 development and is the first airline to have it en masse. The 747 made Pan Am iconic and the leader of the commercial aviation industry with it's intercontinental flight routes made possible by the 747. Yet ultimately, it was the 747 that was one of the main reasons for the airlines' downfall, which can be attributed to it's cost of operations and the fact that Pan Am had so many of them.
