Pan Am’s World, produced by Peckham Productions USA in the 1970s, is a promotional film for Pan American Airlines. The film opens with a shot of a Pan Am DC-10 jet/clipper (00:52), and the narrator tells viewers that Pan Am flies to more than 120 different places on 6 continents. Intercontinental hotels are at many of the destinations, providing luxuriously comfortable lodging. Pan Am also operates the world’s largest private communications system (01:50), connecting all the different components of Pan Am’s world. The film then showcases a handful of destinations that are part of Pan Am’s world. The first is Bali (02:43), and the film montage includes scenes of Bali’s beautiful countryside, bustling streets, traditional dances and music, sculptors and weavers, and its spectacular sunsets. The next featured location is Paris (04:03), where visitors can enjoy the Eiffel Tower, busy streets, the Arc de Triomphe, Paris’ Hotel Intercontinental, fashion districts, and culinary arts. The film then shows an airport or a manufacturing plant (05:44), followed by scenes of mechanics inspecting planes and parts, and viewers are treated to scenes inside a training cockpit (06:24). The film then moves to its next highlight, Beirut. The Beirut montage (06:49) includes footage of belly dancing, traditional Arab music, Lebanon Mountains, Roman ruins, fishing, and shopping at bazaars, as well as a few scenes of Beirut’s airport. Viewers are then taken to Sydney (08:29), with impressive shots of Sydney Harbor, what appears to be Sydney Harbor Bridge, Sydney’s lively streets, children observing kangaroos, the Pearl Hotel, surfing, and a sunset. Rio de Janeiro (09:39) is the next stop on the tour of Pan Am’s world. Beautiful beaches and water provide endless activities, but pools sitting on the city’s hills with stunning city views (10:00) are not to be missed; dancing, horse riding, architecture, and excursions up the Amazon are just some of the other attractions found in this Brazilian city. From Rio, viewers are taken to Tokyo (11:00), where gardens and pagodas are contrasted with neon signs adorning sky scrappers, a microcosm of the blending of the traditional and the modern in Japan’s massive capital city. In Miami (12:05), flight attendants put on makeup and then practice emergency protocols with evacuating planes. Farther out in the Caribbean, Port-au-Prince greets visitors with musical performances on steel drums, waterfalls, water sports, rum cocktails and dancing on the beach. London’s high-volume airport (14:35) is the gateway to the splendid city. Footage of London (15:17) includes Big Ben, the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, double-decker Routemaster buses, streets, and fountains. The film then moves to Nairobi (15:50), where attractions include visiting fishermen who continue their ancient profession, watching traditional dances on the beach, and observing the incredible wildlife. In the southeast Pacific is Tahiti (17:05), a paradise where visitors can boat, lounge on beaches, go bird watching, sip drinks at the pool, and take in incredible sunsets. The second-to-last city is Rome (18:00), with its breathtaking collection of statues and fountains, not to mention other must-see sights such as the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and the Vatican. The last city featured in Pan Am’s World is Hong Kong (19:20), with its boat-filled harbor, impressive city skyline, and chaotic streets.

They were the leader. They got outrun by the pack. Still the leader. The first. Still remembered more than 30 years after the end.

Looks like circa 1972 or so. Mentions the intercontinental hotel chained PA owned before they sold it.

This is the closest soundtrack I could find for Pan Am vinyls for which was shown in a interview on Nardwar ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-02-9YDsAXL8.htmlsi=X8PbgPGQzCpJX8fw&t=275 Any other links to this vinyl by Pan Am?

The production value to put together a video like this, when they did it, is truly astounding. Pan Am was a trailblazer and a pioneer in many ways.

And now we are back in the shrunken pre travel era. Possibly for another year. Or two. Or ?

Pan Am's world includes destinations that don't really require Pan Am service. No surprise they weren't exactly the most profitable airline in the world - and that was in the regulated era. Explains why they're one of the victims of deregulation, really.

The National merger and Lockerbie were what really did them in.
