Pan Am Tv Series Pilot End Scene

When the Pan Am TV Series pilot first aired, the ending scene of the four stewardesses walking through the airport included the classic song "Mack the Knife" by Bobby Darin. Anyone who has downloaded this episode will notice the song for this scene has since been changed. I thought the original version was perfect as is, so I edited my own version of it with "Mack the Knife" back in.

I still miss this show. My son was shocked at the glamour of the world I was born into. So was I actually. Being born in 1963 made this stuff just everyday life to me. I remember the scene with the rotary phone and typewriter. I didn't notice it until my son pointed them out. "Oh yeah...that's exotic to you isn't it?" Dayum! Time did certainly fly.

This closing scene was the bomb! The coordinated walking, the way they held their hands out, the music, etc. Perfection.

The girls looked more like a military regiment, the way they strode through the airport in unison.

@@EJofLA True. Although I might add the idea of them actually in the military would be funny. Maggie would get tossed out for insubordination in sixty seconds.

Pan Am captures the beauty and the ugly of the airline industry perfectly, but mostly, everything are wonderful. This scene is very very real. I used to be that little girl, staring at the elegant air stewardess and stare in awe when they smiled back at me. But now, I am finally an air stewardess and little children would smile with glee when I smile or say hello to them. They'd smile with the look I used to have, pure adoration

Haha, very funny you should have mentioned the little girl. I imagined she became a flight attendant herself by 1978.

Yep this was how we were all admired and stared at, we all felt like movie stars. Nothing better than when we walked through the terminal at JFK NY leaving US Customs, all eyes were on us. This also garnered us with respect not only admiration. Many of us still get the looks as it was all in the way we carrie ourselves, somethings just become habit and stays with you.

Cool. Was looking up some historical stuff, and came across this TV show. I had never heard of it. Very nice.

"Mac the knife" is about a serial killer, which may explain why it was dropped, although the lines used don't mention that.

Thanks for this, as I purchased the show on iTunes (like I do many shows even today) and didn't watch it on air, I heard about this but never saw it. I hate when they have different music on DVD/etc. And yeah, I sooo miss this show... the final episode, the way they end it with them just finding out... um... major event in history (won't spoil it)...

@ladywentworth thanks for your comment! This show caught my attention from the publicity blitz (tv promos, print ads) before the pilot even aired. I think the show has lots of class and style and I hope ABC does the right thing and renew it. I'm also glad that you find the show accurate as far as the airline industry goes. I'll be tuning in on 1/8/12 and for all subsequent airings of Pan Am :)

The series had so much potential too. It's too bad HBO didn't pick it up for 2 more seasons.

I see this elegant scene from days gone by and I think of that Southwest pilot who was bitching about "gays, grannies and grandes."

I too tried to find it but no luck. I'm beginning to think that its a generic 60's sounding song from nowhere by no one. I tried Googling the lyrics, looking on forums and no one has anything. However, if you know why they replaced it I would love to know. Copyright issues probably. Too bad. Mack the Knife went along perfectly with their walk,
