"Villains believe themselves to be the hero of their own story". So true. I'm working on a project right now called "When Were You The Villain in Someone Else's Story?" that asks the viewer that exact question. Great video, thanks for sharing all of your insights. I just stumbled on to your channel, and I can't believe how great these are.

Another fascinating dissection of an interesting movie. The virtue of making one's work 'powerfully efficient' would apply to any narrative form in any period, I think. Or 'brevity is the soul of wit', as Shakespeare wrote about 400 years ago. (Without always sticking to it, perhaps...)

I feel like Ofelia, having the secret world of emotional shields, telegraphing and dangling clauses opened up for me! Great stuff. She certainly faces a villain who is powerful in Captain Vidal. But do you risk disengagement or fatigue in the viewer when presenting a villain who seems unremittingly cruel or bereft of redeeming features?

That's a great question, and I do think that you should humanize every character. If we understand why they do what they do (which they do show us about Captain Vidal), it isn't as fatiguing, as you mentioned.

It's funny because you hook a reader on the first 10 pages, not a viewer, since they have already purchased the ticket. We're talking about films here😐I don't know many people who will leave a theater after 10 minutes no matter how terrible the film is. so how much of screenwriting is based around pleasing someone to produce the film rather than pleasing the audience actively watching it? And how much has film as an art form been deformed to fit these readers?

Yes, it's a good point you make. But haven't you ever sat through a movie and started checking your phone after ten minutes because it was so painful? A movie doesn't hook its viewers, there's no word of mouth of "Oh man, you have to see this movie".
