One of your best videos to date. I like the look of both Pana and San Pedro but one thing I noticed that would appeal to me is Pana seems more level. Some of those villages are extraordinarily scenic climbing the hills but from a daily perspective that would be tough on old knees. But having that lake crossing and many villages to explore does make for a unique lifestyle. Thanks for all you do to show amazing places!

If hills are tough, but you want to be close to the scenic wonder that is Atitlan, then the nearby town of Antigua might be a good fit. Though hills surround it, the center of Antigua itself is quite flat. And the colonial architecture is beautiful and well kept. Lots of foreigners around as well, since it's among the most popular places for foreigners to learn Spanish in Latin America. (When I was there in ~2012, the expat population skewed pretty heavily towards the 18-30yo age group, so not sure how agreeable it would be for a retiree. Waiting for Dan to give us HIS take! )

From a bit of research it does seem that Antigua is a good deal more expensive. It does have a great climate too, and is close to Guatemala City and the airport. It has experienced severe earthquakes in the past, which is why it's no longer the capital, which was moved to what is now Guatemala City.

After San Cristobal de las Casas we’ll be heading to Guatemala. That hostel looks perfect for a landing spot. I hope we can get out of Oaxaca. I’ve heard that the protests may have closed some highways. The airport is closed for sure.

@@VagabondAwake We're in San Cristobal de las Casas. The airport opened on Thursday and we left in our car on Saturday. Apparently the airport was closed for 4 days by a protest concerning teachers and school funding.

My daughter is in North Carolina doing Special Forces training and she wanted me to watch her dogs. :-) I will go to a city in the RJ mountains this weekend to make up for my trip to the USA. Oh my does that look good. Starting May 1 2021 we are once again going to be stuck here in Chiang Mai and 4 other areas of Thailand due to almost everything restriction. We are not supposed to say lock down because of something too strange for us to understand (maybe a loss of face). Restaurants will be closed to dine in. Masks must be worn or a fine of 20,000 baht. Everything is restricted. Some of the restrictions are too weird to understand. No walking in the parks or woods on the trails. Be happy you escaped this part of the world.

He's referring to the town of Panajachel as a retirement village because there are so many expat retirees there. It's a Guatemalan town, not a private community. And you can buy or rent there.

Retirement village a great idea when you start losing mobility and old age sets in. If I was old and frail I would likely not live in a less developed country. Lucky I am on track to not encounter these issues anytime soon (fingers crossed).

It’s certainly important to think about that. Many people are in denial about aging. There are people figuring this out in Panajachel. Somewhere there’s a video of an elderly man explaining that he can afford live-in help there. He lives in a small accessible single story building with a beautiful garden. There’s a small private hospital in town with English-speaking doctors, outpatient services and general surgery. If you needed extensive medical care that would require going to the capital - or potentially, an exit plan.

Yes. We just follow whatever the country rules are. Plus, I am 60 years old and hope to live another 25 years so I just do what the doctors say. I don't really listen to politicians. Most of them haven't been to medical school. :-)
