For the longest time I have wanted to test out and compare the Panasonic Leica 12mm f1.4 against the Panasonic Lumix 12-35mm f2.8, the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f2.8 and Panasonic Leica 8-18mm f2.8-4.0 at 12mm. In this video I do that!
I test the different lenses at 12mm and see how they compare and if there it is a good idea to get the dedicated 12mm lens over the zooms.

12mm is my favorite focal length. In good light situations, I usually use the 12-60 to have more options but in buildings, low light or if I want the DOF the 12mm comes into action. It's of course a good thing, that the filter thread is 62mm on both lenses. If it need to be realy wide, I have the laowa 7.5mm and in cases where I might need something longer, I add the 35-100mm/2.8 or the 100-300mm. All together still not that much of equipment.

Arber Baqaj for me I was looking to the 12-35 f/2.8 for a starting lens (since I don’t have lens for my bmpcc4k I received it yesterday by the way ) but for me the deal breaker is the distortion that all the lenses you show on this video at 12 it s very noticeable. While not 12mm, the Leica 15mm, f1.7 is a nice alternative and is relatively light. I've found it quite useful, and I think it is a bit lower priced than the 12mm, f1.4.

Based on your pics/video, the 8-18 was crisper in each photo with exception of the Lock, up close! The 12 rendered a much better bokeh at the fountain, no doubt But as far as shooting landscape stills, I think it would a toss-up between the 8-18 and the 12...based on looking at your test subject through youtube!

Thanks Arber! I have been thinking now for a while that this might be the best performing wide angle lens for low light use. It was so great to see that you gave us a performance review and some samples and comparisons. I am filming cars at a drag strip race track (and while they are parked and being worked on) and I purchased the Laowa 7.5mm F2, but 12 mm seems to be just wide enough in the tight spaces for what I am doing too. I have the 12-60 f 3.5 kit lens which in all honesty is fine for day use in the sun, but for night time with a Gh5 it is not bright enough. The Laowa 7.5 at f/2 is barely enough to work with at night with a gh5 so I have had my eyes on this f1.4 12mm Panasonic leica lens. Thanks again, for allllll your micro 4/3ds videos! Have a good one Arber ! If anyone is bored enough to see my 1st day at the track shot on a gx85 with kit lens, search for "Team Toaster at Vegas" here on youtube. Cheers everyone!

@@colinthecameraguy My biggest problem with the Leica 15mm 1.7 was the distortion, especially on faces fairly close to the lens. Of course, this is a problem with any Micro 4/3 lens, as they were designed to be automatically corrected. Using EF lenses with a Speedbooster makes distortion WAY less, as it's only using the center of the lens, and those lenses were not built to be "corrected", they have to look good right out of the camera. However, they are heavy and expensive...

I am proud to make it within the 100 first comments here 🛎. With my recently introduced channel, I "owe" this comment to the author of now almost 3-year old content. But this is my second-ever comment on any video, so let it go 800 km over to Malmö. -I have seen almost all available reviews and comparisons of most these lenses in recent years. While this presentation is an obvious case for the 12mm f1.4 prime, the comparison itself has made me purchase PL8-18 in the past. Is there no better video comparison on the subject on this platform? No, probably there is. But one lens quality aspect which is clearly obvious in these examples - and is perhaps least tackled generally by the most reviewers - is the *color rendition* and the *character* of a lens. I find 8-18 superior in this respect. Also it seems to have the highest so-called micro-contrast. Just look at the fence of that white bridge. What strikes me here too is that all examples done by 12-35 look a bit more exposed (with presumably the same in-camera exposure settings for all the lenses tested). The 12-35 has a warmer, less contrasty character, perhaps more "cinematic" for some, while the PL12-60 is cooler and more clinical like the 8-18 and the 12 f1.4 featured here. Why comment on a 3-year-old video? Well, unlike camera bodies, the lenses are here to stay for much longer. Secondly, let's face it, the current economic crisis will not end tomorrow. Last but not least, most of these lenses are good enough anyway, the weakest link of today's content being not the technical quality but the meaningful idea and subject elaboration. This video is a very pleasant stuff to follow, spontaneous, varied and natural, while informative. There isn't one single word too many, which is a common downside of many creators on this platform. I have to see some more recent ones of this author to see how he progresses. ⛵

Nicely presented test of these lenses. Thank you. Would be interesting to see how the cheap 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 would done in this environmet. There is one misconception in your statements. More Bokeh is not automatically better. It’s about the quality of the Bokeh and that is off course very subjective. Also, in landscape shots I usually don’t want any Bokeh.

I shoot mostly outdoors so I like wide! I'm with you Arger, the 12mm f1.4 is a great lens... but is it worth the price point is the main question. I guess if I had all the lenses that you have herein or the not yet released 10-25 f1.7, and money wasn't an issue, the answer would be YES! However, for the extra stop or 2 of light, I don't see it. I own a Rokinon 7.5 cine T2.2, small & light, great colour, which is very good at its price point, and the 14-140 f3.5 and a 40 -150 f2.8. I am looking for a third option!! Most of all for a wide angle I think a 10 to 12mm prime would be a better choice! Possibly the Voigtlander Nokton 10.5mm f/0.95 Lens. Built like a tank, easy focusing, minimal distortion, sharp, creamy bokeh, while never have to worry about low light or night shoots again.

@ 12 mm, the distortion on 12-35, 12-60, even 12 mm 1.4 is striking. You can't make these lenses general purpose lenses @ this focal. They should only be considered for some shots where you only care about image center. The 8-18 shows much better quality (except background bokhe which is average) but you loose the 1.4 effect. So having both fixed & -8-18 zoom could help. Not a single one gives enough. The 12-60 looks like junk here @ 2.8. Surprising.
@HamiltonSRink

Not every photographer requires subject isolation. M4/3 big advantage is small size. When you ask Boca of the system, you need the big, heavy (and expensive) primes. So now your using a bigger, more expensive rig. M4/3 essentially punches above its weight class. The GX9 with the 12-32 collapsing pancake lens, IMHO, plays to M4/3rds strengths. Quite small and affordable.

A big problem with the 12-60 in the BMPCC 4K is the distortion. The GH5 has software correction of this distortion, but the Blackmagic hasn´t, and it is very evident in the near subjects, as buildings. The 8-18 has less distortion, I think.

Regards från Strängnäs! Hi Arber! I am in a real quandary about deciding between the GH5 and the GH5S model. I have rented the GH5 but have been unable to try the S model. I really like the Leica 8-18 lens and while it has only happened once or twice, I have seen that jello effect in the corners that you have previously mentioned. Knowing that the GH5S has no stabilisation, I was thinking that I could just get away with holding the camera still and using the 4K Live Crop to get pan shots or zooms with the 8 to 18. I have also used the Leica 12-60, f 2.8 lens as a possible "all purpose" lens. I feel as though the 8-18mm is very good for filming in small rooms. Have you used the GH5S with a lens such as the 12-60 or even the 12-35 since both of them have OIS? Would they be enough for handheld filming when I am standing still filming for travel videos and liknande? What do you think? What has been your experience with using the GH5S model with a stabilised lens? Is it enough? I'm much farther North than you are in Malmö, but we both know how DARK it gets here in the winter. I'd love to see a video of you doing hand held filming with the S model and only an OIS Leica lens, no gimbal, and see what you come up with. So, the final question would be: GH5, GH5S or wait for the GH6, but who knows when that will get here and what it will cost?!
@ArberBaqaj
@ArberBaqaj 4 года назад
Tjena!

At the moment I'm using Samyang / Rokinon primes (8mm 3.5, 10mm 2.0 , 16mm 2.0 and 35mm 1.4 85mm 1.4) and a Voigtlander 25mm 0.95. Finding a great lens for interviews using the BMPCC and now BMPCC4K has been a quest for me. I think the Voigtlander and the 16mm Rokinon are clear winners, but I'm tempted to go Leica zooms for several reasons (stabilisation, linked with owning a G9 as well for handheld) and the covering everything in 2 or 3 lenses (8-18, 12-35, 35-100). Imagine having the BMPCC4k and G9 and only 3 lenses between the 2... just sounds like a much more sensible option. But, then, cinematic prime lenses do give more care in front of the client... decision decisions!

@@mustbescud I honestly cannot explain the full physics, but in general, the issue is that having both a wide aperture at the wide end and at the end of the zoom range of a lens is engineeringly challenging. It is more expensive. Therefore, to save money, engineers let the aperture shrink to a smaller opening as the lens is zoomed in. Otherwise the overall size and cost would be bigger.

12-60's f2.8 looks more bokehlicious than 12-35's

I'm so tempted to get 12mm/F1.4. At low light faster aperture would be so much greater than the 8-18 I have. Sure, it has OIS but it helps only if subjects are not moving. 12mm/F1.4 would be more compact than my Sigma 18-35 F1.8 that I find a bit bulky sometimes. Sigma is too bulky for my small gimbal for taking video too. (And with my metabones 12mm would be a bit wider too I think)

@@romainprovost7164 I have an old Feiyu gimbal. Any low mass device should do fine with GH5.
