@@kbasemuzik no worries man and yeah lenses do that! in the video you can actually see the 12-60 having a brighter exposure to the 14-42 even with the same settings and lighting conditions, and you can especially see this when you compare kit lenses with nice prime lenses... anyway thanks for watching!

Just got the 12-60 for a great price. I wanted it with my GX8 because it is wider and longer than the 14-42 and it's weather sealed. I do documentaries outdoors and weather sealing was more important than a longer focal length on the 14-140. I'll now keep the 14-42 with my GM1 as camera B for interviews. Thanks for making this video, it confirms I made a good choice!

Good video and information. For travel, the small size of the Lumix 14-42mm is super appealing. Even when fully retracted, the 12-60mm is too long to walk around all day long hanging on my neck. The comparable pancake lenses with electronic zooms are too slow on start-up for me. I recently purchased a used Lumix 14-42mm and compared it to two pro zooms, the Olympus Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8 pro and Leica 8-18mm F2.8-4.0. Both of those lenses are big. The contrast and saturation was better on the bigger lenses. Adjusting the camera's contrast and saturation settings narrowed the differences. So nice results are possible with the Lumix 14-42mm. As far as sharpness, the Lumix 14-42m was almost as sharp at 14-18mm F-3.5-8.0 at portrait distances. At longer distances both the pro lenses seemed much sharper. It's hard to downgrade from those pro lenses, but there are situations where a big lens is not possible or at least very awkward. So a smaller lens is the only option. 14mm is a good street-photo focal length and where the Lumix 14-42mm performs best. I like the added flexibility of zooming to 18mm for street portraits.

Nice review. I like that you review affordable choices, not just pricey 'pro' models. I own the 14-42 and my new favorite kit lens, the tiny Lumix 12-32. I also shoot with the Lumix 14-140mm and my overall fav, the 20mm pancake. In my view, it is the fast small primes that differentiate Micro Four Thirds from a point and shoot. For example, I get better results from my Canon sx720 than I do from my GX-85 with the 14-140mm. Just my take. Anyway, thanks for another great video.

Good review but, as with all m43 kit lenses, copy variation can be the most significant variable. My P12-60 was the worst lens I’ve ever owned (circa 30 in total). It was soft with poor contrast. On the other hand, my 14-42 II is a dream to use and surprisingly competent.

The only reason i dont have it is because I don't really shoot that long and i prefer to have a weather sealed do it all zoom!

If you have time, please send Panasonic an email asking them to upgrade the firmware on the G85. They upgraded it on the G9 and GH5 to improve autofocus, but left the G85 in the dust! We need autofocus!
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 4 года назад
Sorry bud don’t think my email will do anything- cameras are made in different brackets, more ‘pro’ models, and more consumer models. When I say ‘pro’ I don’t mean consumer models won’t make you money or you can’t you use on professional shoots- this is just how the market is divided. And the G85 is classified as more of a consumer camera, while the G9 and Gh5 pro cameras. Basically the pro cameras will always get more support such as firmware updates while consumer ones hardly change after their initial specs (firmware updates are more to fix bugs than to improve performance). It sucks I know but the m43 system has never really had good af in video anyway!

Shooting in RAW, doesn't what can then be done in post, either in-camera, or using software on a computer, mean all the contrast, sharpness and saturation issues that surround a certain bit of glass, are quite meaningless?
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 4 года назад
Hey man excellent question and that’s partly true but the long answer is a bit more complicated. Firstly if you’re shooting RAW, it’s most likely going to be only for photos unless you have a serious rig like a cinema camera. So in many cases, this will affect video shooters more because you usually have more latitude in photos. For raw photos- the contrast, saturation can be meaningless if you’re going to edit the picture. However, with lenses, especially vintage lenses, people just like ‘the look’ they give- and it’s hard and maybe impossible to replicate in post. Same with expensive Leica lenses- people like them partly because they have a look ie maybe the bokeh is super smooth etc etc these are things you can’t edit in later. As for sharpness- there’s a big difference in lens sharpness, and digital sharpening so you can’t really add this in post. Try this- go to Instagram and try and upload a picture but before you do, edit the picture and go to sharpening. Turn it all the way up- it’s ugly isn’t it? That’s what digital sharpening is like, it basically traces the black lines and makes them thicker. You will see this on lower end video cameras, especially in go pro type of cameras and even on drones. Real sharpness from a lens, especially from something like cinema lenses- they have a different effect- the image is ACTUALLY sharp and that’s partly why they cost closer to 50k for a set of 6 lenses (yeah no joke lol look up Cooke lenses on b and h) rather than the typical sub 1k price per lens. I’m sure there are plenty of videos where you can find that talk about digital sharpening vs lens sharpness for more on that thank goodness for RU-vid! One last thing is that if your lenses are giving different colors, it’s harder to work with them on the same project ie imagine being a wedding photographer or god forbid a videographer and getting slightly different colors from different lenses throughout the day- if you’re that guy and you’re serious about color grading- have fun correcting it all later to match! This is also partly why cinema lenses are sold in a set. Same color- so when your color grader does it for one scene, he isn’t doing another color grade for an alternate shot on a different lens in the same scene- just copy and paste that grade coz it’s supposed to be exactly the same. So basically, some of it you can edit in later, some of it not. Can I make an Olympus lens look like a Panasonic lens with some editing? Sure! Will it take time? 100%. And is it always worth it? Definitely not lol. If you’re serious about color in photography or videography- it’s easier to streamline your workflow. But can you match lens characteristics in the end? Sometimes yes, sometimes no!

@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 4 года назад
Hey man if you want that versatility I could go with the 14-42. I think the most important part of starting out is getting a nice range of focal lengths in a lens- it’ll help you see what things you like to shoot and how you like to shoot them. Later down the line, you can refine your choices in lenses when you know what you really like shooting and what lenses are best for that- there’s nothing worse than buying a lens and never using it! Enjoy man :)

Hey man for sure! Of course it's really good to have a dedicated portrait lens but if you can't afford it yet use the 12-60! @@AjazUmarAnsari ahh in that case i a better option is the canon m50 but it is going to be more expensive (and in my opinion not as good in terms of video quality). However, it has great autofocus! The 14-42 will be decent for vlogging, but i would find a wider lens if possible, maybe the 12-32mm 3.5-5.6. The extra 2mm makes a difference but the 14-42 is good enough!

Is there manual focus in lumix 14 42?
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 2 года назад
yes there is, but it is focus by wire so it's not that great to use! when you twist the ring it doesn't necessarily move the focus point very accurately
