Having added (last year) the GH5s to my GH5 and G9 I have vowed Not to make any changes to my camera collection until 2023. In the meantime I even sold off a couple of lenses (down to a round 20 now) . . . .which will go some way to funding the upgrade from my 5yr old Mac Mini to an M1 Mac Mini. Anyway, I figure that April 2023 is when I will start thinking about camera bodies 🤦♂️🤦♂️
My main reason for selling my GH5 and getting the GH6 would be lowlight performance. Is the difference in lowlight performance striking or subtle in your opinion?
Thanks for watching! This video took a while to put together and I hope it's helpful. Thanks for your questions on my RU-vid feed. I will follow that up in a separate video but you'll find some of those answers in this video comparison. Thanks for the video, Shane. The 4K 100fps footage at the shore at the 5:24 mark looked great. Quick Question: Were you using autofocus for all the shots of you talking? I noticed some shots you were pretty far away from the camera (probably way too far away to see on the flip-out screen if you were in focus or not). Did you have to re-shoot many / any takes due to wandering autofocus? And finally, and I apologize if you already covered this already and I just missed it, is the autofocus of the GH6 much better in in Standard PP compared to V-LOG (when shoot at 24 / 25 / 30fps)? Thanks again.
I shot a lot of this with Face detection AF and the other parts with MF. That far-away shot was done by focusing on the tree I was next to in manual focus mode. Where I did use Autofocus it works fine unless you are moving a lot in the frame. Standing there, it will do a good job. If you get the GH5M2 it's worth turning the sensitivity down a bit to keep it locked on.
Thanks for sharing this review. I am using the GH5s and am thinking of upgrading to the GH6 but am worried about the built in fan noise the GH6 uses for cooling. Do you find the noise intrusive while recording low signal audio?
It's almost silent, but not quite. Unless I am up close to the camera, I can never hear it and you can set it to automatic which means it can run as it's needed rather than all of the time.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you for the info. The auto mode sounds great. I will use my mic off and away from the camera so that solves the problem. Subscribed
I just subscribed, so thank you for all you hard work and comparisons. So how does the Panasonic GH6 compare to the Sony FX3? I am trying to find an all around camera that can shoot cinematically and photography while also doing content creation. My budget is around $2,500. I know that's a big ask but there are so many cameras and technology moves so fast and I just don't want to get buyers remorse because of the next best thing. I prefer a camera that can stand the test of time. I really like the GH6 but I am open minded. Your thoughts or anyone else's would be very helpful before I buy this camera. Oops, I just watched your other video that answered my own question. It seems as if the GH6 is a beast :)
Thanks for the kind words. It really depends on your shooting scenario for video. Handheld the Gh6 is unreal and the colour science is as good as the FX3 but the Sony has the better autofocus and low light performance. Check into the G9II it’s a great camera I just traded in a few cameras to get one. I have some more videos on that coming up this week.
First time stumbling across your channel and really liked the style of comparison. I'm someone with video experience but looking to take it professionally. These cameras look like great options and within my budget. It seemed like from your review if you're going to be shooting a lot of slow-mo, hand held footage, the G6 is the way to go. Would you say it's worth the extra dollar?
If you need the 4k120 then the GH6 is the way to go. If you can work with 4k60 the GH5II is great. Both are very similar video-quality wise irrespective of what the specs say. The side-by-side comparisons on this test speaks for themselves. There's a bit more dynamic range on the GH6 when you shoot with VLOG but if you just want to film and put out videos, the GH5II is a great option. Check the prices for CFExpress Type B cards. If they are out of your budget, the GH5II might be the best choice.
The GH6 is MORE than worth the extra dollar. Take this from a person who wouldn't dream of buying GH5 or 6 because of the M43 sensor, now I am a converted GH user.
As a GH5II user, I think its about time people recognize that the AF though not quite as good as Sony or Canon, is still reasonably good and usable by comparison to everyone else. No one is running around claiming Nikon, Fuji, Leica, Pentax, of Olympus/ OM are leaps and bounds superior to Lumix, or Sony and Canon either… …
I have gh5 with sigma 16mm f1.4. I want either gh6 or gh5m2. Do you think it's a worthy upgrade? I don't really care for cinematography and stuff, just youtube videos and recording myself.
The GH6 is a massive upgrade and the 4k 120p is awesome. The GH5II is a great camera and is more similar to the original GH5 but with mode 10-bit modes and nicer color science.
G'Day Shane how you doin? I have just bought the Leica 9mm F1.7 and love it paired with the GH5 II - Have you used or tested this lens - would like to know your thoughts as well. I'm off this Friday to San Juan La Union in Philippines for 11 days hoping to get time to do some videos while I am there.
Hi Wayne, I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I think I will heave a loaner come in at some point soon enough. I am really looking forward to checking that one out in particular. That ultra-wide field of view is a great travel option for many types of shooting. Let me know how it goes. :)
Full frame cameras would probably over-expose in this situation and do. The S5 would have an issue with auto-exposure. There's always someone who misses the other 99% of the footage and complains about the 1% when clearly the rest was fine. Best of luck🤣
I have a question my GH5Mk 2 refuses to run on USB power with a depleted internal battery. This camera quit during a Multicam recording of a concert. This was the first time this has happened to me in 27 years of Multicam recordings. Is the GH6 any better in this regard? I discovered the problem was with the USB battery. The battery I was using wasn’t powerful enough. I have one now that is capable of powering the camera. I have tested up to 5 hours of continuous recording and I had still plenty of battery left.
You can get the GH5II on sale or second hand for half of the price of the GH6, also a lot of the feature of the GH6 are overkill for the average content creator/youtuber
Absolutely. That's pretty much what I said at the end of this video. The GH5M2 might be the best RU-vid creator camera out there if Autofocus isn't someones entire world. :)
gh6 is way different camera i terms of delivered quality in every aspect, i own all 2xgh5,5ii,and 6, even default 1080p 60fps @28mbit mp4 files from gh6 looks just amazing, where 5II will get some rough compression in bright areas and wb and skin tones 2 different worlds
@@nancyvictory5698 well, it depends on what exactly do you want to improve in your working environment. Let's say gh5 has unusable screen and I can't trust it without reference monitor, but gh5ii's screen is so much better, AF tracking is better and you will notice improvement even it's not that drastic as everyone expected, but with some lenses it works much better, and gh6 works even better, let say gh6 and panaleica 25-50 f1,7 is capable to track people for walking shots at actual 100mm almost perfect, where GH5II still struggles ang gh5 will just refuse even trying, with Leica 15mm f 1.7 almost no difference
I sold my GH5’s and now I have two GH5 Mk2’s and a GH6. I shoot multicam. Each camera is equipped with a Atomos Ninja V but they all record a 10 bit back up internal. On my GH6 I have a 2TB CF Express card where I record 5.7K ProRes. This means that not only do I have a high quality back up, I can punch in if I like to get in a little closer. Each camera can charge or be powered by USB-C. So even if a chord is pulled out the camera will continue without interruption. Each Ninja is powered by a D-Tap battery. All the batteries are secure to the tripod.
The truth of GH6 is same v-log DR as gh5/gh5m2/gh5s (80% IRE), only in DR boost ON it can bring extra 5% IRE in cost of 2000 ISO! Only S5/S1 series can shoot real 100% IRE v-log
First time on your channel and instantly subscribed! Great videos you got here, especially for us Lumix brand fans. I have a question for you Shayne if you can only have one all-round camera which would you choose S5 or GH6 and autofocus is not an issue, I shoot manually anyway. Thanks.
Thanks Igor! They are both great cameras. The S5 only advantage is low light. The rest of it goes to the GH6. Pair it was a great lens and it’s a monster. That said, I have 4xS5 cameras in a multi camera environment and it’s a killer setup but the gh6 is a better overall camera thanks to the IBIS and 4K120
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thx for a speedy reply. I thought as much, only was not certain about picture quality considering S5 is a full frame. And about the IBIS, it is not that S5 have lower-quality IBIS it is about the physical size of a sensor, smaller sensors ( like m4/3) are much easier to stabilize than full-frame ones being they are two times smaller. And I must say I was blown away when I heard you list the cameras that you own, well done mate!
I have done a lot of live streaming but all the live streaming I do involves multiple cameras. I can’t see that I will ever use the single camera streaming afforded by the GH5 Mk 2.
The GH5M2 can't do RAW, but the GH6 can via an ATAMOS ninja thanks to the new firmware 2.0 (mentioned in this vid). I've had an issue with streaking but I updated my firmware as soon as I got the camera. That said, I've never shot test lab scenes, only real world use.
ProRes RAW via HDMI to the Atomos Ninja recorders on the GH6 only. No raw on the GH5-II. BRAW would only be possible if Panasonic teamed up with Blackmagic and also supported their recorders, which currently is not the case.
Nice review. I have a cheap Sony ZV-1 just like a lot of the older Panasonic and even Olympus cameras as I did own a G85 and the Olympus M1 MKII highlights in the sun can get blown out. At this time still saving up, if I am going to go next level I am wanting something... Next level. I'm not sure if the GH6 cooling fan may get in the way of my audio. I see you review many of the cameras I am on the fence about on your newer videos... This is the first time I have ever seen your channel.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy someone has not seen my other studio channel :p. The SE Dynamite (DM1) is the only lifter I have. The Vocaster Two is loud enough that a lifter isn't really needed. Infact a lifter when I boost the noise floor causes more noise. I have a sweet new interface coming soon I'll be reviewing... If you want to see something really cool, watch my new movie. The second one Defeated By Darkness has the most CGI though :P. You'd never believe it was all recorded on a Sony Zv1
Hallo Shane, I am about to upgrade my gh5 to mk2. My reasons are AFC and IB improvements. For the rest I am happy with my gh5 goodies. Here in Holland retailers claim a mk2 baseline AF improvement of 10-15% in one area only. Please your response. Further, if memory serves me well Pana claims a mk2 AFC improvement of 80%. Please respond. In a video you say that the mk2 can be tweaked in AF on par with the gh6. What tweaking are you referring to? Hoping for your reaction, loving your user friendly reviews 😀👍, Frans.
Are you saying that the 8 bit codecs are NOT available in the GH6? If so, it is worth noting that Rhe latest version of FREE Resolve does NOT import 10 but codecs.
Good point about the free version of Resolve. I was all set to move to Resolve from Premiere Pro until I discovered that 10bit footage from the S5 wouldn't play properly in it.
The GH6 is a far bigger upgrade than the GH5M2. The GH5M2 has a lot of new features over the original GH5, but depending on your shooting situation, you might not even use them.
The GH6 has the most options and the S5 has the better image quality in standard frame rates but it also has recording limits in 10-bit, which the GH6 does not. Check out the new G9II review I just posted, it's a beast.
@@JeffBourke Yeah. Truly a Dog Bites Man headline. I bought mine on release, promptly discovered DFD, and exchanged it towards an FX3. Many such cases, probably.
Both cameras are great and have their own unique feature set. Of course, the GH6 has more to offer but it's not going to be the right choice for a lot of people. Not everyone will need what the GH6 does, and that's where the GH5M2 is a great camera.
