I was actually very surprised when I heard the price was only €2200,-. Thought it would be atleast €2500 like the GH5S was at launch. I think it is a great choice for existing m43 users who have lots of lenses for it. Other than that I don’t think it will bring any new customers, the S5 is just priced way too good and so is the image quality. Maybe the GH6 would sound a lot better if the S5 never existed...
Great Video. Thank you. Switching from Canon to Pana Lumix S5 II and 2 bodies, would you recommend 2x S5 II and also with Sigma 60-600mm for Tele or 1x S5II and 1x GH6 with 100-400mm as Tele and for video and photo?
The GH6 has Better specs than anything Sony and Canon are putting in their mirrorless bodies by a long shot. The no phase detection autofocus will always hurt Panasonic.
@@impatrickt True, but Shutter Angle, being able to record to an external SSD, having unlimited recording modes are all useful specs and what the GH6 can do. I won’t be getting this camera either. I’m sticking with my S5 hoping Panasonic comes out with an L mount EVA2 this year.
@@joshdiditt I talked about shutter angle in my S5 vs a7iv video. Every Sony user I know is making incredible videos without it. It’s not a big deal. SSD is fine but you’re rigging up at that point. Might as well throw an 12G sdi on the S5 and get unlimited 5.7K BRAW or ProRes RAW. GH6 specs sound really cool but they’re not really all that practical in the big picture.
I was a GH4 shooter for years and then held off on the GH5 for the power of the BMPCC4K. It's been my daily driver for weddings and corporate but now I miss all the nice things of an all in one camera. I was thinking that surely the GH6 would answer that. It's not blowing my mind. I really wanted it to blow my mind. At this point I think an old GH5 is a better purchase.
I'm the opposite. I've got a g9 and a bmpcc4k and I'm selling both to get a gh6. the lowlight capabilities look as gold as the bmpcc4k to my eyes, handheld high res will be extremely nice for detail shots, and the ibis being even better than my g9 is magic. The combination of quality and ease of use will make it a perfect replacement for both of my cameras now.
You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy Sony, not join them! - All Panasonic users watching this video Kidding aside, I think you put it perfectly that if the GH6 had phase detect AF and 4k60 10 bit, that would have been a good enough upgrade for many people.
@@secoTheSonicFan Thats the excuse they gave in the B&H podcast. To Toneh Northrup the Panasonic people said that GH6 was so long in development, that phase detect was not on their agenda many years ago and that they could not change it during development. No one knows why for sure. And even those excuses above come from Lumix USA, and AFAIK Japan is not known for letting overseas PR people gain deep insight into their corporate decisions and policies.
in 2019/2020, the GH6 release would have been a beast of a camera… but today, in 2022 i‘m shooting with the s5 and wait until panasonic gives us the next generation of their fullframe cameras… great video! 🎉
As a GH5 user who also now uses Sony a7iv, you expressed pretty much everything I've been thinking about it too. Just go FF for that price now a days, even though it's still a pretty awesome camera.
I am really struggling between GH6 or Sony a7IV, I can't decide. What would you recommend me? I want to shoot some Vlogging & travel footage of nature scenaries. GH6 has the better image stabilization (for videos) & 4K120p. But the a7IV has the better auto-focus. What can you say to both cameras? :)
@@Fbnt1 I feel like so much depends on what's most important to you. Keep in mind if you switch systems you have to buy all new glass, etc. I will say I miss the stabilization from panasonic but sony isn't terrible. Sony is way sharper in general and my hunch is that a7iv 120 fps in HD probably looks pretty similar to gh6 120 in 4k
@@Fbnt1 Perhaps a phone is a good option..easy small good image quality..recommended by Casey Niestat used by Mr Pratt..see link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HjI1O11S8KY.html
It’s funny in relationships, how sometimes the thing you say isn’t a big deal, becomes the biggest deal. That’s my relationship with Panasonic for the past 6 years. Had a Panasonic G7 and currently own a Panasonic G9. I kept saying to myself autofocus wasn’t a big deal, that it had so much going on for it that it negates that one Achilles heel. …But you see how little compromises other cameras have these days and you keep wondering. “Why are you trying so hard to stay?” Pride? Ego? Color Science? Either way, I think I’m ready to switch brands. I hope Panasonic the best, I just wished it focused on the real issue.
@@ericsbriggs i am more than happy! A7IV is amazing. The crop doesn’t matter to me I just take a couple steps back if I need to fit more into my frame. Also the 1080 120fps is good I upscale it onto my 4K timeline and color grade it and you can barely tell the difference. I really love the camera
Dude. Thanks for this. Been a GH4 shooter for some years and I had my mouse over the pre-order button on the GH6, but I wound up going for the S5 after I saw Gerald Undone say he'd also recommend the S5 over the GH6. Got some crap from a friend who ordered the GH6. But man.. I'm glad I'm getting into the full frame format now.
I haven't tried the GH6 so I don't know what I'm talking about. But I think that the GH6 is a seriously cool successor to the mighty GH5. It's not geared towards RU-vidrs at all and I really think it has it's place for documentary, commercial and studio work! In a way I think that this camera completely destroys something like the BMPCC6K because of that IBIS. I just bought the S5 and with my Sigma 24-70 and Atomos Ninja V I'm not really feeling like I'm missing anything. But the fact that lenses are so much cheaper for MFT makes the GH6 a very cool option for filmmakers who's already invested in and loves the MFT-system. I hope that I can test one out but for now I'm happy with my S5 and GH5 combo! Thanks for another great video!
i dont think filmmakers are invested in. they all use manual focus, they dont use native lenses, they use 3rd party fast primes with adapters, speedboosters.. if and when m43 dies they will only lose on their cam body and adapter. they will keep lenses and simply buy new adapter for new camera.. big price are gonna pay amateurs like me, who got gh5 impressed by video recording specs but use camera for fun stuff and ofc we use autofocus and because of that we have to use native lenses.. m43 lenses are gonna drop in price so hard as with time when fullframe gets better and cheaper
@@end27 Filmmakers aren't invested in mft? Of course they are! You need to remember that there are many different types of filmmakers. MFT is and has been a very big thing among people who need their equipment to be smaller than full frame glass. Look at lenses like the 35-100 from Panasonic! A perfect example of a lens which doesn't need to be super big but still have the reach for someone who's depending on traveling a lot and implement the run and gun or documentary style. I really don't think that MFT is going to die. It still has a very viable place for serious filmmakers and the GH5 is still going to be strong on the market now that it's going to be even cheaper after the release of GH6. It feels like the "MFT is dead" comes from RU-vidrs wanting to implement chock value to their videos. It's still immensely popular in Japan for instance! If i remember correctly, OM-Systems reported having the largest market share among any lens mount in Japan in 2021. So saying MFT is dead is like saying that Full Frame is dead just because the majority of filmmaking takes place on super 35-sensors.
@@KBmediaOnline It's a bit better now, yes. But MFT is still cheaper and smaller. There's always going to be room for something that has a smaller form factor and costs less! One thing that's easier to achieve on FF is better dynamic range which was a bummer with the GH6. The S5 still has better dynamic range than the GH6. Still, I bet that most of us would fail in a side by side comparison in a MFT vs FF situation. At the end of the day the most important thing is what you film, not with what you film.
@@Naumachia what commercial or even indie films are shooting MFT? if by filmmaker you mean videographers i would agree but in any major metropolitan market MFT is all but dead in the industry.
Your sentiments on the GH6 is exactly why after owning a gh4 and gh5 for many years I finally switched to full frame with the Sony a74. I got fed up using a speed booster with every lens, the crops etc. I also don't care about some of the extra stuff they added in the GH6 so I am glad I didn't wait and pulled the trigger on the a74.
@@LaurenceLee Panasonic. It does external raw recording and the ibis is much much better. You can replace auto focus with the twist of a wrist, stabilization requires gear and weight.
@@cheeeeezewizzz stop the cap. Lmao most peoples ability to track a subject using manual focus is no where near close to Sony Autofocus. Only thing Panasonic has is better ibis. I have the A7iv and do handheld scenes all the time it’s not bad by any means
That pulsating autofocus in the opening shot is embarassing for Panasonic, and makes me feel really good about moving to A7IV even if the ergonomics and menus aren't as enjoyable. I DO think the new flip screen design is brilliant and I hope Sony and others begin to copy it
I’m waiting for the day where we finally disagree so we can argue and just get it out of the way. But that day….is not today. The S5 definitely does feel like the GH6, and based on the price points/specs it feels weird to even buy a GH6 when the S5 is right there. And you know I love my GH5.
One of the benefits I see is not having to worry about it cropping when changing to slo mo and also being able to shoot in 4k 120p. Cant wait for an S-Series cam that will have similar features. Still love my S-Series though
You pretty much nailed it. I keep Blackmagic cams for when I want the best image quality and have two GH5S cams for corporate or event work when I travel. They can see in the dark and I can use tiny native lenses on them. I can even film RAW with them if I want to. I use a Canon when I need the AF. The GH6 looks cool but just can’t justify that purchase in 2022…especially with DFD focus.
Still rocking my GH3 I bought used in 2010 to make YT vids. No one’s ever complained about the video quality. Only reason I’d upgrade to anything else is autofocus - great video Patrick!
I love my S5, and have an XT-3 as a b-cam. Upon hearing the specs i thought for sure this (GH6) would be the one to swap for my XT-3, but after looking at footage and knowing how my S5 sees in the dark, I'm defintely better off getting an A7IV or just a second S5. Full frame 4K 4:2:2 10 Bit just towers over the crop sensors these days
I'm torn. As someone else said, I want to want it, but... Originally my dilemma was GH4 vs the a6300, but I waited long enough to get the GH5 at launch. But now to move on, I don't know. I might just rent an S5 to see how I like that. Really, it feels like Windows Phone. It's great and even does some things better than the competition, but it's really too little, too late. If I jump on the train, I think I'm just delaying the inevitable.
I agree with everything you said here. That rear LCD implementation is fantastic. It keeps the moaning, crying RU-vidrs happy so they can see themselves, and for the rest of us we still have the fast and inconspicuous tilt.
gh6 beat a7sIII in many aspects even image quality. See the Potato Jet review. He shows that GH6 is better in 3200 and 6400 ISO than a7sIII for 1300 USD less. Even DR of GH6 with the boost on is better than A7SIII in this test.
@@impatrickt This is really interesting to me; why would you take the S5 over the Sonys? Seems like if you're going FF, the Sony's would be superior to the S5 in almost every way. Is it just preference? Also, I agree with some of your assessment of the GH6 and I would've upgraded to the S series by now but the deal breaker for me is the lack of L Mount lenses, and especially affordable L Mount lenses, both Cine and stills. Even though the S5/S1 are cheaper now than the GH6, the L Mount lenses would negate the savings as you'd have to spend practically double what you would for M43 lenses. If the S series would've had EF mount, it would've been a no brainer for me. Thanks for the review!
Your past few videos have not missed and this is no exception👊🏼 As I stated on my Potato Jet comment this camera is just weird to me MAINLY because of how capable the S5 and S1 are. Also, I keep telling myself Panasonic isn't done with improving them even more with future firmware. Much love from East Tennessee🙏🏼
Yes, I see what you're saying and to me at least this camera is more going to appeal to current users. I doubt its going to win anyone to switch over or start their career with this platform given all the other options out there. If this ends up being the last GH, well it'll give a few more years of use and pay for itself many times over...and if in a few years we actually get a gh7 with PDAF organic sensors, blah blah blah then I'll have more than enough bank to switch or stay for a few more years.
What a breath of fresh air! You sir are spot on! I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's better to buy the GH5. Panasonic only had to fix one thing and they had five years to do it!
Wasn't feeling this review until I got my hands on the camera and you're right. It's not much better than the GH5 and I prefer the BGH1 if I'm rigging. I 100% don't mind the crop or auto focus. I just don't think it's offering much more (for me) than having to buy new recording media/readers and massive file sizes. I'm returning mine and sticking with what I have. The GH6 is by no means a bad camera, it's that the previous cameras are really good.
I was thinking about what i should buy as my first "big" camera as i had zero equipment before. I was standing between the gh5 and the s5. In the end i have bought a gh5ii cause it was as cheap as i could get the first generation and i realised that in the next 3 years i could not afford a good full frame lens. When these reviews started to pop, first i questiond my self but now i think, i had the best deal as i could right now. After the next 3 years i will see if full frame is more available in price but till that point i am going to enjoy what i think is the perfect m43 camera with hella cheap lenses.
The only review we really needed for the GH6. Great points Patrick! 💪 I think that Panasonic had to price it much lower, to hit the market with a low price for a great camera. 💸
I think you pretty much nailed it. It is… neat, but it wasn’t born in a vacuum like its iconic predecessor was. And I ask myself, what IS the upgrade path TO the GH6 that makes sense these days? If I had to sit and think about it? GH4 and earlier owners, early MFT BMPCC owners? bUT PrO’s fOcUs MaNuALlY people? Idk. Maybe folks who have a second mortgage on a sizeable MFT glass library? For my part, even as a hobbyist, if my gear was all stolen tomorrow, and I had to buy it all again, I probably wouldn’t be writing Panasonic a cheque for this product.
I think YOU nailed it: what’s the upgrade path to the GH6 indeed? The BMPCC4K was arguably a cinecentric GH5 with better recording options and menus -its adopters might not find the GH6 a compelling upgrade.
Ok PT. You have to get one of these listed cameras which do you go with. Gh6 with kit 12-60: $3600 CAD S5 with kit 20-60: $2500 CAD S1 with kit 24-105: $3200 CAD Thanks for the help.
I know this is old now, but having gone from m4/3 to the S5-II, I just don't see the "point" in m4/3, except for travel and stuff where space really is an issue, and even then... some of the good zooms for m4/3 are MASSIVE and crazy expensive too. And it doesn't matter WHAT specs the sensor has, so long as it remains just over half the size, it's not going to look as good.
Crap - your words convinced me to not buy the GH6, but your video is convincing me to buy the GH6. The video quality is awesome and the autofocus locked on perfectly the whole time.
@@impatrickt dammit - you're right. I was just clicking around and doing some spot checks and I saw that it looked good. arrghh. Thanks for being a brutally honest reviewer and not a Panasonic fanboy. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and change to Sony.
Patrick absolutely A1+ video mate! I would say you totally nailed it hard! You know Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Nikon & Black Magic very well. See here is the thing, I believe we are both in the same boat. I have a GH5 & two lenses (12-35mm f2.8 Lumix & Olympics 7-17 f2.8 PRO), love the 4/3 system. The low light and AF is weak with the GH5. Not interested in speed booster, like why get extra stuff!? I have two Sonys cameras now (A1 & A7C). Yes, Yes, Yes waited for the GH6, wanted them to improve the AF so bad and improve the light (if they could). That is it, that is all I wanted from the GH6. Sadly, very very AF a bit better but Sony, Canon, Nikon AF just way better. So why why why won't Panasonic get their AF if anything on the same level as those other companies? ...too hard, too expensive 🤷🏽. I so want to use my GH again but if the GH6 is just not there it might be time to sell off my GH5. I might hold off on the glass and hope something, maybe firmware or GH6(II) comes that address the AF. 🔴 BEST VIDEO I HAVE SEEN ON THE GH6 SUBJECT. NICELY DONE PATRICK!
That Person looses all credibility in my mind when he says that full frame cameras have gotten smaller. I put 100 to 300 mm lumux lens on my G9. Can you tell similar sized and priced optiom for my S5? This is an age of celebrating stupidity. 🍾 . Camera is not only body. Lenses are the heaviest part.
24-70 on an S5 is a lighter combo than the 12-35 on the GH6. Please kindly pour some champagne for yourself. The reality distortion field that long term MFT shooters have should be studied. It’s like flat earthers.
@@impatrickt well, few lenses are at par but in general they are not. Regarding distortion, that's pixel peeping. Show that distortion to any of your clients or a general consumer and tell me if one of them can spot that. Fact is that even GH4 4k videos look super gorgeous on a 65 inch TV. Same with S5 and I will call that similar for a layman who are all your clients.i rest my case here. Nothing more to add. We have seen a better betacam loosing to VHS format pl in past so loosing M43 format with so many advantages isn't the first.
All i hear from non panasonic users ::: AUTOFOCUS. Why would you buy a m4/3 in 2022 ? It's cheaper ! A7s3 is 4200 and gh6 2200(kinda easy to compare with something twice expensive...) . A lens on FF =1000- 800 to be just average/decent. M4/3 is big and very cheap , this is why is so good. I have a FF camera for photos and yeah if you wanna go for a bit of more "straight out of camera " go for S5 !(in same budget ) . easy to recommend a 5K camera. IBIS is the best from any cameras , even GH5 doing handheld is a beast compared to any sony. what do you expect its a smaller sensor. I do think just in res 4K/120 p 10 bit is perfect to just justify a higher price. I would prefer my IBIS being so good other a "perfect AF from sony " very conveninent on gimbal i reckon(and i love A7s3). Main problem is that is there wasnt a S5 at 1800 we wouldnt arguee on that. And i prefer a non crop good IBIS video on GH6 than a crop on sony A7 IV (wich everyhing is expensive.) Pick a GH6 18-35 sigma 1.8 viltrox ring + Mitakon 25 0.95 and 17 0.95 a sigma 50 1.4 laowa 10 f2 MFT . And you are good to go.
@@impatrickt 18-35 is 24-70 and they are all big so adding a speedbooster make it just nearly as big as them. And all others lens I got are way smaller. Check 25mm 0.95 how small it is and what this produce. If you use handheld it's smaller than any of system. And also if you use prime Panasonic lenses like 42.5 1.2. but sigma 18-35 has been too much advertised as the beat of M4/3 and yeah it start to be big to have this.
it's so funny you mention this, but yeah the top of my very short list on why i got an S5 was the amount of math i wouldn't have to do with that camera! the lens is the lens! but yeah fantastic video! and it just really kind of validates what i was feeling last night watching the reveal, i kept asking myself, "ok yeah, cool, but uhhhhh, i'll be keeping my S5"
They need to listen to Canon, Sony or other brand user's need. Listen to real world users. Do surveys. My fellow and I are both Sony users. I had GH2, GH3 and GH5. We were talking about what m43 camera Panasonic come out that will make us both want to buy one. The answer we come out is high speed camera. If GH6 can do 4k 240p and FHD 480p, we are very likely to buy one for slow motion purpose. Listen there is no reason for a sony a7sIII or a7Iv user to jump ship to m43 just because you bump up the resolution and frame rate. Panasonic listen to our feedback. Canon and sony users won't sell their system and buy this GH6. You can only attracting existing m43 users and potential new filmmaker. And I can still see this group people get less and less as time goes. The only way you can gain is by attracting other brand users that still want to buy this camera for some reason. The only reason my friend and I can think of is high speed. m43 can not exceed full frame in high iso and dynamic range, and you can not even have similar auto focus. Your m43 advantage is small sensor so faster process speed. So focus on your strength . If a7sIII can do 4k 120p and fhd 240p 2 years ago. You should be able to do 4k 240p and fhd 480p at 2022. It is reasonable. Your goal is not to have other brand user jump ship but rather willing to buy your camera as a b cam or c cam. I think Panasonic totally missed the opportunity.
@@impatrickt Right Panasonic need to go extreme. Either really high resolution 8k or even 12k or just 4k sensor but real high speed. Need to attract other brand users.
My gh5ii doesn’t pulsate or lose focus. Course my canon is better but my gh5ii is decent enough. It does depend what you’re using it for. My focus settings if it helps anyone: AFS..not continuous…area 1 plus human, sensitivity -3 speed -3. …no pulsating very good focusing. Panasonic needs to make these settings standard. But, if you’re a youtuber with just basic video needs, better get a Sony or canon. Filmmakers rarely use autofocus anyway. Cheers.
@@impatrickt ? Um ok lol that’s exactly what I said. If you’re doing RU-vid go Sony or canon. I use canon for My RU-vid and Panasonic and Canon on gigs . (un subbing for calling me a BSer. Good luck on your “filmmaking” career without taking advantage of focus pulling 🤣 on any brand
To be fair, I'm kind of surprised for the hate on m43. Maybe I just haven't gotten into full frame enough? But it seems like most of the issues m43 has, lower dynamic range and bad lowlight are kind of mitigated with this camera, with its dynamic range push, and better lowlight. To be fair, I like the flexibility that speedboosters give me, the stabilization, and the crazy slow motion options. And now with the dynamic range boost, kinda feels like creatively this camera could do anything you want. Maybe we're just getting to a point of good enough cameras. I felt like the gh5 was almost there. If the gh6 had raw internal, it would be the ultimate imo. What is it that full frame gives you that you're missing on the gh6?
Mmm, I disagree on the points of prores (coming from ursa, the prores 422 was so insanely gorgeous). I also don’t care about the automatic focus as I’ve manual focused my whole life. The biggest deal breaker is the dynamic range and low light, which just comes with a m43. I want an a7siii but I jus can’t justify it as shooting has taken a back seat for editing, but im intrigued about the s5 for sure… so cheap. How bad is the moire on that? Seems like that could be a deal breaker. But the value is insane. I’d consider the gh6 if it had amazing dynamic range
@@impatrickt I ended up sending an offer for an S5, but later realised it was the s1. I got the s1 with v log upgrade which came to the same price as the S5. I wonder if I made the right choice. A lot of pros and cons. Your vids helped sway me to the Panasonic side for sure
You are bang on man! They kicked the can for way too long on this and people just don't have the time to wait on maybe's! And when they do release a new camera the main issues STILL exist! It sure is funny how EVERY other camera manufacturer can have good autofocus but Panasonic can't seem to pull it off! Sure it keeps getting better but its been a long journey to a system that is still considered half-ass and unexceptable!
I chose the S5 over the gh5 ii because the price for the body + lens was a little better and I said why not get the full frame look especially for a little less money. Currently the S5 is priced at 1500 usd with a free 85mm lens included. Gh6 is 1700 body only. The main reasons for the gh6 are if you want 4k 120 or you really want cf express cards and prores codecs. Everything in the gh6 and then some will probably be in the successor to the S1H soon. I've never had a problem with the autofocus on my S5. I just use it for handheld vlogging or locked off on a tripod for video. For stills the subject detection works great. It will draw a box around the entire cat but when I check the files on the computer the cats face and eyes are always in focus so it must be detecting the face and eyes even if it is just drawing the box around the whole animal. Bottom line the af works great for everything I do. I am tempted to buy another S5 especially to get the free lens. I would also grab a gh6 if I found a really good discount offer
I'm still rolling with my Fuji XT-4 and I'm not gonna lie... Kinda been falling into the rabbit hole for the GH6 only because I kinda want another camera for vlogging/getting nice quick b roll when I'm snowboarding or out in the elements. This review definitely helped me!
You should try Sigma MFT lenses. The reviews I’ve seen using them on a G9 have slightly less but smoother AF speed transition with way less pulsing. I’m sure the GH6 will be better with them.
@@impatrickt okay, thanks for clarifying. 👌Did you try putting AF sensitivity down? I think the RU-vidr I saw had a Sigma 16 1.4, but since you are having an issue with the 30 1.4, not too sure anymore.
@@chinitopinoy1726 no, and ive spoken with Gerald Undone. there's no reliable way to make this AF work consistently. It can, and will mess up for absolutely no discernible reason every shoot.

I almost bought the GH6, but glad I didn't. The GH5S does everything I need for now. I WILL however go to Full Frame when someone comes out with my perfect camera: Full Frame, Great IBIS, Anamorphic Modes, Recording in ProRes, Tilted Screen, Power by (USB) cable, no warbly rolling shutter No one seems to know how to produce such a camera. Until then, I'll wait
Totally get your hesitation. I do think that uncropped 4k120 and 5.7k60 are where the GH6 warrants more attention and differentiates itself from the S5. Like you, I have a Bmpcc4k and both these kids are worth chucking in the ball pool to see if they play together. Last week I had an overseas edit job, which turned into a filming gig. A GH6 would have made a real difference. All I had was a DJI pocket!!! Lol Got the job done, but, as an always with you, (lighter and more capable than an S cam, cam) I have to wonder if the GH6 isn’t my problem solver to ensure I blow clients away, as I’ll always bring it. Like the underpass vibes and sound was good too. Keep playing with the GH6 😎
I own GH5 GH6 and S5ii. Got a great deal to straight swap my GH6 to s5 + sigma 85mm f1.4. A cam is S5ii + Lumix S pro 28-70 B cam S5 + sigma 85mm C cam GH5 + speedbooster 18-35mm What do you think?
@@impatrickt i shoot weddings and real estate (few headshots interview) I kept the gh5 especially for weddings as I also have the Helios 44-2 😅 it becomes both A cam and B cam 😅
The 4 channel audio support and 100Mpix still mode are great, but it does feel like biggest issue, the AF was the first thing they should have addressed. That said, I think there are ways to mitigate this. Also, if being used for cinema, AF be damned.
My thing with new gear is all cameras are good now (as you said) and i hope people just let us mft users be. Im tired if not being treated like a professional when those same people ask me what i used cause i can make an image woth my camera cause it the principals. Cameras are tools. Use what you want. After this review he needed new wiper! But I'm agree with you - I waited with my decision of buying a GH6, a GH5S or a S5. Now I know that I will not buy a GH6 because I don't need a lot what the camera offers and I will get a brand new GH5S body or S5 body for about €1.450,00 ... I will not pay €2.200,00 for things I don't need if I get 95% of the image quality for 800bucks less.
Great video. I agree with you on the facts about ProRes so much and think it's highly overrated as a recording format. I also mainly use h264 or h265 to capture footage and use ProRes proxies for faster editing, which only takes a few minutes to create and doesn't have to sit on your storage for the rest of the footage lifetime.
With the m1 chips h265 is decoded natively by dedicated hardware....so 8k h265 on my iPad pro 14z chip (not even the m1) decodes instantly like the iPad isn't even trying and it's half the size of h264 for the same image quality.
From 7:25 my thoughts exactly. There is just no reason to settle for sub par autofocus in 2022. If you manual focus you may as well stick with he gh5. Why invest in a camera where the AF is just going to wobble all over the place, and if anyone tells you it "better","ok", or "good enough" they are not leveling with you.
I'd love to see an image comparison to the Pocket 4k, bc I'm not even sure the GH6 has it beat on that regard. So far I haven't been a fan of any images I've seen out of the GH6 when comparing it to Blackmagics or newer Sonys, and I've always been in love with Panasonic's colors
@@Aviciiz I watched the DPReviewTV video comparing the GH6 to the S1H and I really thought they look very different. At around 4:48 they have a side by side that really showcases how the S line has deeper colors with fine detail, while the GH6 is looking like oversharpened phone footage. I mean, a lot of what I've seen looks worse than footage from a GH5 even though the specs are spectacular. I just wonder why
I love the gh6 video codecs and even the body, so much inside but I prefer the colors and autofocus of the Sony A7 IV. I've had quite a few Panasonic cameras...But AF is terrible. I'm not too manual, but why not for manual static shots, if you want a great depth of field in motion, you can forget the Panasonic.
Well this has so many film making features that the s5 doesn't. it's a difference in use case. If you are a film maker, do documentary, shoot for Netflix, etc the gh6 is clearly superior. If your only concern is image quality then the s5 shoots video that isn't as sharp or detailed, but has better dynamic range and lowlight.
My biggest let down with this camera is the hdmi delay. I've seen that they didn't fix the lag and it was my biggest issue with the gh5. I need bigger screens for good focus and using a gh5 with a monitor makes you feel drunk. Like 250-280ms delay. When the subject left focus range or even the frame, it takes a third of a second for you to realize while looking on a monitor. And good focus with a moving subject (like a high energy music video) was extremely hard on the tiny screen while recording. Otherwise, it's fantastic from what it seems.
do you think the s5 has maxed out when it comes to updates and the gh6 is only getting started to what it be able to add for the price point. i want to get an s5 because of the full frame and price, but want an gh6 because of it's future updates that should keep up to par and match the second generation s series whenever they drop.
All I really wanted to know was how it compares to the S5. For some reason literally every youtuber is “This is the next best cinema camera you could buy for this price.” but I saw none of that hype for the S5 and they’re the same price. The s5 looks far more appealing. Just the lens options that ruin it for me
Anther well done and honest video. I really dig your style of shooting and communication. But it still doesn't help me with my ongoing, tourtuous dilemma. How do I decide between the S5 and A7 IV???!!!
If i had the money I'd grab the A7S3 or even the A74 but I'm already invested in MFT glass right now and can't afford full frame glass. The GH6 is like a poor man's A7S3 with a few more bangs and whistles but shitty AF. It's perfect for my needs and budget right now as I was already planning on getting a GH5s to add to my GH5 :)
@@impatrickt yeah that's a possibility but I have a need for two houses/systems. I will go to Sony eventually but right now the GH5/6 combo fits the need and budget 😊
✌🏼 Watched till the end crew! I think I narrowed down that mic combo you had going, new VideoMic GO 2 with white original Wireless GO and a Wireless GO reporter stick. I just couldn’t figure out how the three of them are connected together.
Interesting, I would actually prefer OM-1 in that class. Smaller, lighter, stacked sensor, PDAF, 12 bit 4:4:4 raw out, dual SD card slots, find the dynamic range and colorscience better too.
