With the G9 we have the possibility to use the EXT intern, if we use that and print no bigger than A4, are the results better or worse in comparison with the extern 2x Teleconverter? For me this is very important because i can than switch the 100-400 against the 50-200 and than i have everything with one lens less!
Hi there sorry what is EXT intern? Is that the software crop than upscale mode? If it's something like that you would definitely lose a bit of quality especially when it's 2x crop
Hi Richard, When you go in the resolution mode of the G9 you can choose L, M and S. S creates a 5 Mp foto ,i think (and Panasonic thinks too) more than enough for a A4 print, So that brings me back to my first question. I hope that you understand me now.
If you want to print A4 at 300dpi, you will need almost 9MP. 5MP is OK, but higher resolution would be better. So yes, you can shoot at 200mm using the 50-200 and crop from 20MP to 5MP which gives you effective 400mm focal length and print reasonably good photo, assuming your original photo is very sharp.
The question is/was, is the quality better or worse than the use of the 2x teleconverter in comparison with the S mode on the G9. The 50-200 in the S mode (5 mp) is also faster (same diafragma, i think at least one stop!).You lost light with the 2x TC .Again just for an A4 print, so be practical, please Richard and not theoretical.
Sorry I deleted the video I post up this morning as there were some mistakes in my original video. So it should be fixed now and my apologies for the inconvenience! Thanks ST8OFPlay for letting me know!
I have a G9 and the 100-400, but I really think I'll replace the lens with the 50-200 and the 2x teleconverter. I've been shooting recently at f/8 just to make sure I can handle losing 2/3 stops of light, and in most cases it's not an issue. In addition, there are MANY times when I wish my 100-400 wasn't quite so long, for instance when I'm shooting kids sports games or shooting either large animals or those which I can get close to. Being able to use the 50-200 alone and get the extra light in those situations would be great.
GX9, TS200 and 12-60 and 50-200 reviews are the best out. Please continue doing what you do because you answer the questions in your video that I would ask.
Thank you for the video and you certainly helped me make the decision to purchase it... have had the 50-200mm for a few weeks now and so far wow! Cant quite believe how sharp it is.. its right up there with primes in most cases which too me at least is remarkable..a really flexible range which is great for sports, wildlife and portraits.. you get wonderful compression and impressive bokeh..
Hey Neil, glad you like the video! I am pretty impressed by the image quality from this lens as well. Actually.the same can be said about most recent Leica lenses for m43.
How does this lens compare to the Olympus 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO? With a 1.4x tele-converter, it becomes 56-210mm F/4.0 which is almost identical in range and aperture to the Panasonic 50-200.
Another great video Richard, thanks for sharing. Just one advice, if you use lav mic you will upgrade the sound quality dramatically and your videos will be perfect!
I have just uploaded a new video, do you mind let me know if the audio is better? (I know there is a few clipping in my new video.. shouldn't left it in auto adjustment)
This review is amazing! I also watched you review on last February on the Leica 100-400mm f5.6-6.3 vs Leica 200mm f2.8. At that time in February, the 100-400mm was the best choice to get for versitality and price. Now, having the Leica 50-200mm available on the market, if you had only the money to buy one of them, would you get the Leica 100-400mm or the Leica 50-200mm (with 2.0 teleconverter)? I am shooting with the Panasonic G9. Your insights are really appreciated.
Hi sylvainhimmo, I personally would get the 50-200 w teleconvertor as the focal length is more versatile for everyday use. While the 100-400 I won't use it inless I really need the range. But both are great and sharp lenses
Thank you so much Richard for you feedback! I am saving to get the lens next month! Where I live, in october, trees have beautiful colors! This lens will be amazing for bird watching at that time! Best regards
Dear Richard, thank you for this review. Tell me what 2.0 teleconverter you are using. Maybe give me link or exactly model name. I think this is good idea to have it in bag.
hi there, the teleconverter is Pnaasonic DMW-TC20. Note this TC only works with two lenses at the moment. The Leica 200 f/2.8 and this Leica 50-200 f/2.8-4
Thanks - good review. With the price drop, I plan on buying the G9 soon. The 12 ~ 60mil. & the 50 ~ 200mil. with one of the teli converters, as you endorse, will probably be the 2 lenses I acquire as well as getting the camera. Any preference on one or the other on the 2 teli converters ?
great review, another lens to consider... was leaning at 100-300 but sharpness issues might make me reconsider. That price is very compelling.... Why cant I just have them all!
Thanks ppage27! The Leica 50-200 is definitely a much sharper lens than the 100-300 and much better build quality..etc. The only thing stopping you from having all is your credit card ;)
I have a question bro. I just picked up a used panasonic 50-200m f2.8-4.0 telephoto lens for my GH5. The lens performs fine but just wondering while turning the zoom ring at around 120mm I feel a bit a resistance. If you look at the back of the lens, this is the point where the elements reverse direction. Do you think this is normal? I was expecting to have the same feel all the way through the zoom range but it just feels a bit rough at that point then smooths out. Its not major and doesn't require excessive force to turn, but you definitely feel a change in the smooth turning of the ring.
hi JapaneseMonster, sorry it's been a while since i last played with this lens so can't really answer this question.. from your description, it seems normal if it's at the point when the elements starting to go opposite direction but maybe someone else with the lens can answer this question better than me
With the 1.4x TC there is almost no noticable difference in AF performance. With the 2x TC, autofocus is slightly slower but difference is really small when shooting day scenes
@@TheRealRichardWong Sorry for this question, Richard... Is there also a loss in the speed of the camera using the teleconverters?... Thank you for your answer!
Yes with 1.4x your maximum aperture is reduced by 1 stop... 2x TC lost 2 stops.. so for example a f/2.8 lens become f/4 lens with 1.4x and becomes f/5.6 with 2x
hi Cano2, ok thanks! I had an Olympus 75 f/1.8 previously and have used it with a few micro four thirds bodies with great results. The colours, sharpness are great. Bokeh is absolutely fantastic. However, I can't really answer about the focus as I don't have one anymore to test it. But there is no reason for me to think it would not work great with the G9
Thank you for the review. Great pics, even if one of them did make me a bit sad- bothers me seeing primates in cages. I don't like the way humanity treats them.
