I wish OMD or Pana would release a tiny sized camera with all the bells and whistles of their bigger high end model. Compact overall system size is the reason I still keep my m43 gear.

Great test. I just bought it. The only thing that really can be better is the battery because of capacity and because it takes 130 minutes to recharge (and in this time you cannot use it). It’s a good idea to buy a external base to charge and a second battery.

Yes, still using my half broken Nikon J3 with the 18.5/1.8 lens (50mm equivalent). Still better results than a m43 sensor with a slow kit-lens. BUT, I do own the cheap Pana 25mm/1.7 and this should make for really nice shots with the GX850 with short depth of field :)

Another excellent review - thank you! One advantage of this camera is for existing MFT users. I have a Panasonic G80 which I love - but I quite fancy one of these to accompany it - and take with me on my bike etc. Considering the lens alone costs £340 in the UK - the camera's only costing £80 on top! And although not very bright, it's a handy lightweight small lens. I would consider using this lens on my G80 since the 12-60 is considerably bigger.

Gordon Laing Well my Gx8 had it too and i have seen the camera store do it with i believe the G7. It's called snapfilm if i recall. It was buried in the menu's but i had a quick button on the touchscreen for it. it memorized 2 focus points and then smoothly transitioned in a preset programmable time. obviously during 4k Can't check where it was in the menu since we went all fujifilm a couple of weeks ago. The X-T2/X-T20 eliminated the need for Panasonic for video for us. And Fujifilm is just better and faster for stills.

I'll look out for it next time I review one, but I have never seen that feature outside the GH5.

Hello. This is a question about Mr. Lange new book mentioned in this review. Forgive me please about asking my question before finishing your review. Does your book cover photography tips and education geared also towards cameras such as the Panasonic DMC-LX10? This is the camera that I just purchased, and would like to find more information on the compact cameras, as I use it for photography on extended backpacking trips and choose the lighter weight option of a camera to cary.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 6 лет назад
Hi there, the book is entirely shot with mirrorless cameras BUT the techniques apply to most cameras. There's a handful where I've used ultra wide or telephoto lenses, but generally it's about light, composition and technique. So while it won't all be applicable to your LX10, you'll hopefully find some of it useful, and it also works as a travel coffee table book. Plus, you'll be supporting my work too! Thanks!

Guys: great review as you hit on the nail exactly what I was trying to get my head around in trying to choose between GX800/RX100 I&II/G7xII/TZ100/LX15 when it comes to sensor size and f ranges. I keep thinking surely bigger sensor must be better...but hang on, how does that trade off against the lens' speed/ISO's work? I had pretty much stumbled blindly to the same overall conclusion as Gordon spelled out re being prepared to buy extra (expensive) lenses with the GX800 but now I can quantify the rationale. And I guessed in advance that Gordon was from Brighton when he did an impression of a bird (bloody gulls) going for the pizza!

Great video👍🏻. I'm looking to buy a camera. I have been looking at mirrorless cameras. So far I have looked at the one in the video and the Nikon 1 J5. I'm looking for one with that old style look to it, the only flaw is that I'd rather they had a VF. Are there any other ones on the market the same style with a VF? I don't want to spend too much as I mainly use a Nikon D3300 and I'm just looking for something a little easier to have with me whilst out and about.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
There's lots of mirrorless cameras with viewfinders, but they'll be larger than those without and more expensive too. I'd recommend them, but they'd really replace your Nikon, not complement it. Maybe you should be considering a high-end compact camera with a viewfinder, like a Sony RX100 III? Have a look at my buyer's guides to get some ideas: www.cameralabs.com/best-mirrorless/

@cenfy57
@cenfy57 6 лет назад
Gordon, you state that there is no advantage to the 4/3 sensor if you just keep the kit lens and that the Lumix LX 10/15 might be better choice due to its brighter lens. But your review as well reviews by others all point out that the LX 10 has significant amount of cropping as soon you use even small amount of zoom and even when shooting just 1080 video. Is it the case that the GX850 wouldn't crop as much as the LX 10 ? Thank You.

Hi Gordon and Doug - I'm so close to pulling the trigger on this camera, but another RU-vid video talking about this camera noted that you couldn't set the shutter speed and aperture at the same time in video mode - is that true? I'm not as concerned about aperture as I am about shutter speed, because I want to take advantage of all the 4K photo modes and want to make sure I can get the shutter speed fast enough to freeze the action. Also, it seems like the US gets an all black version, while the rest of us have to settle with the silver with black/orange/pink accents only
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
Shooting 4K Photo is different to shooting 4K video. The 4K Photo modes let you shoot in P, A, S or M, so you have full control over exposure. The only caveat is a minimum shutter speed to allow the video frame rate.

@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
Hi Matthew, I'd only go for an interchangeable lens camera if you genuinely intend to swap lenses at some point in the future. Otherwise you'll essentially be able to match their performance with a smaller 1in class compact with their brighter lenses, like the RX100 series. If you want all the 4k Photo features and can live without an EVF, the Lumix LX10 / LX15 is another good option. The Lumix GX800 / GX850 kit zoom is ok, but again you're really paying for and carrying around a camera that's designed to take different lenses at some point. Have a great trip! PS - if you're shopping at Amazon, B&H or Adorama, please do click through to them via my review links to support my work, thanks!

T6 compelling?! Hell no. No sensor cleaning only 3 fps and an 8 year old piece of garbage sensor. D3300 sure. D3400/T6 hell no. The Rx100 mk2 is a F1.8-4.9. So it doesn't have the benefit over the Gx800. Gordon you have done one of the best lens comparisons of these models. (with the Canon G7x (mk2) lens. Which is still quote quiet often to show that the longer lens of the Canon comes at a price at the wide-end. Still you can get a G7x (slow one) for this money. Which if you only shoot Jpeg(it's too damn slow in raw) is pretty compelling. If you want flexibility ILC's win. Agree with that conclusion. Especially with the Panasonic 42.5mm F1.7 OIS. Think about skaters that get access to the genuinely brilliant 7.5mm Samyang. Unfortunately 4k isn't that adviseable given the crop. But having something this small light and powerful sure has it's merit. Heck you might even be able to tape it under a drone. with that lens (albeit recording blind)
