Panasonic Toughbook Smackdown! The CF29 VS CF30 Two Maxed Out Old School Laptops Go Head To Head.

With recent interest in the station as well as the website, I decided it was time to upgrade from my VERY old Panasonic CF29MK5 (Pentium-III 1.6ghz) to a Panasonic CF30MK3 (Core 2 Duo 1.66ghz). These are ancient by today's standards, but they work great for the tasks I need them to preform.
The CF30 is now all setup and is exceeding expectations. Larger, faster hard drive, double the ram, and 2 cores to crunch numbers.
Why share this? Why not! There are too many people that think they need the latest and greatest to get simple tasks done online. That is not the case, and these little Toughbooks prove it everyday. The CF29 is now off the mountain running a station, and stream in Winston Salem!

Good morning Erik and The Farm Family ! I remember these computers all too well !! I had both in my State Patrol Cruiser for years, one was horrible , the other was slightly less psychotic, but in a nutshell , they worked for basic things we used them for . I mostly used mine to download Steve Earle tunes while hi speed driving chasing down idiots, and often play the passenger in the back seat his remake of “My Old Friend The Blues” while on the way to the County Bed n Breakfast after a DUI stop 😂😂. But seriously , I’d still like to have one for basic use . They are tough !

When using a computer this old, Linux should be a priority. If you want an ultralight distro antiX only uses ~150 Mb of ram at idle. I can actually run Firefox on an old laptop with ~835 Mb of ram. If antiX isn’t very user friendly, you could try Mint XFCE, which is very easy if you’re used to windows, but, it uses ~550 Mb of ram at idle. I recommend getting away from windows 7 if you use the internet; as Microsoft has ended support.

I just found a CF 27 by a dumpster yesterday that looks like it had been sitting outside a while. I cleaned it up as best I can this morning. But the screen is not cracked and all the keys are there. What type of Cable do I need to hook it up to a AC? (Of course I should air dry it first)

Now they are way more affordable then when they were new. I wanted one so bad when they first came out until I saw the price tag.

@@FarpointFarms I just went to look for a new one, and it's "request a quote from these dealers" ... if they can't give a base price, they're WAYYY costly. Back in the day, they were about 4 grand for one with way less hardware than you could get for just under a grand for a "regular" laptop. Substandard processor / memory / everything .. but a bad to the bone magnesium case! As small, cheap, and low power as hardware is now, I wonder if I could gut a modern laptop and stuff it into an older toughbook case ...

Those things are the M1 Abrahms of laptops. I watched guys pretty close to throw them on the ground. I don't know any other machines that could take that and survive - much less come out unscathed. Wiped off the dirt, and went back to work!

Hey Eric you could make those toughbooks screaming fast with Linux. Mint Linux 20 has a 32bit and 64bit available, both blow any windows out of the water, I refurbish many old laptops and desktops on Linux. Actually all my computers in my house and church are on Linux.

The issue there is that I use these with vintage dos and windows software so Andriod would kill that use.

I've buyed a cf-29 in a good condition, but it arrived without the hdd caddy. They are pretty expensive where i live. Is there an alternative? Like 3d printing the caddy and buying the connection cable cheap? So far i can see the caddies are supposed to work with IDE hdds. Is there a way to work with sata hdds or even ssd? Cheap alternatives? Are the caddies from the cf-19 and cf-29 compatible?

The caddy is rare as many companies just pulled them and tossed them when sending them off for disposal. it is a PATA drive, and is hard to come by.
