Unfortunately, it won't allow you to manipulate the image of non-anamorphic DVDs so there's no way to get them up to the correct aspect ratio. It also won't allow auto stretch for 4:3 SD content, so you're stuck with watching full screen material with pillarboxing.

@@LEMON48 I don't think I'll ever own something as large as 83 inches, but on my 65" Samsung LCD, DVDs look surprisingly good, depending on how they were mastered. Some discs play back with artifacts like moire and aliasing, but the bigger problem is the way the players from Panasonic won't allow custom manipulation of the SD image for non-anamorphic and full screen discs. Do DVDs really look that poor on your very large OLED?

An investment that I'm more than satisfied with. I purchased my UB9000 in 2019 and I haven't had any issues with it. I bought it solely for it's top rated performance specs and nothing else. In that category they deserve an A+ rating. Although Panasonic does flaunt this as a streaming platform I never had the intention to use it as one. I will admit though that they could have (more appropriately, should have) done a much better job than the sloppy and mediocre one they included.

On sale for in the UK for 1K - i expect perfection and would hope at that price there was no skipping and the build quality is up to scratch - also (like most products) is made in China. I don't like the look and feel of the app store though guess you wouldn't buy this player primarily for that. I like Panasonic and given the choice, would get the DP-UB820-K

I use the UB9000 with a 42-inch Sony A90K OLED. To avoid the soap opera effect on movies, ensure your TV has motion smoothing turned off and use the ‘Cinema’ display option. This with make the image look slightly darker, so turn off the TV’s ambient light sensor and it will then look brighter.

I applaud you for reviewing the unit but your review kind shit the bed my friend. You didn't even mention the incredible performance the 9000 puts on. The audio coming from this unit is sensational. If you have a good audio system, this player will push it to it's max. It sounds amazing over the analog outs as well, by-passing your receiver and going straight to your amplifier. The 9000's video is a small step up from the 820's FYI. But the 9000 monsters the 820 in the audio dept. with thunderous, crisp sound. It is a much nicer ownership experience as well. I just plugged in my old Sony 800xm2. It looks good, it sounds decent. And if 200 or so is your budget, it's the one to get. But the 9000 is actually a great value especially compared to Revon and Magnetar models, which lack the Panasonics video processing chops.
@b-icemedia
@b-icemedia Месяц назад
I appreciate your feedback! I couldn't personally tell a difference between the UB820 vs UB9000 in terms of picture quality, but I do know audio quality it is superior, especially with music. I'll talk about this topic more in an upcoming video, but it's been a debate and topic of discussion for quite a while! haha

Just wanted to share my 2¢'s worth. As far as disc playback features go, the 820 offers the same premium performance as the 9000. If money is a bit of an issue, you can't go wrong in choosing this model. If money isn't an issue then I'd highly recommend getting the 9000. Home Theater is a serious hobby of mine so I'm willing to spend the extra buck in order to get that high-end premium look with a performance to match.

I would go w the UB820. Save the money for something else
@bearclaw5115
@bearclaw5115 Месяц назад
I've had both and the 820 does not compare. The video is not quite to the same standard as the 9000 but the audio is really where the 9000 pulls ahead. The sound over hdmi on the 820 sounds much softer and weaker than playing from the 9000. If you play sound from your tv speakers go 820. If you have an audio system definitely go 9000!
@b-icemedia
@b-icemedia Месяц назад
I actually addressed this in the conclusion of the video, but I went with the UB820 because I didn't want to pay an extra $400-$500 to say I owned the flagship model. If money is no issue, then I would go UB9000, hands-down.

With reference to your review: firstly, the remotes glossy finish is likely to show every single fingerprint that you put on it. The backlight looks like it has to be activated by a button and not motion? And apart from the top inch of the remote, the rest of it is almost a carbon copy of an Oppo 203/205 remote. I don't know of any THX certified 4K Blu-ray discs and DTS X and Dolby Vision make it largely redundant as a standard and sound format - licence money that could have been used better elsewhere leading me nicely to the next issue... As far as I can tell it doesn't offer SACD playback? - so not a universal disc player. If you are going to spend vast amount of money on a high-end 4K Blu-ray player the chances are you already have a high-end screen with all the apps built in, so you wouldn't really need them in this player? There are two brands that make higher end machines than this but at least one of them doesn't even offer wireless network connection so in many respects, as expensive as you think this machine is, it's not as bad as spending three times that amount and finding you have to plug in an ethernet cable 😫
@b-icemedia
@b-icemedia Месяц назад
The remote actually has more of a metallic, matte finish to it, so I haven't had any issues with fingerprint buildup. And yes, the light is activated by the bottom left "light" button, but it's placed well, so it's easy to find. I've noticed all of the top 4K players (Panasonic, Reavon, Magnetar) rip off the Oppo's quite a bit, lol. The THX certification is basically meaning the machine itself will playback audio and video at studio mastered quality. Although, I do think it's more of a fancy licensing more than anything. And as I mentioned in the video, no SACD, but I don't think it claims to be a universal player though either. I agree that most people will have a smart TV to playback streaming, but it's still crappy to boast of streaming capability and then offer the terrible setup and app store that it does. It's just not a good luck, and they really should have just killed streaming with these players in general.
@IncognitoChild
@IncognitoChild Месяц назад
@@b-icemedia I don't really consider your Panasonic @ $1k to be that expensive for a 4k Blu-ray player, but there is a perception amongst the majority of people who expect value for money. It just depends on whether or not you feel streaming is as or more important than having a machine which is capable of playing any disc you throw at it. I do happen to agree with you that you either go all in or not bother. Oppo's view was they didn't want to be responsible for supporting apps on their machine when they could better utilise their costs on higher quality components and finish. In the 7 years since Oppos decision to leave the market and concentrate on mobile phones (more profit) no one has really added any new features or moved the format forward. I think I read somewhere that the Panasonic is capable of independently being able to adjust the brightness of subtitles, which for those who need it is a great idea 👍😎

It has a horrible interface. It does not support Hulu and many other popular streaming services. I hate that when you change between Amazon Prime and Netflix you have to manually adjust the screen size from 16:9 to CUSTOM other wise the Netflix will be slightly zoomed. It's barely noticeable but if you look closely you can see the border change from letterbox to full screen. Also, it does not output analog audio and digital simultaneously. You must pick an output and stick with it. Also, it has an awesome remote but it can only be paired with other Panasonic devices. No big deal except Panasonic pulled out of the US market the same year I purchased this device. I purchased it mainly because I was going to get a Panasonic 4K HDTV at a later date. Panasonic screwed the US consumers. It's built like a tank and that is the only positive thing I can say about it. It plays 4K blurays well but that is all it's good for. Any sub $100 bluray player is better. I was a Panasonic loyal customer for over 30 years. F*CK Panasonic!
@b-icemedia
@b-icemedia Месяц назад
Agreed, the interface looks terrible on such an expensive player. I never noticed the screen size change! I only used Netflix once or twice a while ago, but I hated how slow it was and never used it again. And yes, that's true on the remote, but that's usually how most OEM remotes are in general, so it's not surprising. Newer TV software and universal remotes are the exception.

The UB9000 is unsurpassed for picture, audio and build quality. Why would you want to use it as a streaming platform, or for any other reason than Bluray/DVD and HD audio, when your TV does all of that? The reason Panasonic have terribly outdated platform is their focus on playback quality, which is second to none. I have 2 of these, the first I bought in 2014 and the latest in 2021 when the updated version (P1K-updated ESS Sabre DACS) was released. Both have performed without issue or glitches of any kind for thousands of hours of playback. They are only used for Bluray/UHDBluray and audio.
