Pancha Kosha - Five Sheaths that CANNOT Cover Atma

The five koshas - food, prana, mind, intellect, and bliss - cannot cover atma because atma pervades the universe. Understood according to the non-dual teachings of advaita Vedanta, such as those taught by Shankara, each kosha is a locus of identification, ignorance, and wrong conclusions about atma, the true self, sat chit ananda, limitless eternal consciousness.
annamaya kosha = body anna = food
pranamaya kosha = physiological energy prana = life force
manomaya kosha = mind manas = mind
vijnanamaya kosha = intellect vijnana or buddhi = intellect
anandamaya kosha = bliss
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

Swamiji, thank you! As always, I quote the words of my guru, the blessed teacher of the whole world and humanity, Sri Ramana Maharshi: Visitor. Are the shells [koshas] material and are they different from the Atman? Maharshi. There is no difference between Spirit and matter. Modern science agrees that all matter is Energy. And Energy is power, or force [shakti]. Therefore, everything is dissolved in Shiva and Shakti, i.e., in the Atman and in the Mind. Koshas are just an appearance. In them, as such, there is no reality. The Highest Being is that from which this body is born, in which it lives and in which it dissolves. However, we think that we are within the body. Therefore, instruction is given: "Look inside." OM TAT SAT

"There is no difference between Spirit and matter" Since Shiva and Shakthi always exist together for the perpetual duality cycles to happen does not mean Shiva = Shakhti. Shiva is athman or brahman and by itself it cannot be wetted by water, dried by air, cut by a knife and burnt by fire.

14:08 - "In deep sleep, ..., only Anandamaya kosha (Bliss Sheath) is experienced" - Swami, since in the deep sleep state, - the mental activities, the feeling of "I" (ego) and the perception of time - all are absent, is it not true that nothing can be experienced? May be the blissful state is experienced by recalling it when we become awake? Did I understand your language (choice of words) wrong?

You in one of ur videos had explained that the consciousness which you in other words u said is the Atman, is one n its the sukshma sharir that keeps taking rebirth. The consciousness gains experience thru the sukshma sarira. If that is true, why does the consciousness keeps taking different forms to gain the same kind of experience. Once it experiences something, that should be the end. But it is taking different forms to experience the same thing from thousands of years. Doesn't it get bored.

There is no enlightened being. When a person reaches enlightenment it is clear that there is no enlightenment possible, never. There is NO person existing. When you see that the person that you think you are is just a thought and nothing more, that it is seen that there is nobody to be enlightened. What is referred to as enlightenment is the "death" of the ego. But, because there was never any ego, but just an appearance of it, it is seen that you never left your essence.

Close your eyes and feel your hand. What do you feel? It is an energy, a sensation. A thought appears in consciousness referring to this sensetion as hand. In the pure sensation there is no information existing of a hand. Now, who or what feels the sensation that our thinking mind calls hand? The normal answear would be "me" "exstazius". (I use my name) But what is this "me"? Normally we would say "this body, feelings, values, memories, emotions etc. This makes the person that I am". But all this things, are also always and only BEING PERCEIVED as the sensation of the hand. Who or what perceives? It is awereness, consciousness, God, Brahman, nature... There are different names. This is your essence.

This is the problem ,Guruji. Layers have to be removed and some idiot will see it as removing . What it means by removing the layers ? Remove you're arrogance and you're ignorance,that you are just body. Identify you're true self and true Nature. Who am I in reality ? When you realise that you are pure joyful light , conciousness ,then you remove this layer. This is why it said when Veda Roars as lion all philosophy just hide and there. Earliest and most profound description of ,Who we are true ? Everyone else is just modifying and explaining the same idea as in simulation bla bla.

Pranaam, some questions/observations seeking clarifications 1- Kosha is not a sheath or layer, it means a gathering or accumulation. therefore annamaya kosha would not translate to food sheath, but rather 'body created by food', and similarly the rest adds to the human body (all sharira combined) 2- there is no relation of kosha and state of sleep, all koshas are always present. in deep sleep the focus is actually gone into repairing the body, creating muscles etc... the major bodybuilding and body repairing happens during deep sleep... and only if you are consciously focusing on something that the external world, body, senses(pratyahar) doesn't register in your focus... and ofcourse technically in samadhi, nothing exists... but its not applicable that koshas disappears without meditation with effort of ignoring them and focusing on something or nothing. kindly correct me humbly

Maya is NOT an illusion through which Brahman falsely appears as the universe. Maya is the creative shakthi of Brahman and it is absolutely real. So, the material realm is also very real. Mithya also does not mean false. It means temporary or relative world just like temporary tasks in an office which are not false and they have to be completed. The subject/object split may be temporary but it does not mean there is no subject and object. Point is Advaitha (non dual shiva) is INCOMPLETE without Dvaitha (dual shakhti). This is Sankhya Vedic metaphysics.

@anandagiri2928
@anandagiri2928 Год назад
As the Soul is divine matter already encased in anandamaya and to experience this material world, it donned the Vignanamaya kosha at Devi Loka when it's limitless multi dimensional vision got cut by half! At Chaturmukh Brahma Loka another kosha called Manomaya further reduced the Soul's vision severely. Catching the rain drop the Soul enters only male physical bodies on Earth and it takes nearly 9 months for annamaya kosha to be formed! At birth, Pranamaya Kosha is added with it's first cry! Till then the Soul, is supposed to stay near developing annamaya and enter into it along with Prana. These 5 sheaths are essential for the Soul to experience this material cosmos as explained by my Master Late Shri Ambarisha Varma (1919-1982). He said earlier there was a 2 way channel for the Soul to send out and receive experiences, this channel should be opened during Sadhana, so that the Soul can take charge of Body, Mind and Intellect. Now, the Ego is in charge. The koshas are like an astronaut's suit, how can they cause pain and suffering- with or without identification of the manomaya? Regards to all

So there is a problem I have remaining it was my understanding of all of this that which I am truly is that which knows. That which knows or that which is aware, is not what it is aware of, (in the dualistic understanding). The point being your head hurts, not you, BUT you or not, you must remain fully aware of the pain. Knowing you are not your head, doesn’t take away the pain you are forced to experience. In other worlds realizing you are the awareness does nothing to stop the experience of the pain. If I think I am my body or if I think I am awareness doesn’t matter I experience the same pain. So where is the Benefit?

Where does responsibility fit into this understanding of our true nature? We do have a physical body, liable to get sick, to grow old, etc.; do we not have a responsibility to tend it, nurture it? If we don’t identify with our body, we say I am not my body, therefore it’s ailments are not my problem; I am not my mind, therefore it’s suffering is not my problem, etc. Why do we incarnate, have a body, are endowed with the fruits of karma?

The message of Advaita Vedanta is that the pure, eternal, infinite, immortal Spirit, the Atman, manifests itself through various forms, the highest of which is human. The Atman manifests life and being through the body in a natural way, but when the body is sufficiently developed physically and intellectually, the consciousness manifested in it forgets its source, its true nature of the pure Spirit, and begins to consider itself a separate, independent organism, that is a physical body. This is the first and last and most terrible sin, which in essence does all the evil of this world. Since the isolated limited creature, as a person considers himself, is constantly offended or oppressed by other evil people and many hostile factors constantly attack him, and he defends himself in all possible ways. Only the highest reality has its own, unchanging, independent nature, and the Atman is like that. A man in his aspect of the body of food and mind, nama-rupa, is simply a fiction, a set of habits, concepts and repetitive actions, a constant fragment in time, life shakes him like a leaf in the wind, he goes without a path, suffering and moaning. To realize, remember and stay in your true Self, pure Spirit, Atman, this is the bliss of bliss, eternal freedom, true realization, the highest Love of merging in the Spirit. Always remember: You are THAT. OM TAT SAT

I would like to suggest thinking of the body as a possession rather than the self. That does not relinquish the responsibility to take care of the body. E.g. These five koshas are bridges to one another and they nourish each other, if the access is correctly ordered. But for the regular human after the Annamaya kosha does not give the accsess to Pranamaya kosha, but to Manomaya kosha. Its not the full awareness what exactly Manomaya kosha is, but only the daily, superficial understanding, that man has body and mind (like the classical cartesian duality of body and mind, that stucks to European philosophy until now). When someone starts to meditate after a bit experience with it, the intuition gets sharper. When someone realizes, that with the sharper intuition, the awarenes broadens about what the body wants to eat and what the emotion wants to express - so the intelligence of the body and the intelligence of the mind gets apparent to that person. After that it gets clear to this person, that the energies of the body also follow this intelligence of organizing the balance and health of the body and the mind - the organs, the immune system, the psychological health, the neurological health etc. Only by this insight through the broadened intuition, the existence of the Pranamaya kosha becomes plausible and so its function as a bridge between body and mind makes sence. This energy guides you in meditation in to controlled, deeper states - without its frustratingly hard to get in deeper meditation and even stay in it. After realizing this, the classical order of the Panchakosha serves as bridge between the conscious and the unconscious. Without this realization we stuck in the superficial duality.

In their essence they are nothing but Atman .Mantra 7-25 -2 of Chandogya Upanishad declares thus: AtmaivEdagM sarvam || Sri Shankara writes | AtmA sarvagatatvAt sarvAnanyatvAcca || Then where are the koshas?

Restful contentment isnt lucid dreaming. Puzzlement is better than frustration, fearfulness better than insanity/hallucination, manipulations from abstinent shame, and religious morality quells starvation.

This is very good. I am experiencing difficulty in remaining in the constant thought that I am just a witness. Do you have any videos on improving this please

just as we can over identify with our roles, i think we can under identify with them as well, resulting in abandonment of dharma.
