Pancreatic cysts are increasingly identified during the course of medical evaluation for a variety of conditions because of improved resolution and increased use of computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen. These cysts are common and relevant because many of them have potential to become cancer. However, potential and realization are very different and most of these do not progress to cancer where it really matters. The challenge, however, is that we don’t quite know which ones need to be followed and which ones we can ignore. In this session, we will review what is known and unknown and questions and concerns on this topic will be discussed.
Presenter:
Walter G. Park, MD, MS, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, and Medical Director of the Benign Pancreas Program within Stanford Health Care.

Hi Lisa - thanks for your question! For any procedural questions, we would recommend reaching out to a medical professional. For pancreatic diseases, a great place to start would be one of our NPF Centers of Excellence - you can search for one in your area online here: pancreasfoundation.org/patient-resources/npf-centers-of-excellence/

I am not a health professional, but I do have a Pancreatic Cyst. With the sample taken from the cyst. Why can’t the cyst just be drained as it sits on the Pancreas?? If drained, will the cyst return once drained??

That's actually a fantastic question. I would definitely encourage you to ask your health professional to clarify any procedural-based questions. I also found a great article from John Hopkins about pancreatic cysts. Check it out! www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/pancreatic-pseudocysts

Question I was diagnosed with having two small cyst in the pancreas and the report says: At the pancreatic body there was evidence of 9.3 anechoic cystic lesion without intramural nodule, wall thickening or clear communication with the pancreatic duct. At the tail of the pancreas there was evidence of 4.9 mm anechoic cystic lesion without high risk features or worrisome features. However when I look up “Anechoic” means somewhat of Pseudocyst . My brother pass 3 years ago from pancreatic cancer. If you can provide the understanding of the findings that I pasted. I have a medical doctor yet it’s good to get other feedback. Thank you

Any cystic lesion under 30 mm (3 cm) can safely by kept under surveillance ie serial imaging ( US or MR ) every year or less frequently.
