The panel aims at identifying lasting priorities and blind spots in the Czech and European policies of development cooperation in North African and Sahelian countries. It will build on several case studies zooming in on different countries of the region. The last years
witnessed an increased European and Czech interest in partnerships and diverse forms of assistance with a range of countries in North Africa and the Sahel. Driven by concerns
about migration, security and instability, both traditional and new European partners of these countries have been involved in projects ranging from support for local livelihoods and economic development to security system reform and capacity building. While some European countries have been involved in these regions for decades, others, including the Czech Republic, have been stepping up their engagement only recently and rely on
their experience from different contexts in the process. The panel will thus bring together speakers from different countries and organisations to answer the following questions: How do different national and organisational experiences translate into development programmes performed on the ground? How can we identify the most salient blind spots and potentially improve development policies in North Africa and the Sahel based on these different experiences? What are the main urgent needs on the ground that the development and humanitarian cooperation is not reacting to?
