In this video I upgrade an original 150 AMP panel to a 200 AMP panel by Square D QO. After the panel upgrade I installed a new 50-AMP GFCI-protected circuit for a new electric vehicle charger. I hope you enjoy this video and if you do please like & subscribe. Thank you.

Great video Ron. 1. Please don’t turn up the music too loud. It’s a little distracting. 2. I know the 4 square raised crush cover probably bonds the 14-50 receptacle, but you wouldn’t rather have a direct EGC connection to the receptacle? 3. A torque screwdriver is a must nowadays. There isn’t just a danger in undertorquing, but also in overtorquing. I went to a trade show once where the Leviton booth had electricians compare what they thought was a good torque to what a calibrated torque driver had and they were all over the place. 4. Any reason to not use plug on neutral panels now to at least provide the option to use GFCI or AFCI circuit breakers? Cutting the neutrals short to the ground/neutral bus bar prevents using GFCI or AFCI circuit breakers in the future because they are too short.

It's interesting how installations can be different depending on the location . The exposed Romex going into the panel would need to be covered up here in socal . Usually done with a bit of framing and drywall but of course a gutter would be allowed . Also being so dry in my area I usually run emt for exposed locations . It's funny how the code is interpreted depending where you are . Nice work . Very efficient .
@aaron74
@aaron74 Год назад
Really, no exposed Romex whatsoever, huh? That's usually the rule of Romex in general (no surface mounting of it), but it seems entry into a surface-mounted panel is a sort of exception every place I've seen it.
@stevencole7331
@stevencole7331 Год назад
@@aaron74 Things like attics ok even though crawling in one you can walk and crawl over them on a regular bases . I believe drop down tbar ceilings are not allowed . The term in the code subject to damage is quite vague to interpretation and it seems a specific location rights it's own interpretation of the code .
@aaron74
@aaron74 Год назад
@@stevencole7331 I've always just imagined that Romex can only run in spaces that can (but not necessarily will) be covered by drywall. So it can go in stud and joist bays or truss webs.

No harm no foul in the USA; we don't insulate or sleeve ground (earth) like you guys in the UK do. An insulated ground conductor is more of an exception than the rule here. So it doesn't matter if the insulation were abraded by a sharp knockout!

The GEC is different from the grounded neutral.
@edwinlandy
@edwinlandy Год назад
@@electricalron might be over thinking it, but I was thinking that there is always a little current making it's way back to the transformer through ground (PoCo connects the primary and secondary system winding neutrals to ground) , and since the neutral is bonded to the service equipment enclosure, this current would need to travel through the enclosure from the neutral to make it's way back.

I have a quick question: I need to run an overhead line from the house to the garage for general stuff - it's about 80 feet. Exactly what wire should I use to do this (I heard something about XHHW-10-7STR-CU)? Isn't there a single "Romex-type" 12-2 or something that will work without running three separate wires? Seems odd a 2012-built house wouldn't have already had a 200A panel. That looked like a pretty straightforward upgrade being really close to the meter and the van. Those $100 Hubbell/Bryant 9450 receptacles are kind of snake oil in my opinion. They do have very good terminations on the back of them where you use an Allen wrench to tighten the lugs, and they might have more metal contact with the plug inside. But my question is how often do EV owners plug/unplug their charger from the receptacle? You plug it in and forget about it unless or until you need to replace the charger.

@@Ampacityelectric The following Munro Live video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tDp9PhPJhUI.html ) had some electricians review some 14-50 receptacle failures for EVs. I'd be concerned about using a receptacle that was designed a decade or 2 ago for a range and then have it be used for an EV - which may be under full load for several hours. Especially in a garage you typically won't stay there when the device is in use - even worse you may often be asleep. The best solution would be to hardwire EV charges and avoid the receptacle completely.

"the gfci's from pass & seymour, I've always seemed to have a bad experience with them". funny you say that, because I recently had a new GFCI, that's stuck on, it won't trip with test button, tester or other means of ground faulting. the light says it's in working order and it's passing power through out the load terminals also. it's a "Legrand" brand. also within the last year, I've had numerous others with random issues, some wouldn't reset, some the LED's do nothing regardless of state, some test buttons didn't work, but a tester would trip them. just a mixed bag of trash, from all brands. how do we trust any of them to actually work if needed? not like we have lab grade test rigs with us. 🤬💩
