"Be who you are rather than what the world wants you to be," Pankaj Kapur on why his art matters so fiercely, and how he has made life and love bend to his will, with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra, The Arts & Ideas Club, Gurugram on 24 March 2018.
Pankaj Kapur, arguably, the only actor of our time who has made virtually no concessions to commercial considerations - creating a body of work that is, each, an exemplar of great art, from Mandi; Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron; Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho to Raakh; Ek Doctor Ki Maut to Maqbool.
He worked in television when it was unfashionable and on the stage when it was unlucrative. He charted a cinematic trajectory of meaning, not reward. Some of his most memorable characters on television were in TV serials like Karamchand, Office Office and Zabaan Sambhalke.
He has won two national awards for acting so far. He is, of course, the father of actor Shahid Kapur.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.
Membership to Algebra is by invitation or referral. If you know an Algebra member, ask them to put you in touch with us.

One of the very few actors who does not have a particular style while acting(Most actors do have a style, they cannot help it, it’s natural) that’s why we never see anyone doing Pankaj Kapoor mimicry

In Neem ka Ped, he was just outstandingly phenomenal ( too good to be true) & looked as if he was "Budhiya" in his real life as well, the protagonist of the show!! His range as an actor is as good as it gets which is evident by his performances from Budhiya to Musaddi Lal, Abba ji to Karam Chand which are just diametrically opposite to one another yet each one of them were as real and believable as possible. He is one of India's best actor of all times; yet he is extremely underrated and hardly gets recognized and given enough credit for his wizardry over his craft!! A legendary actor, a jewel in India's acting history!! I hope and wish as an admirer and as a cinephile he continues to act as long as possible.

Pankaj Kapur is an exceptional talent and one of the best actors in our country.I was I looking forward to the interview. But, I stopped it the moment he commented on the south Indian film makers.Hope he understands that every craft is a reflection of it's society and cinema is one of them.Bollywood has always reflected what the 'north' audiences wanted. It was never content driven, but stars and glamour driven. On the other hand, South Indian movies were and are extremely content and quality driven. The era that Pankaj Kapur referred is one of the golden eras of Indian cinema because of South Indian movies and it has evolved over the years to the extend that it is appreciated by movie makers around the world.Bollywood would take ages to reach that position. It is extremely silly for a person of his stature to comment something as meaningless as 'South Indian directors' and 'South Indian movies' contributed to the so called, colorful, offtrack Hindi media-TV or cinema.I have watched 'Doordarshan' from the time I can remember and the foundation of my Hindi diction and understanding of the language was laid through watching programs on the channel.I used look forward to watching you as 'Karamchand' like other soaps that you mentioned.I am from Kerala and never had the pre notion of the channel or programme being in Hindi, but was attracted to quality of the content and the performance of the actors.

I love Algebra, but I wonder why they cannot afford a decent sound system and good lighting. Can somebody from Algebra bother to answer that?

@@RajeshKumar-kj6pw , I get your point, but aren't other youtube channels free as well! It doesn't stop them from having a decent sound system and lighting, I am not talking about Hollywood production quality here, just some basic stuff. BTW, I don't use youtube for free I am a paid RU-vid Premium user but that is besides the point.

Madam, to praise a man in his absence is a v.good thing, but in the presence of the person,it’s equal to throwing stones at him. But I am happy that his very first words in the first santence, was a blow on you Madam, he throw back all stones at you.( which only people of wisdom understand & not people of information and knowledge like you)

Algebra is great, but they can do with a better host. She is not great at engaging people with empathy. There is an unnecessary edge to her. Even her audience work is not good. Wish they get a better host

Kya har Hindustani Angrezi jaanta hai? Agar nahi tou ye kis audience kay liye hai? Kya jo Hindi jaantey ya samajhtey hai wo aapke guest ko nahi jaantey? En artists ko adhiktar Hindi bhashi hi banatey hai fir unka bahishkar kyu? Don't you feel SHAME?
