Now that we have three different panning modes in Studio One, how (and when) should you use them?

Thanks Joe! You have given me the fabled 15 milliseconds of fame. This was a much needed explanation of a complex topic. Good job, as usual!

Studio One has the real nice Reverb Open Air, which works with Impulse Responses. And with the IR maker you can make your own. An extended tutorial about it and its creative possibilities would be nice, because it is very strong for many many purposes, also very creative. You have so many possibilities like hardware, to make other reverbs more flexible, you can also make IRs from field recordings or you voice a.s.o.

Hugely helpful Joe. Thanks... I Never understood the differences either so you have finally made it make sense.

One thing to be aware of as well. If you have an uneven stereo track and you are trying to rebalance the output of the track you will notice that using the Studio One panner doesn't alter the track balance. That happens because the pan control is AFTER the channel fader. If your stereo track goes to a bus then you will see your pan movements reflected in the bus

So we still have to create two channels for true balance of L/R. What we wanted has been in a lot of DAWs for years real stereo L/R channel panning. The new options are mostly for width adjustment. We still have to create two channels as you do in the video to pan hard L/R. This crazy considering all the mix/mastering tools implemented in Studio One.

Studio One NEEDS proper midi tracks and midi mixer faders! Proper external instruments patch scripts support like Cubase, Cakewalk etc. Listen bus NEEDS to be global like Cubases Control Room instead tied to each song. Needs more Note FX plugins (seems like no third party developers are interested in it) Everything else is great so far P.S. Feature requeat firum is crap, Presonus should pay attention to wider audience rather than bunch if their fanboys

In this day of spatial audio, can you properly rename binaural pan to something like utility panner?
@TheJonHolstein
@TheJonHolstein Год назад
Yes and introduce a headphone panner tool, that includes bass cross-over (as our hearing hears low end in mono, so panning it, makes the sound unnatural, which can be an effect, but should never be default behaviour, and bass cross-over also help making it vinyl compatible, for those that for some reason want to print vinyls... personally, I would prefer they put a USB-stick or a memory-card inside a larger sleeve design, so that the buyer gets a high quality copy, but with the large artwork, if they want that, that is not only better in terms of sound quality it also is better for the environment, although shipping large sleeves do take up extra shipping space, so hardly optimal). And there should be a panning option with separate level controls for each side, instead of having to fiddle with the end points.

Good video but tracks 15 and 16 appear to be stereo tracks hard-panned using the "Balanced" setting, meaning (as demonstrated by the Bus-test at ~4:00) that only one side of each stereo track is actually playing into the bus channel. As such, using "Dual" or "Binaural" on the bus you aren't getting the full full track as it was recorded. It would be interesting to see each track hard-panned in Dual mode to retain its full stereo-like sound as it's panned in the bus. Also in Dual, in addition to clicking the edges or inputting a percentage, I believe (not in the studio) you can click the center and just drag up/down to change the panning. As for the red panning that showed up, isn't that just a reverse panning?

I guess you could narrow the stereo field created by your two guitars in Dual mode and use automation to widen it out for the choruses. I'll have to give it a try.

Great video. The recent release notes for Studio one says that the Faderport 8 and 16 now support the new pan features. When will Universal Control be updated to take advantage of this directly from the Faderport?

Have a question...I have two bass tracks that are "hooked" together...meaning, raise one fader,,,the other one does same...same as pan, and solo and mute. No idea how to turn this off...HELP!

I typically record three tracks for my guitars and put on a single bus. Sometimes I may want my guitar verse tracks to be panned 40% left and right. If I have two tracks panned 40% left and right and the third track centered....would I set the Bus as Dual with 40% left and right? Or do I leave the two guitar tracks panned 100% left and right (third track still centered)...and set Bus as 40% left and right Dual?
@drefue
@drefue Год назад
My understanding is that balance mode attenuates either left or right and dual mode shifts the stereo image. This would be similar to what ProTools and Logic offers on their stereo panners. Yes?

Brilliantly clear video, thanks Joe. Is it the Haas effect that causes a >100% binaural width setting to give the impression of 'superwidth'? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZW1QRu4TIPk.html . Also, a question: in what situations would you pan hard left or right? I always understood that hard panning was to be avoided, and I rarely go over 65-70%, but I'm guessing if you're doing it, there are occasions when it works.

Stereo channels 15 and 16 are hard left and right, but vertical blu line doesn't display this. Also blu line shows wrong Db value. Why Presonus doesn't fix this. This is old bug))). Because of this I am still using binaural pan plugin)))

Joe. I changed all of the tracks to different pan style, binaraul, in one of my tracks. Now, by default it is always binaraul for every new song I create. How can I make balance the default again? Thank you

It would be nice if Presonus would tell us how the binaural panner work. If it works with phases or with another technique.

Thanks Joe! Great explanation of a great new feature. But I guess, Presonus forgot about their hardware consoles. How do you control these new panning modes using, say, a Faderport 16? I was hoping for either a firmware or other kind of software upgrade addressing this, but nothing has happened yet.
@stupidusername38
@stupidusername38 Год назад
There has been a firmware update in the latest universal control but I'm not sure what the update did
@stupidusername38

Just worked it out. Press Pan on the Faderport. This first mode puts the faders in control of the panning but press Pan again whilst either in Dual or Binaural mode and you can use the faders on the Faderport to pan left right or pan and width (depends on the pan mode you've Selected)
@juergensuessmaier4689
@juergensuessmaier4689 Год назад
@@stupidusername38 Thanks, that works! Also, the panning mode (shown on the rightmost channel) can be changed using the "Prev" and "Next" buttons, in case someone is looking for that functionality.
