Nick Robinson, for Panorama, reports on the past five years in the life of the Conservative Party - on the eve of the first ballot in the Conservative leadership election. This Panorama episode was given a title which refers back to the film about the Labour Party made for "24 Hours" in 1971. It was transmitted on 9 June 1997.
I previously uploaded this programme • Panorama: Yesterday's ... but with some tracking problems on the VHS capture. Here is a clean capture, and in full 60fps video.
Interviewees are Norman Fowler, Jeffrey Archer, Charles Moore, John Whittingdale, Douglas Hurd, Lord McAlpine, John Townend, Simon Brooke, Sir George Gardiner, Ian Greer, Peter Butler, Sir George Young, Steven Horgan, Charles Lewington and Jonathan Hill.

Fiery American convention speech: "While we share a common goal, we cannot continue to [oblique reference to party candidate's policies, with him nowhere near the hall]." Fiery British conference speech: "This idiot has ruined everything [while giving the finger to the leader, who is sitting right there]."

Such a great documentary. The BBC used to put out thoughtful and neutral content. They need to go back to this format.

The more time goes by, the more and more the Blair/Brown era looks like an anomaly. Since 1979, Labour have won 3 elections out of 11 and just 13 years out of the last 41 years in power.

I honestly think you have to listen to Blair’s continuous comments about innovation to truly understand his appeal. And the proof of that, the sincerity of that is his and Gordon’s lack of desire to receive knighthoods. There’s something... messianic in their leadership. You want it to be admirable but like all baby boomers lol they just don’t have it in them to be loved. They only know how to be utilitarian. See Jack Straw.

It was ironic to see John Horam as a Eurosceptic. He began life in the Labour Party as a Labour MP on the moderate right of Labour. He left Labour in 1981 to join the SDP and presumably one reason he left was because of the Bennite Eurosceptism of the hard left. The SDP was a passionately pro- European party and then he joined the Conservatives around the late 1980's and became MP for Orpington and a Eurosceptic.

So people's houses were repossessed, business went bust, and families struggled to keep a roof above them or food on their tables, which undoubtedly led to people even taking their own lives.... And what did the chancellor do? He sang in the bath, and laughed and joked! Just shameful absolutely shameful!

Thatcher's vindictive streak came through with the 1990 Broadcasting Act which was designed to kill Thames Television who she hated for making "Death on the Rock" programme. The 1991 franchise round for ITV was Thatcher's final death blow to a great company, an independent company which she wanted to see brought to their knees. And she did. So much for being a devout Christian.

Whether we (as a nation) liked her or loathed her, Margret Thatcher had too much influence on who would follow in her mighty wake. Whoever became Tory leader after her, and especially if she was endorsed by her, then, for want of a better phrase, God help them. Her colleagues who supported her (rather than followed her beliefs like they were gospel) must have been too weak kneed to challenge her. With the Poll Tax for example, many of her colleagues knew that it was not going to go down well with the very "Middle England" they had won over after 1979, that it was going to cost them. Frankly, they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't

@@jamiengo2343 Yes. Major wasn't that popular even in 1992.. Labour lost that election especially with that Sheffield rally that they had just before the election. Was talking to my foster sister and told her if I was old enough to vote which I was not at the time as I was 16.5 years old then I was put off by the arrogance Maybe if they didn't did that rally then they might of won. But after what happened at Black Wendesday them the Tories would of been back in power in 97 and things would of been different. Maybe Brexit might of happened earlier. We will never know,
