I've been using pansies for a couple of years had no idea ground temp alters performance. Your annual garden will look great. Thanks Jim!

Jim, even though I'm in a completely different growing zone than you are, I always find something in each of your videos that is relevant or useful information for me to use in my zone 5a climate. Thank you for that. I love your tip of using an empty nursery container for saving space to plant spring bulbs. Tulips and daffodils are perennial here in my area, so once the blooms have faded, the foliage needs to die back naturally to feed the bulbs, so they will bloom again the following spring. Looking at the dying foliage of bulbs isn't a pleasing look. To camouflage that ugly foliage, I place metal filigree plant stands over the fading foliage and set a planter filled with annuals on top. That way the foliage is mostly out of sight while it has a chance to die back naturally, while the planter on top takes center stage.

The education I got busting my butt on an annual installation crew for some big landscapers, decades ago, has been invaluable. Sure can't plant 30+ flats a day but my little beds sure look good! A little elevation with some good planting medium makes a world of difference. @ HortTube with Jim Putnam do you pinch stretched plants or not? I'm hoarding the last of my compost too 😂

I planted viola last week in the ground and in pots. I have more to get out front. That area is warmer than my backyard so I wait a bit on those. Plus it’s hard to yank out those vincas that still look pretty darn good. I may have planted mine too close. I also planted some snapdragons and for some reason the bronze ones are not growing straight!

Same here in N. Georgia. I can't yank my New Guineas yet, they're still too pretty but the regular Impatients are flagging. Saw a fritillary butterfly today so the sad Zinnia can stay a while too.

@@katiekane5247 I’m in GA as well, Marietta. My regular impatiens are starting to stretch. I have some in a pot with foxtail fern. I brought the pot into the garage last winter and was super surprised when my white impatiens came back. All I did was cut them back.

In 8b, we have the same problem with a good selection of pansies available too soon for planting, and only leftovers when it's time to plant. Just wait, the big box stores will try to sell us pansies in May. Can we have a group hissy fit?

It’s always nice to see them growing throughout the winter in the south. In the north we usually plant them in early Spring. I wish they were more available in the north for a Fall/early Winter flowering.

I started my pansies from seed a few months ago, just to see if I could. I just got some in pots last week, and still have a few more in the tray. Some are blooming, so far so good.

I always bought my pansies when they showed up and big box way to early but that's the best selection. Brought home and I was lucky enough to have a frig in the garage so they stayed in frig until planting.

You don’t loosen the bottom and side soil of the pansies before planting?
