This is fucking gold right here! Two legends jamming, Dimebag finding his heavier/ more aggressive sound which we hear on Cowboys and after...this is priceless!
@@MrFi5her nah more like they got inspiration from Metallica’s earlier albums specifically kill em all and to be even more specific Dime even listed the exact Metallica song that made him want to play tighter and heavier rhythms which is motorbreath and he did mention that slayer also had some influence in finding a heavier sound as well
Can you imagine sitting in on this session. 2 of the most dominant guitarists ever, building up their chops...together. I wish more musicians today were like this...too much pride and hubris in the air. This is what music is all about!!!
OMFG - Kerry and Dime in the same room jamming Talk about history and CHILLS!!!!! Absolutely, insanely, completely funking SICK!!!!! Rest in peace Dime, rock on Kerry!
@Dado Valiente Funny enough and this is hard to believe but Kerry King is the teacher here, apparently it was Kerry that showed Dime how to make darker, more in your face riffs, this is one of the reasons their sound changed in the late 80s from glam to harder shit.
@@harrycallahan9143 how the hell is Kerry the teacher here when it's Dime showing Kerry the intro before the solo on the Pantera song power metal? And news flash. At the same time Pantera was glam. So was Slayer. They were called Dragon Slayer and they used to dress up in leather and spikes and poof their hair up and wear eyeliner and isht. And let's not forget kerry is a rhythm player. And I'm sorry but a rhythm ain't teaching isht to the lead. It's doesn't work like that. That's like putting the trailer in front of your truck thinking you're gonna give the truck a break. And lastly. It wasn't Slayer that initially made Dime and Vinny want to be harder. It was when they met James Hetfield. It's documented with like pictures and all kinds of isht. Dimes even said that like 1000 times in almost every interview. Rita will tell you the same thing. So will Kerry.
@@noname-jr1vo Dimebags Wikipedia... Abbott was a fan of the Southern rock band ZZ Top,[44] and he was influenced by the band's guitarist and lead singer Billy Gibbons.[72] He said in 1993: "I'm not a super blues player, but I was exposed to the Texas blues sound while I was growing up, and that definitely rubbed off on me."[113] Abbott was also influenced by contemporary metal guitarists such as Kerry King of Slayer. Well I guess that solves that mystery, why you crying about this? I've seen interviews where even Phil said Slayer had a massive influence on their sound. Slayer was never glam, their music was nothing like glam, they wore eyeliner and studs as they said to try and look (dark and evil) like their heros Mercyiful Fate & Venom, its like saying the Norway black metal scene are fucking glam because they wear makeup too. And here's a news flash for you buddy! The band's early image relied heavily on Satanic themes that featured pentagrams, make-up, spikes, and inverted crosses.[5] Rumors that the band was originally known as Dragonslayer, after the 1981 film of the same name, were denied by King, as he later stated: "We never were; it's a myth to this day.
Some parts of songs that I can recognize here are "Power Metal", "Death Trap", "Metal Storm/Face the Slayer", and one or two from the "Hell Awaits" album. Kerry played a show with Pantera in 89 at Joe's Garage and he played rhythm guitar for a few songs, including the songs in this video. This is historic stuff! Thanks for sharing!
One major skill that many musicians lack compared to the pros is ENDURANCE. It is one thing to be able to play a song or riff, but it is a whole other thing to perform them good enough live with no pauses or mistakes while being up to speed. Try to play almost any Slayer song without breaking a sweat, it's damn near impossible.
This gives me a warm feeling inside. Talk about a great fucking video thats 2 decades old. I noticed roughly 2 or 3 future Pantera Riffs and a couple Slayer riffs. This jam broke down into two bands and millions of dollars. Fucking metal!!!!
He was called Diamond up until Far Beyond Driven. Read the names on the inside of all their albums up through Vulgar Display of Power and it reads "Diamond Darrell".
I have had this in my collection for nearly 13 years. I just digitized it yesterday. I digitized it last year in slightly lower quality. This time I digitized the entire practice
These moments in time are golden....... Seeing 2 of heavy music's hardest hitters practicing and just generally fucking off having a good time......not to mention seeing how much Darrell loved that blue Dean ML....Thanks!
haha... that dude at the end totally knows this video is going to be watched by thousands of people some day "i fucking taped this" and we're glad you did bro!
Cool video, I saw another video where Kerry receives a guitar given to him by Dime. The guitar was promised to him but it didn't get to Kerry until after Dimes death. I had never realized the two were friends until I watched many videos like these. Nice post. Oh and yeah guys, just enjoy the video. Dime was teaching Kerry something new... Kerry was learning it at a tremendous speed. It wasn't a battle of guitar gods... gimme a break lol. Just enjoy.
i think its silyy that we just cannot enjoy watchin two metal legends jammin together without anybody sayin " oh x is better than y" or " x is stupid and y is cool" also, u cannot compare each other, they play different styles of metal man....anyway, in this case, they r both really good!
Man after a few months of taking guitar lessons this is basically what my teacher and I did it brings back to mind some interesting solo duel like things Ii did
Are you kidding man? his hair suddenly became unpuffy and went down as if he did something with it, and the beard & moustache he grew changed his face so much! He looked so different it's amazing...
C'mon, so you guys say this two guitar legends suck it on this vid? They're in a practice session working out some parts together. I think that if you say they suck it's because you never played the guitars 3 or 4 hours a day during 5 years, it's a really hard work to achieve mastery at guitar playing, and these two guys did it.
2 Legendary bands. I think that Dimebag teaching King played a major role in how King played on Seasons. Seasons in the Abyss features some of King's best guitar work.
Dude it’s the complete other way round if weren’t for Kerry none of Pantera riffs would sound they way the do it was him and Phil that made dime like and use thrash metal techniques in their music they might of stayed a hair metal band if not for those two
@@ChickenJoe-tq6xd your saying no but that’s the hard truth 🤣🤣🤣your ignorance is showing, they wouldn’t be listening to that shit if Phil never forced them to in his car rides Phil made that band
Barrybuchanan and Caleb speak the truth... They both shred unbeleivably well. Dime might have had more feel in his play but Kerry's dark riffs are played insanely fast. Kerry is more like Zakk Wylde and Dime is well.. Dime is Dime there will never be another like him.
Now imagine if Dimebag were to join up with Slayer. He would probably be around still if he did. I think Dimebag's job would have been alot easier if he had another guitarist like Kerry King. I like Pantera don't get me wrong but, yeah.
It's Power Metal, man! What an Effing Song! Goddamn! out of all the 96 Studio songs on all 9 albums, there aint a single bad one! even all the other songs they did, B sides and all that, not one is bad! That's when you know a band is good! R.I.P Darrell!
this is like watching the changing of the guard...a young Diamond Darrell (which was his stage name...he switched to Dimebag after he wanted more street cred...Diamond was a lil ..um..)playing with Kerry King, who at the time was THE metal god in 1989. Its wierd how Dime's hair got smaller and he got bigger later on....lol. I truly miss that guy and his playing... This is classic tho.
I can only imagine how Pantera with Kerry King on Rhythm guitar would sound in a studio environment, throw Vinnie Paul into the mix and I guarantee you that the breakdown would’ve been a staple in Metal a LOT sooner.
I agree Its pretty normal for me. The 1st Slayer album I got for Christmas was the "Live Undead" picture disc (remember thoe's?) And the 1st song I heard was "The Final Command" I just remember playing Captor of Sin over and over. Ive heard alot of people complain about the Show No Mercy album having shitty production, and I never understood that. I still listen to all tose songs today.
I get so tired of people saying who is the best of all time or Dime vs. Zakk Wylde or whoever vs somebody else. Just appreciate what each one of the greats bring to the table. It's good to listen to other styles & broaden your horizons instead of thinking everybody should play & sound like any one certain player. Variety is the spice of life. I mean c'mon...you wouldn't want to eat the same thing for dinner every night. Think about it.
Well, if you listen closely to what they were playing in the first few minutes, you'll think of Necrophiliac. Which was mainly produced by King himself. Although Jeff came stepped to the plate and managed to keep the song more than alright. Gotta love the old skool shit, man!
now if kerry king and dimebag were in a band together kerry playing riffs, with dimebage harmonising and doing leads, keeping slayers singer, and maybe. just maybe, the drummer from rush, turned metal :P we would have the best metal band ever!
well u cant just say that, cuz what probebly happened was dimebag was showing him the riff and he was tryin to follow, sometimes(depending on ur day) you can get it right off the bat, or lag for a little bit til u get it
