Jim hears Guilhem Desq slaying the Hurdy Gurdy with a Pantera cover. I have more questions than answer on this one guys. One thing is for sure, this guy has a creative unique set up and I dig his vibe.

it's a six-string hurdy-gurdy, the crank acts as a bow by spinning a friction wheel. The expression of the note can be changed by the amount of pressure added to the note key and the speed of the crank. The metal bar is what engages the 5 and 6 string. This is a really old instrument (originating between the late 9th century and mid 10th century) that is being modernized and revitalized.

Someone in his family actually makes hurdy-gurdies and custom-made his. And I believe he's been playing Hurdy Gurdy since he was like 7 or 8 years old. Also beware traditional Hurdy Gurdy players who will be quite offended because they will tell you " he's doing stuff that any normal hurdy-gurdy player could play. People are paying too much attention to this one performer." Perhaps this might be like wanna-be novice guitarists focusing on Jimi Hendrix and ignoring all of the other talented guitarists from Satriani to Clapton.

I just noticed something else on the drum set up. He is useing two different mallets on the kicks. On the left kick he has some kind of long snares wrap. That mixed with a thicker mallet gives him the ability to get some great double bass and snare hits in.

Physically the hurdy-gurdy reminds me a little bit of a fretted viol whose great grandmother on the father's side had been a hand crank music box that snuck off in the middle of the night to have a midnight tryst with a guitar. Their child was the first hurdy gurdy!

check out "patty gurdy sweet dreams" and you will see better how the thing works as she engages each string in turn, the bass, the treble, the "song" string , then watch her jerky crank movements, opposed to the slow gentle cranking, to see how she does a cicada like sound in a beat to the music with the "trumpet" strings , the magical buzzing as patty puts it, hope this helps...

You should check out another hurdy-gurdist, Patty Gurdy! She did a pretty awesome cover of Over The Hills and Far Away by Nightwish. Her original song, One By One, is also really nice.

Go to patty gurdy how play the hurdy its a drone instrument the crank works a wheel that works the strings and the metal wing presses the strings down

Hey Jim, really pleased that you have some questions about the Hurdy-Gurdy. I can really recommend the Swiss Folk Metal band Eluveitie as they incorporate the Hurda-Gurdy into their songs extremely well. Their player is the awesome Michalina Malisz and she has her own yt channel and she explains the instrument and also plays some covers - ru-vid.comfeatured. Before you do anything else, check out this excellent video by Patty Gurdy describing “...how the hell does a hurdy Gurdy work?...” (Patty’s great!) Then check out her music. A great two minute instrumental “ditty” titled “Gurdy’s Green” is a great start. She wrote this music herself.
