On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) was joined by Jacob Winans(@JacobWinans8) for another edition of Winans Wednesday(on a Thursday) to break down the Panthers' 3-0 shutout win over the New York Rangers in Game 1 from Madison Square Garden. It was a near perfect game for the Cats as they suffocated the Rangers in their own end for most of the night. Florida was able to suppress shots once again that allowed Sergei Bobrovsky to leave his best for last. New York came into the series with the best power play in the postseason, but Florida stayed disciplined on the night where they went to the box only twice. Rangers tried different line combinations to try to create some type of spark but they could not get anything going. Florida broke through toward the end of the first period thanks to Matthew Tkachuk with a shot through a screen, where that ended up being the GWG. Florida didn't allow a shot by the Rangers for a 14-minute stretch in the second period that really saw Florida take over, despite leading by a goal. This game was put to bed after the Cats killed off a penalty for too many men on the ice with an own goal by the Rangers off a shot by Carter Verhaeghe in the late staged of the third. The guys give their three stars, when they thought the game was won, and some wild stats from Sergei Bobrovsky and Matthew Tkachuk after taking a 1-0 series lead and stealing home-ice. We discuss this and more on today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast: Your Team, Every Day.

Great win for the Cats! Despite the Vegas odds, I think many consider Florida to be the underdog in this series. The Panthers seem to embrace that role (it helps that their Captain embodies quiet confidence). They played aggressively but I was very impressed by their discipline and ability to avoid silly penalties. The too many men on the ice penalty was uncharacteristic for them. Rangers will be coming out hard in Game 2 so let's hope the Cats can stay sharp (and the President's Trophy curse remains in effect).

Zenman1001, I fully agree on every single point you made! If they play the rest of the series like they played in game 1, they will win it in six games. I don’t think that either the Stars or Oilers can hang 60 minutes with either the Panthers or the Rangers. That’s why many people, myself included, believe that the Eastern Conference Final is the de facto Stanley Cup Final.

Change the damn cycling to the top on the power play and keep it low. Rebound is the best pass. Clean up the odd man rush, hoist the damn Cup.

The only thing that’s extremely worrying is the cats power play, can’t win a cup when you can’t capitalize on power plays at the right times

Seems like Bob is dropping his stick more often lately. Does he have some type of injury or is it purposeful (quick repositioning) or is it due to something else? It gets scary when there's a flurry in front of the net and he's without a stick.

Interesting how someone can point out the Rangers 7-0 start to the playoffs, but skip over the fact they were 1-2 in the 3 games prior to Panthers, now 1-3 in their last 4 games & that win required a hell of a comeback to get.

Didn't hear you guys talk about the disallowed goal with Lomberg crashing the net. Great episode nonetheless.

Spoke about it for about 30 seconds because there was zero controversy. If there were, we would’ve went more in depth. I get why because of the goal that Bennett scored in the previous round (which I was surprised that it was a good goal) sparked a lot of conversation. I personally didn’t think there was too much to discuss there. Lmk what you think of the call.

I was surprised that goal got reversed. Looked to me like Lomberg got cross checked into the goalie. Also Cousins got his face bloodied by an uncalled high stick in the first period (which they did mention). It was right in front of an official but I couldn't tell if it was a ref or linesman. Credit to the Cats for keeping their cool.

@@zenman1001 when Bennett’s goal wasn’t disallowed, it confused everybody on what goalie interference is and isn’t. 😅

@@LockedOnPanthersNHL Good point. I'm also guessing some Rangers fans were angry that E-Rod did not get a high sticking penalty but, my understanding is, those can't be called when it's from the follow through on a shot.

If you can just win this one too. Look for Rangers to put Rempe in for a shift early to fire up the team and the garden fans. You gave up two breakaways. At the start of the third period you had spent over a minute longer in their zone. Not bad but “weird” goal as the Ranger analysts Larroquette and Lundqvist both goalies agreed. Then Igor makes a big mistake and everybody panics and its an own goal. Is Reinhart ok? He took a big hit. panthers clever in ability to steal pucks especially against young Ranger D. One scramble moment when Rangers crashed the net and Bob makes two big saves. Look for Rangers to crash the net more. Must clear them.

Armando, what were you thinking picking the Rangers in 6?

1) one game, so I’m not claiming victory 2) I’d love to be wrong 3) we’re not a homer podcast, so trying to leave the bias at the door, you just never know how it all turns out until they hit the ice in a game setting I predicted Boston and Toronto to beat Florida in the postseason last season, I was wrong too. Batting 1.000 on series predictions is nowhere near be the be all end all of being a podcast host. It’s okay to be wrong.
