@avalonhill
A groundbreaking board game of armored warfare on the Eastern Front in World War II.
The game is tactical scale (company/platoon sized units) with geomorphic map boards. The 352 counters were 5/8-inch and very striking for their time.
250 meters per hex, 6 minutes per turn.
Avalon Hill Complexity Rating: 6
[From the box back]
...from the other side of the ridge comes the clanking thunder and the ominous dust-cloud that heralds the arrival of an onrushing wave of deadly steel: German armored columns on the attack.
...Russian tank commander's slam shut the hatches of their dreaded T-34's...gun crews prime their weapons and infantrymen hug the earth...
...and there-topping the rise!...a glint of dawn reflecting off the muzzle of the first German tanks...
PanzerBlitz is about to begin!
The game of PanzerBlitz enables you to re-create the drama and furious action of tactical-level armored warfare. Battle-simulations take place on a realistic mapboard which reproduces about twenty square miles of typical Russian terrain. The playing pieces are accurate symbolization of the platoon and company sized units which fought on the Eastern Front in World War II. More than a dozen different “scenarios” are given, each of which allows you to re-create a completely new game-situation in which to exercise your skill as an armor tactician. Prior military knowledge or experience, however, is not needed to play PanzerBlitz-just common sense, clear thinking and a competitive spirit.
IN EACH PANZERBLITZ GAME, YOU GET...
- 352 authentic unit counters
- Big 22”x24” mapboard in full color
- Comprehensive illustrated Rules-of-Play
- Game Situation Cards
-Campaign Analysis Booklet
...PLUS SPECIAL FEATURES THAT MAKE PANZERBLITZ A NEW DEPARTURE IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE-SIMULATION GAMES!
Tactical level combat with weapons range and fire-over-distance. Three section “Geo-morphic” mapboard which can be re-arranged to form dozens of different terrain configurations. Platoon and company sized units which can be combined to form many distinctly different battle formations. Situation cards which allow the playing of several dissimilar games using the same basic rules. Easy-to-handle oversized unit counters with authentic armored vehicle recognition silhouettes. Rules which include such considerations as: Range; Elevation; Obstacles to Fire; Fortifications; Close Infantry Assault Tactics; Weapons Interrelationships, Motor transport; Mines; Anti-Tank Guns; Mortars; Spotting; Indirect Fire...and much more!
“Panzerblitz” is a German word which literally means “armored-lightning.”

First game I ever played in about 1972, aged 8 LOL. My neighbor friend's older brother had it and he used me as an available opponent. A great game for its time but the lack of an opportunity fire rule was an unforgivable oversight, leading to well-known absurdities in the way the game played.
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Год назад
There was an interesting article in the General about that - how tanks, for example, can't just turn and shoot accurately if an enemy is zipping from cover to cover a mile away, but yes, I know what you mean. They did address this in Panzer Leader, and I have considered playing Panzerblitz with those rules. Have you tried them?

Nostalgia for the high quality cardboard map, rather than paper. And the vivid colors. The rules for PanzerBlitz are elegant, being only a few pages. There is a certain desirable quality to not having "opportunity fire" on moving units, and the spotting rules for towns and woods. Still, there are also other rules from the later Western Front Panzer Leader game that are also more "realistic," and make more sense, such as the use of movement factors for a transport unit, and loading and unloading that were improvements (1/2 the movement factor to load or unload, rather than the entire movement factor). Fortifications turning into a wreck rather than a block after being destroyed. Etc. The Panzer Leader mine clearing rule for engineers I am not sure about. Whatever the case, Panzer Leader rules can be used for PanzerBlitz, but will change the probability of winning or losing for many scenarios, since the victory criteria are based on PanzerBlitz rules. A great game. An early simulation similar to what the military has used for a long time.

Fantastic! I still claim that it's the foundation of one of the greatest tactical game systems of all time. The refinements in Panzer Leader and Arab-Israeli Wars just made it better. When i first got divorced, my neighbors in the apartment across the hall from me (all half my age, of course 😀) were into D&D and the Magic: The Gathering card game. One of them noticed all three games sitting on my bookcase and said, "Dude! You're a gamer?!?" Yeah, but I only like the military stuff. "Hook us up! It'll be like a history lesson!" The really funny thing is that after they got the hang of the rules - they cleaned my clock almost *every* time. They preferred Panzer Leader, I could have given them the Eisenhower 'D-Day failure' speech a dozen times.
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Год назад
Haha, those are some great memories! Once we are done the 12 situations in the base game of Panzerblitz, we will move on to Panzer Leader. I will see if we can get to AIW - the jury seems to still be out on that one, as it has always had mixed reviews.
@panamafloyd1469
@panamafloyd1469 Год назад
@@LegendaryTactics, yeah..they got a little 'ambitious' with AIW. But OTOH, I think the designers might have just been trying to replicate Mid-East deserts with some of those changes. IIRC, you couldn't ford rivers in PL because they were 'deeper' in Western Europe? Yeah, stuff like that. Hope this gives you a chuckle..when I was in college, we'd take the Allied counters from PL, and the Russian ones from PB. And pick the "hilliest" boards from all three games and play "Korea".
@panamafloyd1469
@panamafloyd1469 Год назад

I am so sorry to change the topic completely while you are scrolling through the comments, but please, I ask for a moment of your time: I call out to anyone who will listen to an insane board game fanatic seeking help and advertising something really cool. Hasbro's Avalon Hill is currently hosting a HasLab crowdfunding campaign to kickstart and ressurect a game that died 12 years ago: my favorite game, the Battle of All Time, Heroscape. Heroscape is a collectable battlefield board game where the board is assembled from the ground up into any number of beautifully aesthetic, 3-dimensional, hex-based battlefields. You can make grasslands and desserts, mountains and volcanos and glaciers, forests and jungles and swamps, fortresses and ruins and roadways, anything you can imagine (and afford the pieces for). And all of this is merely the setup for a game that blends warfare from across all genres: historical, fantasy, sci-fi. It has dragons and elves, robots and spies, knights and ninjas and samurai, alien hiveminds and vampires, kyrie and vikings, Romans and Greeks, bugs and animals, cyborg gorillas and revolutionary war fighters, elemental creatures and werewolves, giants and trolls, and very soon it could have pirates (both alien and historical) and druids and cyborg monstrosities and steampunk furries and more insectile hives, all summoned from across time and space and incorporated into your armies to wage war on the world of Valhalla. It's simple enough for kids, and complex enough for tournaments, so it had a reputation for being a game that dads played with their sons (I certainly dragged my dad into it many times). It's a statistical game of dice and maneuvering, meshing a balanced blend of chance and strategy, that will make you want to meme "It's over; I have the high ground!" and "You underestimate my power!" If anything I've said strikes your interest at all, please consider googling "Heroscape: Age of Annihilation" and "HasLab" (I'd post a link but RU-vid won't let me) and consider helping us save this game. We need about 6500 more pledges (not counting stretch goals), but we still have 42 days left, so there is time to think it over. I'm not asking anyone to go out and pledge right this second. In fact, if you're undecided or concerned that the HasLab price is too great an investment to go in blind, feel free to reach out to me on Steam, friend code: 183118649, and I'll happily play a demo game with you via Tabletop Simulator to help show you what this game is about and see if it's right for you. Or you can Google the Heroscapers Discord server, where any number of online 'Scapers will eagerly give you a demo or let you watch a game if you ask. From the bottom of my heart, if you read this nerd's shilling all the way through, even if you don't support the HasLab, I thank you for humoring me.
