PAPAYA (branching "experiment") 

I remember when I was growing up in Hawaii, my grandfather used to cut down papaya trees, which according to him, would reinvigorate the old papaya trees and start producing good and big fruits like it used to do during it's first year of life. He told me that when papaya trees started to get taller and fruits not bigger than the size of an oranges, then that's the time to cut it down. He would cut it down three feet from the base.... and since papaya trees has hollow trunks, he would wrapped it and secured with a transparent plastic bag, or anything to prevent the water from coming in and stop it from rotting. Also, after cutting the tree, he would fertilized the soil around the papaya tree with composted chicken or cow manure. After a week, your will see new branches coming out, and four weeks after, he would get rid some of the extra branches and just save a couple or three strong healthy branches. After three months, you will start to see healthy papaya fruits coming out like it used to be.

The nutrients from the soil takes a long way up the trunk of the papaya that’s why the fruits are small. By cutting the top and encouraging low branches to grow will let the nutrients reach the buds to grow faster. Just make sure, the cut trunk is capped and sealed to prevent rotting that will eventually kill the tree.

We have a 27 year old tree beside our stairs for ease of picking fruit. When it gets too tall we lop off the top & place an upside used can so the stalk doesn't rot then it Sprouts new trunks from under the can. We've had spectacular fruit for 26 years from the one tree. ❤

When I cut the papaya trees back I place things on top of the cut to stop the rain from going into the trunk and rotting it out

This is how my Florida grown papaya are by necessity. Hard freeze every winter killed the top … I cover the trunk with wool and plastic. They get giant again in summer … branch out like a crown .

Your papaya trees are too close ..You should enrich your soil with compost . I have a lot of experience growing Papaya trees.

They will grow. I got a papay tree that started growing mutiple papayas. You cut one branch off and two more grows

An Australian who was working on a farm in the Phillipines did an experiment by placing a tin can over the stump of a cut down papaya plant to keep the water out of it to do an experiment to see if it will grow into a plant. Apparently that's meant to work !

Papaya trees usually have tiny little shoots that are on the side of the trunk but they never grow because the top of the tree is taking all the energy it needs to grow and doesn’t let the side shoots grow so if you cut the top off the energy goes directly to the side shoots and they will start growing

Thank you for the video. What state do you live in? We're from Arizona and have three papaya trees 1). Is dead and the other lost all the leaves and it's getting ready to go to do to we left the country for a month and lack of watering but, the third one it's doing amazing. I am trying to save the second one and do you know how? Thank you in advance.

It'll be nice to see if you can just cut them down and plant them into the soil. They will be really low bearing papaya trees. It'll be quite a scene.

No offence but those are the smallest papayas I've ever seen. Is it the weather there? Here in the tropics (South East Asian- Malaysia) Papayas grow like weeds. As long as they got full sun, not a bit of shade, they'll produce at least decent fruits. Thanks for the nice experiment. I think I'll try cutting some and see if they branch out. Never heard people prune papayas in my country.

When it branching you can airlayer them, and you will have dwarf payaya trees.
