This video is about ham radio CW operation mode using a home made CW paddle. The paddle is built of a simple foldback paper clip. It only takes few hours of work and costs almost nothing. Despite simplicity, the paddle is fully capable of Iambic operation with any radio having the iambic keyer installed. I use this paddle with my ICOM IC-705, IC-7300, Elecraft KX2, QCX-mini transceivers with great success. This paddle is perfect companion in outdoors operation since it is not prone to freezing temperatures, air humidity, snow or dust. (But I don't recommend of course, to operate your precious rig in the open rain, snow or a dust storm :) ).
I found this idea in the SPRAT magazine Autumn 2005. However, the article has not provided the information on where the original idea of this paper clip paddle has come from. If you know, please drop me a line in the comments section!

Hi, Linas In the USA, it's known as a "binder clip" , because it has the capacity to hold together more than a few pieces of paper. Enjoyed the vid!

@@usernamemykel No, I can't supplement the existing video with new photos or video shots without uploading it as a new video. I thought, I did my very best to provide the video with high enough resolution of pictures or close-up video shots :). If you could specify, please , what parts or moments of the video you'd like to clarify out, I could probably make more pictures and put them under the Community tab of this channel. 73! Linas LY2H

Linas, thank you for the video! As I said before, I like the commercial incarnation of this type of paddle (BullDog by K9LU) very much. You tutorial is detailed explanation, which, taking into account that K9LU stopped offering his paddles, is really helpful and timely. 73!

Hola Linas. Greetings from San Salvador. Just in case it is useful... Ren, KG4BAS, build and sent me a set of paddles, just like yours, back in December, 2011. It is commonly known as the "Bulldog Paddle". Bulldog Paper Clip, is one the different names by which they call those clips in the USA. He made them himself. He designed this by himself to be used on the Hendricks PFR-3A QRP Transceiver. Maybe those paddles already existed before and he "designed" the mounting for the PFR-3, or maybe he was the very first one designing those Paper Clip Paddles for the first time.... I really don't know for sure. He made them for me so I could use them at the front of my PFR-3A QRP transceiver. They attach exactly the same as you do with your Elecraft. Any way, just wanted to mention this as this happened a long, long time ago and could be of historical reference for you. Also, if you need photos let me know. 73, Rob. YS1RS.

Hola Rob! Thanks for this interesting info! Yes, I know the Bulldog brand, it was pretty widely advertised many years ago among the QRP community. Unfortunately, they are not produced anymore… As I say in the video, I got the design idea from the SPRAT magazine of 2005. So, if Ren KG4BAS, accordingly to you, made them in 2011, it means the design was already there. Unless Ren has designed it some time earlier and 2011 was just the year he made it and sent it over to you ? Anyway, it’s an interesting story and an ingenious design ! With the 3D printing era now, the design might be even more ameliorated :). And yes, I’d appreciate some pics if you could send them over to me! (at ly2bhp(at)gmail.com). Thanks! 73! Linas LY2H

Im working on some now- lots of trial and error for me, thanks for this video! I cant quite get the same springy-ness as you get- but Im working on it! For the copper pcb- is that copper straight touching the clip? Or is it insulated one side and copper the other? Thanks again! 73’s va3kbt
@Linas_LY2H
@Linas_LY2H Год назад
Thanks Kevin! The springiness is depending on the grinding angle on the lever-holding place and on the distance between the two legs of the each lever. If the springiness is too weak, try to spread-out the legs of the lever, this will make the lever sit more tightly in its place. As to the pcb pieces- yes, it's one side copper only, the back is insulated. In no way should the copper side get in contact with the clip body, or it will make a permanent connection to the ground of the dits or dahs line, or both, in the keyer. These tiny pcb pieces act as Did and Dah contacts and the clip body through the levers, act as a central, ground, contact. HTH, good luck in making it! Please feel free to ask if anything else needs to be clarified! 73! Linas LY2H
