My sisters and I have just spent some strenuous and stressful days (spaced over several months) trying to declutter our childhood home. Mom is 101 yrs old and in a skilled nursing facility now. The house is a large farmhouse on our family farm. My mother lived there over 60 yrs and is a packrat hoarder. She always attributes it to having grown up in the Depression, and later having had to make do because there wasn't much money. That has made me take a hard look at my own home, and all of the "stuff" I have, store, don't use, but don't want to let go of because I spent so much money on it, or maybe I'll need it sometime in the future. I'm slowly making the trips to the donation center, several boxes and bags at a time. You're right. I don't miss what's gone. I want more gone. I'm getting old and won't have the energy for this soon. But I don't want anyone to get stuck doing this after I die or have to leave my home. It's my responsibility.

Carol Taggart ...I recently cleaned out my mom’s possessions. She had been decluttering on and off for a couple years, but had not been able to let go of things that had sentimental value. Just like you, it made me rethink what all I had and to look at it through the eyes of the people that would have to dispose of it at some point! Our moms grew up in a time before there was a $General on each end of town and she had to make do and “shop her stash” of miscellaneous items saved. She never could throw away something that she might need later.

I've done that and sometimes it even works. Some of them say yes but it'll take a month for the cancellation to take effect, so you may keep getting catalogues till then. So you wait for a month and the catalogues keep coming. And only slightly off topic, because it isn't paper - a company I bought from sent me emails about twice a week, until the pandemic, when it became once or twice a day. I unsubscribed, and a few days later got an email: "Are you ready to reconnect now?" Aaargh!

Yes. I also go with the one touch method. We walk from the garage into the house. On the way to the house door all the junk mail, envelopes etc are put straight into the recycle bin. They never enter the house. Once in, receipts are filed to be verified when the bill comes in, filing is done and SOMETIMES there is an item I have to deal with later which is on a plate thing. Later will be within a couple days. I hate paper clutter and finally have it figured out. Old fashioned daytimer for events, mtgs etc

I find the longer i leave any task, the more likely it is that itll never get done. Now ive adopted the eat the frog mentality and get it over and done with asap and will often make myself do things as soon as i walk in before i sit down no matter how tired or anything because as soon as i sit down and turn on my relax mode my motivation to get things done just gets pushed to tomorrow or the later that never comes.

I once had (I kid you not!) a big, rectangle clothes basket that contained my paper monster, filled to the brim! Every time I looked at it, It nearly gave me a nervous breakdown! But it kept growing. One evening, I dumped it smack in the middle of the living room floor, where I had 3 choices . . . work on it, let the cat continue to use it for a bed, or keep walking around it!! LOL!! I went thru it piece by piece, and found, among other interesting things, a check for over THREE HUNDRED dollars!! Nowadays, the mail might lay on the end of the counter for a day, but never longer, and I keep a small box behind a door in the kitchen and most everything goes in there for shredding. Also, I love the "wet the paper" idea!

Years ago the "boss" (my wife) mandated that we clean out the home office and our 6 drawer filing cabinet. Shredded and recycled 14 33 gallon bags of paper. Found pay stubs from 1988! After the mass shred event we went paperless and online for all bill paying. We no longer have the paper problem. All mail is dealt with in the garage immediately. Recycle paper bin gets most of our "mail".

Dawn - All great tips! Thank you for tackling all the tough home clutter topics every day. Here’s another idea to help keep the paper clutter down - never bring the junk mail into the house. When I get the mail each day, I stop in the garage and drop all the junk mail in my paper recycle bin. Keeps the in-house paper clutter down and I’m never tempted to purchase whatever are in the ads. Win/win!

I also had a small calendar that I recorded when bills were due each month. When my husband & I got in a bad accident in 1997 my dad had to step in and run my household. He was happy that I had a bill paying system in place (this was before the internet) and found it easy to follow. I continue doing this with a cheap dollar store basket to this day.

This week we started remote learning. I have a preschooler, Kindergartener, and 2nd grader. It was quite chaotic yesterday but it felt AMAZING to be done by noon! I started having anxiety with the amount of papers coming in after only one packet pick-up! So I created a system in which each child has a wall basket, where all of their work is located. They each have an incoming folder and an outgoing folder. In addition, I have a little file box with different color folders that contain papers that they may need to use all year (i.e. math doubles rap) and for temporary papers that are for the week (i.e. spelling list). I just need to make sure I go through this at the end of the week! It did help lessen my anxiety to create a system. Now back to my pile of bills to file...😫😫😫 I am going to use some of your AWESOME tips and tricks! Thanks for sharing, Dawn!🙂

My grandson has a disability so school, medical and agency paperwork is never ending. I asked a research psychologist who has worked with him how much of the records I should save, since I have them going back his whole ten years. She said keep it all, you just never know with this particular disability what they might want to see/know in the future.

OMG, so I'm not the only person who puts the clutter in bedroom when "real guests" come! Haha, love it! Once my MIL decided to take her relatives thought a whole tour of my house, (IDK, don't ask), when she saw the piles of undesirables in our bedroom she was pissed. Anyway, random story. Some people need boundries!

Great system, but for me, “out of sight, out of mind!” I would have to keep your bills file and “time will tell” bin on the work counter where I could see them. But then, I’m not very minimalist. Appreciate the tips, though! 😊

My paper clutter is the worst! It piles up and then gets swept into a paper bag when I know company is coming to 'go through later' which never happens. I have three bags of this right now!! 95% of it is probably to be thrown away. I am determined to take your instructions to heart and stop this very bad habit!

I just made a 'time will tell' bookmark folder on my laptop!! I always browse and save things 'for later' in various locations, but often forget I've saved them!! The 'time will tell' is a great way for me to browse these 'at a glance' and filter them from there!!

I do the same on my computer. Good idea! I'm going to do that. Since it's difficult to tell how full an online folder is, I think I may date by month - say, NOV. 2021 - then I'll know to go thru it in Dec & toss whatever I didn't read.

I've been explaining my actions to hubby for awhile now, regarding simplifying our home. I think he's been fine with seeing more open spaces around and more room in the closet. * When you were walking the path that papers used to take in your home it was like watching myself! I can SO relate! (I am making progress though, thanks to your videos =) * I love your system (especially that it is simple and I don't have to buy anything fancy) with the "Time Will Tell" bin. It is the PERFECT solution for me of where to put catalogs and such. * I love your self discipline. You have really learned from the past. * I know it is very time consuming to film and edit videos. Thanks for taking the time to share what you have learned.❤ *️ I would LOVE to hear your ideas and philosophy about minimizing and simplifying RECIPES. Maybe simplifying recipes would be a good winter project for your viewers. =) * I'm guessing you have a day set aside to pay your bills since you file bills you are going to pay later. I would love to hear about your schedule and how you go about paying one time bills (like medical bills), balancing checking accounts, etc., if you haven't done a video on that already.

Thank you, Dawn ! Paper has always been my biggest house keeping down fall. I’m an information junkie ! A sentimental archiver ! Yes I do put an effort into purging papers and have made great strides. But I still need more help. Little paper piles still do inhabit my home, as well as files , & a few bins. Ugh ! I do get ruthless ( thank goodness). Certainly not a paper hoarder , but gotta admit it’s fair to say I’m a paper pack rat..medical records for myself , & my 2 pets ... ( kids are grown so yes I dont have theirs anymore ! ) ... articles about my beloved home town (history, music scene, etc) to scrap book ( yepp it’s true ! It’s fascinating haha ! ). Photo albums ... yikes. I did buy your walmart metal file thing. Love it. And pretty files. I was so proud of that purchase & setting it up lol ! It’s still not fully / properly utilized tho. I think i have some sort of mental block about how to work these systems. I think a label maker would be a game changer. Gotta get soon ! Getting there ! Thanks again, Dawn ! Love you & your Family ! God bless you !

Time will tell bin = "I don't have the bandwidth for this right now (but I don't want to throw it away yet)" for me. This is a great idea. Most times I do throw it out later or spend time unsubscribing on rare occasion but it is after 6 months sitting in a pile next to my bed!. I'm finally putting a small trashcan in each room where my kids or I end up putting trash or paper clutter. As someone diagnosed with ADHD, your time will tell bin will be helpful! Thank you!

I learned a long time ago in business, that paperwork should be handled just once, twice if it's a bill that can't be paid right away. If it's junk mail throw it away then and there. If it's a bill to be paid, pay it then and there. If you can't pay it then and there put all bills in ONE place to all be paid at the same time. Same with bills that come by email. I pay them, put paid bills in a folder and after 1 month when my next statement comes, I delete the previous one. I have changed due dates on bills so they all come due within a day or 2 of each other. This has made my life SO much simpler.

After watching this video the first time I put together my " no action necessary" box which includes my lightbill once I have reviewed it , notices I want to keep etc. WOW what a difference. I still have paper clutter but fewer piles than in the past. Last week I went through 3 wicker baskets small but still full of my notebooks I use for various projects, loose paper work, crumpled trash. I threw out alot as well as organized . I now am down to 2 baskets. I am rewatching several videos as they come up on my feed - as I still need the encouragement. However, you have really helped to change my life. I can not thank you enough

I burn my shred-ables in our firepit in the backyard. It's very satisfying, goes surprisingly quickly, and I love the fact that these envelopes and papers are COMPLETELY disintegrated! Were I to shred immediately, rather than save up a bagful of "shred this" items, I wouldn't have burned out 2 shredders. But I'm not (yet) that organized, and I love the marshmallows!

If you can (I do this), dedicate a day for paper each week. Spread it out to organize somewhere that forces you to finish it (I use my kitchen island). Get a cozy cup of coffee or your favorite drink, put on some relaxing or encouraging music and get to work! Make sure you have supplies on hand, label maker, favorite pens and highlighters, file folders, stapler, and a home for it all in the end. Have fun! You will feel like a Rockstar when you do it even once!💕💕💕
