Nintendo of America. You're the only branch of Nintendo that reads these comments. Perhaps the Japanese headquarters doesn't understand what American Paper Mario fans want? I don't know what the answer is but there's clearly a culture shock/confusion thing going on. I can't think of any other explanation. If any Nintendo employee from the american branch is reading, PAPER MARIO HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SELL WELL! There is a HUGE fanbase for the series just waiting to hand you their money. Ask any Nintendo fan and a huge majority place Thousand Year Door as their favorite Nintendo game. EVER! It's up to your branch to communicate to the Japanese branch and represent us. Someone who has access to them needs to just sit them down and be like "Hey big guy. You know what Paper Mario fans want? A classic Paper Mario experience. A traditional turn based RPG where we get to use Mario enemy staples as party members for a change. Thats it." Until then: RIP Paper Mario series. I have never been more disgusted with the direction a series as a whole has taken. The original Paper Mario on N64 single handedly drew me to Nintendo as a child. I don't get it. I just don't get it. You have such an amazing art style, a good sense of humor, and a game that could have been AMAZING for the Wii U. But no. They just take something that could have been great and build it on a game as shallow as Sticker Star. If the characters weren't just Toads and the gameplay wasn't terrible, this could have probably been even better than the original game or The Thousand-Year Door. What a waste. It's really disappointing.

I wanted to love this game...the opening was pretty cool and interesting. The environments look interesting. But that battle system man....it seems to have all the problems Sticker Star had. It's kinda sad. I mean... it's a pretty bad time to be a Paper Mario fan edit: having played the game, I actually liked it a lot and fixes a lot of issues SS had. But, lots of discussion in this comment so I wont remove it. But yeah, Color Splash is pretty good despite the stigma.

7 years later and I still dont understand the hate for this game. Im assuming that at the time they were just expecting it to be another sticker star that dissapointed fans, but I really enjoyed this game.

Nintendo does a fantastic job with the graphics but why can't they import it to make a better Paper Mario game or a remake of PM64 and/or PMTTYD. #MakePaperMarioGreatAgain

I'm not going to hate on this game. Frankly I haven't got any hate for this game left. No, I'm just disappointed now. Look, Nintendo or Intelligent Systems, or just some random person reading through the comments, I love the original two Paper Mario games. I still remember the first time I beat them, and I still occasionally go back to play them again. But this... this is not the Paper Mario I know and love. This is not the game I wanted, and sure, I acknowledge that there are plenty of people who liked Sticker Star, and there are plenty of people who will like this game, and that's great, there's no reason they shouldn't get a game they want. But what about those of us who have been here for 15 years? The ones who played the original games and have been waiting for a true sequel to TTYD for more than a decade? Why don't we matter? Why can't we have two Paper Mario series? There can be a Sticker Star type Paper Mario series, and then a more traditional Paper Mario series. That way everybody's happy, and the fans of the more traditional Paper Mario (myself included) would be less hostile and more willing to buy Color Splash.

Nintendo: You know what everyone loved about Paper Mario? Everyone: Yeah, the characters, the stylistic visuals, and the fact that it was a Mario RPG. Nintendo: Paper! Everyone loved the paper part. Let's just run with that. Oh, and take out all the RPG elements. Everyone: No. Nintendo, did you even hear us? Nintendo: You know what goes great with paper? Everyone: RPG elements. It's hard to believe this game and Sticker Star belong to the same series who gave us fun partners, original and creative characters, amazing storylines, great battle system, charming worlds and great exploration. These have nothing of that. They both have no partners, they both have a stupid map that limits exploration, they both have generic toads everywhere instead of original characters, they both have an awful battle system with no leveling up making it pointless to fight normal enemies, they both have boring worlds and dull enemies, they both lost the soul of Paper Mario. So this is not an improvement from Sticker Star. This is the same thing, so stop saying PM fans are reluctant to accept something new because the problem is not that we don't have a TTYD2, the problem is that this "new" formula (that is actually not new as we saw the same thing in SS) takes away all the charm we all know and love. Super Paper Mario introduced a new formula and it was amazing. The best one for me, in fact, because it still had partners, original and creative characters, great unique overworlds and a gorgeous storyline. But Sticker Star failed miserably, and there is no excuse to defend that this game follows the exact same terrible footsteps. Because it's really sad they are making the same mistakes for the second time in a row. The should have learned from the errors already. However this shouldn't come as a dissapointmment as for now. In the first trailer we already saw no partners, map, generic toads everywhere and horrible battle system. People kept saying it was too early to judge, that they might add partners or rework it and such. But now there you have it. This is what the series has become. Goodbye, Paper Mario. Goodbye.

You know what bothers me about Sticker Star and Color Splash? The overemphasis on the world being made of paper, they focus way too much on puzzles that have something to do with paper, the old Paper Marios also did that but never exaggerated it, nowadays they do it way too much it's like someone who's trying to explain a joke really badly, you just kill the charm.

What's weird is in the interviews the gameplay videos they're like: "This game takes after Paper Mario's past games, and makes them better!" Or whatever.

one of the most influential companies in the gaming world doesn't listen to their own fan base, and it's killing them. most of your fans are fans for your older games, they're waiting for you to be good again. sure zelda looks amazing, but that's it, and maybe pokemon sun and moon.

Poor Toadsworth. Replaced by a generic Toad in this game and by Toadette in Paper Jam. What's the matter Nintendo? A Toad with a stache is too unique for your new Paper Mario "standards?" Also we haven't seen who Bowser's right-hand minion is yet. I probably shouldn't delude myself into hoping for Kammy Koopa.

WTF NO LEVEL GAIN OR EXPERIENCE To remind you Nintendo, what fans fell in love with was was the ORIGINAL gams and the ORIGINAL formula. Even SPM was good. But you bring the developers of STICKER STAR? It didn't even sell that well. Cmon guys. Maybe that's why Sony and Msft are kicked your butts. They LISTEN. And besides Infinite Warfare they don't f*ck up the formula. Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way. Cause after SMG1 the story went away... Kinda. After M&LDT the story left... Kinda. The series really did die after TTYD after all, maybe the NX will revive the series, let's just hope that will be the case.

Sticker star wasn't horrible, but compared to Paper Mario 64 and TTYD, well it wasn't good. Sometimes change is good (MK8) but sometimes it isn't. I wish we could just have a regular Paper Mario game.

Hey, let's transform "The Legend of Zelda" franchise into a racing game, and all you do is race horses. Does that sound like a stupid idea? Yes, it is a stupid idea. So WHY does Nintendo think transforming an RPG franchise (Paper Mario) that everyone loved into this casual puzzle solver is a good idea? Why even have turn-based battles if there is no RPG elements like partners, skills, level-ups, badges, etc? I find myself questioning nearly every decision Nintendo does lately. What is happening with this company?

You people need to understand that Nintendo is a traditional Japanese company ran in a very top down manner. The Nintendo board of directors all have three things in common: they're old, they're men, and they're Japanese. They have a plan for the direction of their company, and input from fans in North America and elsewhere mean very little to them. Several of them probably don't even know how to get on a computer and browse the Internet to review feedback. Nintendo is a very old fashioned company, there are many like it in Japan. I know first hand from experience working at a similar company in Japan. And yes, this is the attitude that is killing Nintendo. It will take some major changes and some painful soul searching at Nintendo HQ to correct it, and I have followed them long enough to see this probably will never happen. I don't know what the future holds for Nintendo, but personally I am not optimistic. Breaks my heart but it's true.

First they came for F-Zero, and I did not speak out- Because I was not an F-zero fan. Then they came for Metroid, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Metroid fan. Then they came for Mario & Luigi, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Mario & Luigi fan. Then they came for Paper Mario-and there was no one left to speak for me.

I swear, if they make another Paper Mario and it's called "Paper Mario: Marker Mayhem" then I've lost all hope in Nintendo.

looking back 3 years later, Nintendo has REALLY changed. They fixed 3d mario with Odyssey on the switch and kinda fixed mario party. So maybe nintendo is listening to their fans and we can hope for a paper mario with gameplay like TTYD or PM64 and a story as good as SPM. #Storiesnotstickers!

You know what's sad, this game looks AWESOME (graphically.) Seriously, the paper aesthetic is beautiful here... but there's a problem. THIS ISN'T THE F***ING GAME WE WANT NINTENDO. NOBODY WANTED A SEQUEL TO STICKER STAR. NOBODY PLAYS PAPER MARIO BECAUSE IT'S MADE OF PAPER AND THEY WANT TO SEE THE GREAT "PAPER INNOVATIONS" YOU CAN COME UP WITH. And with Super Mario RPG never getting a sequel, Paper Mario (actual Paper Mario) never getting a sequel, and Mario and Luigi not being fun, it looks like we will never get a true Mario RPG ever again. The one with good stories, good game play, great worlds, and great characters. And that hurts Nintendo, it really does.

Nintendo, stop taking things to the extremes. It seems like they are of the mindset that the PM series is either a copy of the first two, which they don't want, or they have to take it in the opposite direction and change everything. This is not how you do. Take the original ground work, you know, the one that made us fans of the PM series in general, then improve it. Yes, add new ideas and what not, but you can't completely gut the original formula, that doesn't work. And don't give me that "Just play M&L" crap, thats comparing apples too oranges. PM had a special level of world/character building that the M&L series hasn't come close to (not knocking the M&L series, I love it). You had to mix and match badges for new attacks, think through which partner would be best for a situation, and if you get hit, theres no "jumping over it" or whatever, you took the hit, so you had to be careful. The PM series was a magical series full of charming original characters, amazing unique locations that held their own little plots that all meshed with the over arching plot, and fun and creative bosses that you ACTUALLY had to fight to beat. There was no "Use (insert item) to win!" crap. And don't get me started on the final boss from Sticker Star. "Oh, whats that? You don't have the items you need for the final boss because you aren't psychic and couldn't see into the future to know exactly what was needed? Well, running isn't an option, so I guess you'll just have to let Bowser beat the snot out of you until you game over!" Yes, I know Sticker Star outsold the first two, and theres two reasons for that. First, the install base for the 3DS is MUCH higher than the N64 and Gamecube, unless I'm mistaken. Second, After SPM (which I enjoyed), fans were starving for a real PM game, and what you showed originally looked like a return to form, and we were hyped for it, and then you pulled the rug out from under us, but we still had hopes, only to have them dashed. The biggest issue is that, from a gameplay perspective, a lot of the SS (and to an extension, CS) is flawed. Battles are meaningless, "But hey, you get EXP so you can hold more paint now!", yeah, or I could just not waste paint in battle, and replenish whatever I use by hitting the scenery, as it's been shown that you can get a decent amount of paint back from that. Then theres the boss fights. Stop it. No seriously, I love boss fights, and you are hurting me with this. It was bad enough in SS when you'd get scolded for not playing the game how you wanted us to and basically cheesing the boss, but now it looks like if we don't play how you want us to, the boss with just nearly one shot us (if Morton is anything to go by). Also, you are giving us too much HP. This is a bit different as it's not a major flaw per se, but when we had smaller numbers in the first two games, taking a hit, or hitting a foe really meant something. It wasn't like other RPGs where you deal some random big number, no, you dealt 4 damage out of the bosses 50. It made it feel more coherent. Seriously Nintendo, I grew up with you, I love your games, but you seem to be missing the point of what made them fun, you're making them different for the sake of them being different, and when you do try to make a change, you go way to far and alienate the fans that were with the series from the start. You make sequels because enough people loved the first game in a series right? So why are you ignoring the aspects of the first two games that made the series loved in the first place? And that was my little rant, good night ladies and gentlemen! EDIT- And knock it off with the Toad crap. You set this game on a tropical island for goodness sake, use the Mario Sunshine NPCs or something, jeeze.

As a long-time fan of the Paper Mario series, I think it's safe to say that this poor excuse of a game will cause the series to die out... And that's sad because Paper Mario & its first sequel were two of the funnest games I had ever played. R.I.P.- Paper Mario. We thought we knew you well!

It's okay for a game to change over time but a game shouldn't be changed drastically to the point where it's something completely different from its predecessors.

All I can say is that I feel grateful that I played Paper Mario 64, and Paper Mario TTYD when I was a kid. Those were great times as a Nintendo fan, and I feel sad that kids today can't experience good Nintendo games, but mediocre Nintendo games at best... Such a shame...
