I just completed the game today. This was my first paper mario. I now understand why this is the critical darling of the series. Visually beautiful. Loved how simple the leveling scale was. I never felt the need to grind in this game. Characters were all so charming, I cant believe this is a game from the early 2000s it feeels so modern and timeless. Excellent Review

I played through this game once on the Gamecube, almost 10 years ago, and only got half-way through it. But I still remember it very clearly. Which probably says a lot about the game.

@PelvicGaming I say give it an try. It's an basic game in terms of the story & gameplay and the battle system might be an little bit slower than TTYD has. But it's still really solid all around and has that charm that Paper Mario is known for. Plus what Paper Mario 64 does do better than TTYD are the level designs and less backtracking.

This game is still so good, I was nervous going into the Switch remake after not playing the original in so long but it holds up really well. The characters have so much personality and the world is weird in the best way. It got a liiiittle fetch-questy at times (eg walking back and forth between the same areas over and over again, was especially egregious on the Island), and most of the side quests feel pretty inconsequential imo, but it generally was always fun

I did played the original back in 2004 but I was like 7 and didn't know hat to do and of course I never finished it... 20 years later I'm currently playing the remake and yeah it's not that bad. Think of it as a little redemption arc for me really.

I loved this game on the GameCube. My brother and I “competed” with each other to see who could finish first (he did), but I won one competition: who got the “best” Yoshi. I missed out on this during the GameCube era. As a 25 year old single guy at the time this came out, these types of JRPGs were known as a “baby game” meaning you don’t want to be caught playing it or else you are giving up your man card and you may even lose friends over it. This was much of the thinking among guys in the 90s and 2000s where while Super Mario RPG for the SNES was respected, Paper Mario for the N64 wasn’t due to this cell shaded style. I know today most kids can’t imagine a world like that where kids and adults thought this way due to how much has changed with attitudes and thoughts since then. But it was there. I attended college through it. The kids bought these games back then, not adults. I don’t have a Switch, but I do hope the physical GameCube version will come down in price now that this is out.

Also recently played it and beat it, I had it at a 9/10 game. The things I didn't like about it: #1: Leveling up really forced you to go exclusively Badge Points. I think that takes away from the choices you can make leveling up when one is just objectively better than most other options for 90% of the game. #2: Some badges are just too valuable. The ability to swap partners on the fly or any of the Attack Up badges are just, so significantly better than all the other options, yet use up all the BP, that it felt like I couldn't really experiment with the different abilities. Tying Attack Up to be mostly badges really hampered the flexibility of the system to me. This also brought down combat for me. #3: Timed hits are good, but I felt that, with how many characters there were, how many Badge Skills their were, new skills, etc., all of those had their own timing on hits, and it also hindered combat. Like, with SMRPG, you only had a few skills for each character so timed hits weren't that big of a deal, and even with Sea of Stars, so many skills sucked that you only needed to learn the timing for a few abilities anyways. There was too much here for me to properly appreciate. #4: To me, there are plenty of times the game wastes your time for certain actions. I was fine mostly with the troubles and backtracking, but things like having to go find all the Spin Jump Panels (which is unreasonable to notice on your first go-through), the General White recruitment, I Love You x100, and quite a few other things felt like unnecessary time wasters. That, and the final super-long dungeon having no reliable checkpoints, meaning you'd have to go through everything again if you wanted to leave and buy items, you'd have to run through all the enemies and puzzles again outside a couple moderately solved ones, but it's still a real long slog. Again, great game, loved playing it, but there were enough minor things that knocked it off that really top tier of games for me.

Glad you enjoy this. I'm not an super RPG guy by any mean. But the Mario RPG'S are one of the few RPG's I can get into easily since there very standard, easy to play and was very different than other RPG'S I've experienced. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is one of the best RPG games to experience and it is the Holy Trinity of the Mario RPG games; along with Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario 64. Which I'm curious if you'll ever get into 64 since it is the first Paper Mario game.

I slept on this one for a long time, not just because I didn't have a GameCube, but because I'd thought the absolute beauty of the first Paper Mario just *had* to be a fluke. I wound up grabbing this for about $10 in the Wii era because nobody cared about GameCube at the time, and I was pretty blown away; Boggly Woods and Twilight Town were just jaw-dropping. I wound up not liking this one as much as the first, because the first is such a tightly-wrapped package, but it's still a solid game.

Yesterday I finished this game for the first time and think it is a masterpiece... That being said I don't think it's perfect. It has too much backtracking, pointless side quests considering the Pit gives far more money and XP than any side quests and annoying puzzles. In spite of the flaws I still loved it but would never describe a game as 'perfect'

If you do end up looking back on any of the other Paper Mario games I actually do recommend Origami King. It's a bit divisive but IMO it has some really really great elements (music, aesthetics, humour, puzzles). Great review!!

I know only getting one star point is kind of annoying when fighting weaker enemies but at keast it's better than in the first paper mario game were you would get nothing from most battles after grinding.

Nice review (as usual)! All the Paper Mario games are pretty great except sticker star. Color Splash is one of the most underrated games ever imho. One of the funniest and best looking games I've ever played.

@@PelvicGaming Yeah Color Splash was a bit tone deaf on a few details in relation to the hardcore paper mario fanbase when it released, so it never got the praise it would've deserved, in my opinion anyway. As you say, most seem to think it's okay at best. Both Origami King and Color Splash obviously share pretty much the same amazing art style, but CS has a bit smaller stages with more varying themes (they don't outstay their welcome just like you mentioned about TTYD). Both OK and CS "combat systems" are flawed, but I found OK's combat getting old and painful really really fast. At least personally if I play an rpg-like game, I just want to relax, I don't wanna solve a puzzle-game every fight. : P Luckily some way into the game there's a way to turn on a setting that shows the solutions to the puzzles.

Did you play Paper Mario 64? Curious to see what you'd think if you haven't played it. Going back to these two games as an adult made me notice things about the "hallway" design of the sequel and the "dungeon" design of the OG game that I never noticed before.

Good point about the lightheart change! I agree, it's a jrpg pallet cleanser while still being a jrpg. The writing is fantastic, humorous, I love this game with all my heart and I hope you get into soon. It's AMAZING. It warms my heart so much that you loved this game. TTYD has been right up there with Chrono Trigger and the best Final Fantasies as an all-time-favorite JRPG ever since I came home from school to a surprise gift in my Gamecube. This remake really ramped it all up to 11, sprucing up the gorgeous aesthetic, giving us unique battle music for each area, the conveniences added in, the new superbosses, and even restoring our girl Vivian's trans status in a really respectful way. Although I am sad that they changed the dialogue of the first goomba enemy crew from creeping on Goombella, because her shutting them down before you get to knock them out was a great aspect of her sass. Nevertheless, it improves in almost every way on the original. I hope the success of this remake paves a way for a return to form for the series.

"Paper Mario is perfect"... Which Paper Mario? The TTYD with unnecessary generic robot villains and the creepy AI computer that could be written out of the story without any significant implications? That is.. the one with a LOT of awful backtracking and core elements that are a one-to-one copy of the N64 version (like story beats and even partners)? The one with the unnecessary stage hazards nobody asked for or wanted and actively ruin the tight combat gameplay that was already perfect?
