Considering how the existence of an entire Goomba University implies that a good sum of Goombas don't end up enlisting for Bowser, I wouldn't be surprised if Goombas are at pretty serious odds with each other most of the time. I mean, if Headbonk Goombas can be considered "ruthless, uncultured thugs" by the rest of Goomkind, maybe that's why they're so pitifully weak. Always taking a side about every little thing, all of them arguing over which is the best way forward to ensure that one day, Goombas will be a rung higher on the natural pecking order... It's interesting to see how this game seems to almost fuse aspects of the "Modern Half" of the Paper Mario series identity with the more-beloved "Older Half". Some of the iconic sound effects from the newer games are snuck in here - like how when an enemy expires, you also get the recurring "wee woo woo" sound effect (that debuted in Sticker Star) before they explode into that more iconic "pfwee ee ee ee" sound effect that's signified enemy deletion in pretty much every game thus far. The Paper Plane, too, includes the flashy "Shwing!" sound effect that debuted in Sticker Star... While this probably is just an effective way of reusing an old sound library for HD Emphasis, I do wonder how much the modern design style for Paper Mario shaped the details of this remaster. Beyond things looking much more papery, I mean. ... Okay, onomatopoeias are a tricky business, alright...?
The real question about U Goom is...who the heck decided it was a good idea to make their mascot, and thereby presumably all the sports teams, the "U Goom Goombas"? Or worse, the "Goomba Goombas"?
So apparently, a non-insignificant amount of people are pretty pissed at the Goomba scene having been changed-or, well, "censored", as I imagine they'd put it. So, that's interesting...kinda...sorta.
I think they were mad about the Goomba scene because the Sewer Goombas change actually makes Goombella look less capable. They make their snarky comments and she stands up to them and throws it right back at them. The original dialogue made it seem way more edgy and fun.
The way I see it, the original scene made more sense because these Goombas are essentially sewer thugs, i.e. a bad example to follow in the first place but one that fits the location. While this one is still fun, it does feel toned down for the sake of "You can't say that!", which I personally think hurts narratives more than they help them.
see, This is a "no win" situation. skawo already described it best, the original WAS kind of 'goons trying to hit on a unwilling woman and then attempting to beat her up whjen declined.' the thing is though, that's actually a good scene. mario's audience, much like tonic the hedgehog, tends to have a lot of younger people within it, and having a scene like that is surprisingly educational: there ARE savage sharks in the world who DO NOT CARE about the well being of others. BUT, right now, there is a large amount of people who don't want any kind of nastiness directed at ladies, and for good reason: it's kinda gross. this IS a respectable notion, wanting to teach people to be good to your fellow humans. HOWEVER, what tends to be forgotten in all the efforts to remove nastiness from media: doing that does NOT stop it in real life. people are people; some make bad choices, some make good choices. some are absolute darlings, others are irredeemable turds. if you don't have both examples, you cannot teach people how to behave, and what the right attitude is as well as the wrong one. that there is a PART of why people are mad about the change, if you remove the teeth from the gator, you can't convince people that danger STILL exists. the other part of people are more 'BUT MUH EDGE' Too Long Didn't Read: the reason why it's no win is if they keep it, they get whiny bad parents grousing at 'em. if they don't keep it, they get moral teachers grousing at 'em.
Honestly, with Goombas being so angry and willing to fight, I get why Goombella and Frankly don't protest about other Goombas being beaten: they grew out of their crappy background and don't want to associate with it anymore, kinda like how country folks tend to pester their former fellows who turned to big city life. Also, yeah, cool new expressions! And I guess Goombella and Frankly have figured out that Chest Ghost isn't really problematic, so they weren't scared
0:48 except the wiki articles don't exist anymore. Trying to look them up leads to the TALK pages that used to be attached to the now-gone wiki articles, where mods debated on whether the characters even exist. Frankly's words don't make it clear the names he's using are even real people. They're just names in his brain. Like, earlier today I was trying to remember the name of the blond guy in the Golden Deer of FE3H. His name was Raphael, but my brain kept saying Ronnie. That doesn't mean there's someone named Ronnie in the game. And that's the conclusion the wiki mods came to. 3:41 Alternate theory: the people who made the door used divination to figure out how long it would take for the world to generate the proper hero to defeat the demon inside, and then built the door intending it to last *exactly* that long. After all, if you are making a cage to contain a demon, the ideal time for the demon to escape would be, after all, when the hero able to defeat it is alive and well, and not a couple years after his or her death. Thus, even at its creation it was called The Thousand-Year Door, not because that's its age at the time of the game, but because that's how long it was intended to contain the demon inside.
They were probably moved to the "list of mentioned characters" article, which was where "Princess Eclair" (from Luigi's story in the same game) already was.

Yeah the original dialogue when you fight the goomba trio in the sewers WAS problematic...but that's kinda what makes it awesome because there's no WAY that should be in a Mario game. Gang warfare? Nooses? Gambling? Wealth inequality? Chalk outlines of a murder scene? Sexual predators? This ain't the nice, clean Mushroom Kingdom anymore! Rogueport sold me HARD on it being a wholly unique environment we've never seen Mario in before. So dangerous and so ripe for adventure. On the other hand, I like minor changes in dialogue because it means I'll get a different experience playing the original vs the remake, while still keeping the core of what I love about the game intact. It's encouraging to see these dialogue changes because it means the old version of the game isn't obsolete, and the new version of the game still has exciting little odds and ends to discover. I'm really excited to pick the game up soon!
17:15 What, are you, like showing us a picture? You can SAY it's a small, black key; I'm sure we'll find it. 19:50 Okay, so not only have you given us shapeshifting abilities, which is already kind of awesome to begin with, Mr. Purple Monster, but why would you that's a curse when we're only afflicted by it under really specific conditions, in a really short amount of time AND you're telling us how we can return to normal? You don't... Do you even KNOW what a curse is?
3:19 I wonder if this version of the game actually checks for all 7 crystal stars to open the door, since in the original it only checks for the 7th one
Danger for goombas (and all enemies) is 1HP, same as peril, at least in the Gamecube version Unsure if it's changed here or not. Mods def change it sometimes lol
0:58 Wrong professor, this is Frankly, not E. Gadd. 2:22 I mean, you definitely could have a study team about Cinderella, but in the sense of finding out the origin of the story... and it would be unnecessary because I bet it has already been done. 3:36 Funnily enough there's an actual reason why it could've been called Thousand-Year Door even back then, but I won't mention it to avoid spoilers. 8:12 Personally, not a fan of censorship in my games, but I'll obviously take it over not having the remake in English at all and luckily the Japanese version is unaffected. Hope this localization at least fixes most if not all the mistakes of the original one as that would balance it out to an extent. 13:34 Without using the Hazard Respawn Glitch, that is. 20:15 Wouldn't call it a theory when THAT straight up mentions "a black box".
@@Skawo Hm, two of them are made clear by Grifty, but the other two are admittedly ambiguous (though MarioWiki has no trouble taking a position on them without any sources cited :P)

Aaaaah, I'm IN LOVE WITH EVERYTHING THIS REMAKE DOES SO FAR! The visuals, the new expressions, THE MUSIC. This is probably one of, if not nintendo's best remake. 20:04 I mean, what do you think that lightning was?

3:40 Maybe it was named that because they predicted it wouldn't open for a thousand years, and surprisingly got it just about exactly right? 5:18 Nah, Bowser's army has GREAT healthcare. Go offscreen and back on, or two screen transitions away depending on the game, and boom. All better. Probably why so many enlist. 5:21 I mean, compared to the complete lack of direction they had before...it's better, at least. 8:34 Yeah ...there really wasn't anything to that scene other than an uncomfortably real depiction of misogyny followed by beating up the misogynists. Here, they're still idiots, but they're FUNNY idiots. 11:20 I feel like Goombella would know the answer to that one. Unless she got bonktised early or something...but you'd think her parents or someone would mention it at some point. You know, I really like how the black chests sort of foreshadow the actual deal with the Thousand-Year Door. Yeah, you have Frankly mentioning how "some say it's actually a monster," but the fact that they also have a running bit across the game where spooky trapped creatures promise you assistance only to heel-turn the moment they're free is...just exquisite.
10:21 I had an easy time superguarding them. Until the last one anyways, which wrecked me since I had one hp after fighting Gus and was too stubborn to heal. Though this wasn’t all bad, because I learned the partners actually react to mario dying, which is neat. Also game overing is slightly more forgiving 15:45 gotta be honest, not sure if i like the new themes, although i think i noticed the battle theme change slightly when I entered hooktails castle? I like new battle themes because it makes battles slightly less of a slog late game when i (inevitably) get 1 star point per battle 20:30 did… did you just bonk on the solid air in the middle of the door frame?
6:32 While I understand you don't have time for tutorials, I can attest that the tutorial is a bit more comprehensive than the original's. **They actively teach you about Superguards** for example.
@@Skawo the difference here is that you are trying to superguard without the world freezing. only when you fail to super guard enough times does it freeze to help you see when the timing is. its actually a very nice tutorial that tests if you are competint on using it before giving assistance.
How exactly does Frankly hold that map without any arms? How does Goombella type any of her essays or tie up her ponytail? Could I be dedicating my energy to more pressing questions? The answer is NO. Also, is it just me or is there a yellow tint or something on your footage? I noticed the X-Nauts white accents were looking very tan
