Most people tend to covet the second game in the Paper Mario series as pretty infallible, but I'm here to be the asshole that says otherwise.

Too many people take "not perfect" as "bad, and you're dumb for loving it."
@KendylTV
@KendylTV 5 лет назад
I feel like everyone’s complaint with the video is that he’s talking about a game that’s more of a cult classic, many of the reviews in 2004 were critical of the amount of backtracking and the level design in certain areas. TTYD has never been regarded as a classic by critics or general audiences, so this narrative that it’s viewed as “perfect” is a bit misleading. Everyone who wants it to be more popular aren’t being dismissive of its problems, but they’re more forgiving because of the experience they had enjoying the writing, humor, visuals, and battle system. I’d say its recent spike in popularity is more equal to Battle for Bikini Bottom, another game that is far from perfect but became a cult classic overtime, enough that it’s getting remade.

I love the ending cutscene, but the fact that it is unskippable is unforgivable. Every time you lose to the final boss (which will be several times because the fight is difficult), you have to sit through the whole thing over again. It really brought down the whole conclusion's pacing for me.
@dmgdgamer9759
@dmgdgamer9759 4 года назад
With how much I lost to the Queen, plus how annoying it was to sit through that cutscene for so long each time, I actually wound up backtracking out of the palace to do the Pit of 100 Trials, all the way through, to make sure I had enough power to take her out when I fought her again to avoid that cutscene over and over again.

I'll be honest, I don't really have this issue. I've beaten the shadow queen about 4 or 5 times since I was eight years old, and have only died in battle once, so I can't say I agree with it being "unforgivable." Inconvenient for some, sure, but not unforgivable.

The backtracking issue never hit quite the same for me. In Chapter 4 it makes sense to go along the trail multiple times. It is to highlight how hopeless Mario feels without his partners. They want you to run into those enemies. Then they want you to do it again with Vivian to get the hang of using her and to show her importance. Chapter 7's General White quest also has a reason. It is a sendoff to the story. You go to each area and talk to all the important side characters to reflect on your journney before taking on the X-Nauts. The game is not perfect, but hopefully my view can help others apperciate these moments.

So many reviewers do this. They oversimplify things. There's probably a name for this logical fallacy, but I'm not sure what it is. An example would be if someone said "Super Mario 64 is a bad game! @@j_c_93 Exactly. He also downplays chapter 6 by saying that the first half is just 45 minutes of throwing zero combat at the player. Once again, oversimplifying. Phantom Diamond Bug Fables has its own problems, most notably the decision to have Vi’s Beemarang able to shoot 360 degrees without giving the player enough visual information to actually aim the damn thing. That, and the decision to make the player switch between characters in a limited timeframe to solve puzzles, often led to scenarios where I’d come up with a solution immediately, spend five minutes failing to execute the solution, going online because I assumed I was doing something wrong, and finding out I was right, and I just needed to do better at aiming the Beemarang that’s damn near impossible to aim in the first place. The gap between figuring out a puzzle’s solution and the solution’s execution should be all but nonexistent in games like this.

Oddly enough I think Paper Mario: Color Splash has the best level design, for the most part, the only minor complaint I have is when Mini Stars are placed next to each other, but most of the time those are optional and just connect the paths more, which I guess is useful to get the Shy Bandit, otherwise the Backtracking isn't very tedious since the locations are generally shorter and easier to get to, The Mountain Sage and The Surfing Key Toads that you need are right at the start fo their Level, and Justice Toad is only a tiny bit farther. The Rescue Squads are able to be collected with actually zero backtracking. I honestly think the level design of PM64 is better than TTYD. There's a lot of non-linear exploration to do in many chapters. There's very often branching paths and very few completely linear hallways. It also has speedy spin to help traverse area's faster once you're more familiar with them. Helps replayability. TTYD though, a lot of the world is just linear hallways that you repeatedly backtrack through. 1 Pedal Meadows, 2 Boggly Woods, 3 literally hallways at glitz pit, All of Chapter 4, 5 Keelhaul Key, and 6 The Train. Color Splash certainly has some of the most unique worlds though. And it definitely excels at non-linear exploration as the whole map can be explored in a few different orders later in the game. It even had an entire level as a SMB3 throwback, which was awesome! Just is a shame that the core combat sucks and basically has no worthwhile reward.

I dunno it gets kinda hard for me to criticize the game because all of those annoying moments are purposely like that because from the perspective of characters in context to the story are also annoyed with the events happening and for me it kinda helped sell me on the moments and feel more attached to my partners who would vent their frustrations. Man it's been a long time, lol) for whatever reason. I don't know if I'd feel the same way trying it again now, and my Gamecube and all my games are currently packed away in a storage unit. Plus the first one will probably always take first in my heart for pure nostalgia reasons.

I think something to add onto the backtracking every chapter makes you do is just how bland every area in the game is in terms of level design. It's almost always just going in a straight line ("hallways with enemies"), vertical movement is severely limited in comparison to the first game (example, Flower Fields, while being my least favorite area in PM64, at least had a huge central hub to it at the beginning with multiple paths, rather than having two exits to the right and left like basically every map in TTYD). This is a problem I've always had in the last few years, and it bugs me just how quick people are too completely ignore it in favor of pretending the game has no issues. Thank you for making this video, this is something that needs to be put out there because this game, like many others, ISN'T completely flawless, and being a fan of the first game I've grown tired of its accomplishments being ignored in favor of just being grouped in with TTYD out of obligation, while endlessly singing the praises of the second game. Nobody is willing to give PM64 the credit it deserves because "it's good, but not as good as TTYD", and I'd love to see that opinion change by exposing TTYD's flaws to see them put on more even ground, and to work out what works best in both games to create a potential perfect fusion in a hypothetical sequel
@zjzr08
@zjzr08 5 лет назад
Maybe it's nostalgia but PM 64 is great on its own even without comparing it to TTYD -- TTYD is great too but is more different than better, having its plus and minuses from the 1st (although it's a bit more plus I guess).

Agreed, while I like TTYD I personally found it disappointing compared to 64. It does do somethings better but for everything it improves upon there are two things it does worse. PM64 just feels like a more complete game compared to it's sequel. Better characters, better story, cooler dungeons and boss fights, better environments, etc. It always baffled me that so many considered TTYD superior despite all the glaring flaws.

I'm glad someone like you were willing to address this issue. I have a huge issue with backtracking, specifically with the fast-travel pipes, because they make side-content so much longer than it needs to be, but people just tell me it's not that bad and I'm overreacting. Sure, they can have the opinion that the backtracking isn't that bad, but I was upset that they couldn't at least understand why I found it annoying. It's nice to see other people have the opinion that the backtracking in this game is really annoying, and not just the General White quest, which isn't even that bad when compared to other portions of the game, like you mentioned. The fast travel pipes could unlock immediately after you make it to an area, instead of when you get a new upgrade. The pipes could also appear much closer to the surface, so you don't have to go all the way down or back up when using them. Chapter 4 could've had multiple paths, each one progressively shorter than the last, leading to the Steeple, which open up as you play through the chapter. Maybe there are bridges that are out of commission and it's taking the shadow people time to fix it, once they are all turned back to normal. Chapter 5 could've had at least one branching path, closer to camp, that Bobbery goes out on before he becomes weak and needs the Chuckola Cola. The game's worlds are just simple hallways with no branching paths. The backtracking wouldn't be so bad imo, if there was more to the levels, and something to differentiate each trek through them when backtracking. But nope... it's the same portion over and over again.

13:53 I don't think that fan feedback is responsible for the direction that modern Paper Mario went, as Kensuke Tanabe just doesn't listen to it. Also I've never heard "TTYD-Fans" praising the paper mechanics of that game. This would usually be like one of the last positive points to mention, when talking about it. Positives that fans rather express are: -Interesting, sometimes emotional story -Unique characters and designs -Strategical combat (partners, badges, superguards etc.) -Unique/Creative locations The problem is that the community has been split in two by changing the series in its core and stripping it of unique characters and the gameplay it was loved for! I can recommend watching a video called "Why Paper Mario refuses to change" for further information on the development of the series.

Good points! I wish these things got brought up in more retrospective videos about the game, because you're definitely right. The Puni Tree and Twilight Town chapters nearly killed my replays of this game just with how tedious they get, despite still loving the game overall. I thing the love for this game mostly comes as it's an upgrade onto the original Paper Mario, where the mechanics and partners are generally the same, but with a much more interesting new world and villain than standard Mario fare. The improved writing and depth to combat really put it above the original for me. Even with the backtracking, it feels more like the version of the game I would recommend to people. Plus it's just way funnier and more entertaining, I know most people don't like text-heavy chapters but I absolutely love the murder mystery and battle arena chapters because the characters drive them so well.

All right after playing about 25 hours of Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door, I can officially say it's more like a love-hate relationship for some people. I love the combat, the story, and the environment. It's got everything most turn-based games lack in the department of keeping a person invested. While most turn-based games try to make combat engaging normally in the end game it always turns down to just using the strongest thing and whacking the monster over and over. Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door doesn't actually do that, because sometimes the strongest attack or special isn't the most useful or viable in a current situation. And with how the gameplay works this turn-based system is the most engaging I've ever played. The environments are extremely fun to explore and I think while the hidden items may be a bit to hidden, I do like they tried to pad the back tracking with something worth exploring. I don't really pick on the back tracking personally because the GameCube discs are incredibly small, and I understand they're trying to put the most content on the small things. Yes this is a long monologue on this game from a review that's years old, but I like this game enough to point out some of its good points. The only bad points I see in the game are the fact that since it's 2dish I find myself hating the platforming and sometimes the task that gives you a way to monotonous to be fun. A good example for me personally is the puny quest line, where you have to both escort the punies while also eliminating all the enemies and solving puzzles. For me the punies always got stuck on something and I even had a bug where two punies got stuck in the cage you're supposed to release them in so I had to figure out a way to get them out which took me 2 hours of trial and error. But for playing Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door for the first time ever, I think it's a great RPG and maybe the best turn-based game I played, but I do see where some people might have some issues with some of the minor mechanics and some gameplay issues. But all in all it's in really fun game.

While I agree with every criticism presented in the video, all of them were things I've already heard over a decade ago when the game first came out. Nobody that I've ever talked to about these games has ever pretended that the first two Paper Mario games were perfect, the most they've said was that they were better than the three games that followed them. Since Sticker Star and Color Splash got such a negative reaction from fans, they naturally aired their grievances in public forums like RU-vid and Twitter. This overwhelming negativity and a desire for a Paper Mario game that wasn't a complete and total waste of time and resources probably led to the misunderstanding that the first two games are seen as perfect by the community. Combine that with the fact that the devs hand waved the criticism by redirecting the fans to the Mario and Luigi series and I'd say those guys have a decent reason to be frustrated. This misunderstanding has led to a plethora of RU-vid videos that spread the notion that Paper Mario fans were looking at mediocre games through rose tinted glasses further just for the sake of building this strawman that they can boldly destroy with their contrarian opinions. It's gotten old by now but the machine'll probably rev up again once another Sticker Star sequel is announced. If the entire purpose of this video was to get the point that "TTYD isn't perfect you guys." across I feel like that point was already made several times over by now. Sorry if this comment comes off as rough man, I really do like your videos but this one just came off as pointless.

Hey man, no need to apologize for your opinion haha. I get it, and I think the idea of "has this been done before" is the bane of a lot of youtube video creation. I just recently played through the game because I hadn't played it in forever and I kept remembering that nearly every person I've seen speak about the game, comments in various forums, and even videos have been this surge of "wow what great game design", so I went in with both my own nostalgia and the high praise of others. I personally haven't seen a video criticizing the game this way, but I can totally understand if one exists, and concede to this one being pointless in that regard. I guess I've never really focused my videos on having a point haha. Like with my Sonic one, I ask if the games are good. That's a weird question in and of itself because that definition means so many different things to many different people. But it's just what I wanted to talk about lmao. Idk, I appreciate the honesty, and I get that idea of "well shit, this has certainly been done before". @@quintencornelissen2274 You're hating TTYD only because of its fans, not because of the actual game. And stop overrating TOK

In a way, it's kind of refreshing to look at the game's negative aspects for once. I still absolutely love the game, though.

This really drives home the reason why this game is so beloved, and I believe the answer is the characters and clever writing. Man, sucks that they NEVER go back to the one thing that made those first games so damned good........

I think one thing that highlights just how much time(backtracking) they squeeze out of each location is that TTYD chapter location is generally smaller than a Paper Mario 64 chapter location. They both have 8 chapters, but the main story of TTYD manages to be roughly 30 hours long and Paper Mario 64 roughly 20 hours.

There's more backtracking in 64 than people will admit

This game isn't perfect, but I don't think anyone actually would say that and want to be taken seriously. No game is perfect.

That reminds me, there are these people who don’t even acknowledge the flaws of this game. I wasn’t around to see all of but those are the people who took their love for Paper Mario too far.

When there are people so stupid that they say this game is perfect, yes people would say it's not perfect and want to be taken seriously. Go direct your outrage at the people overrating this game.

Exactly. Flaws, while they're things that should be avoided if possible, make stuff interesting. They attract attention and create conversations. At the very least, they make a game that might otherwise be boring (in areas) pretty interesting.
