The paper pot transplanter is designed to allow small farmers to plant many small transplants such as onions in a short period of time. This video demonstrates set up and use.
Equipment profiles are provided for give new producers ideas and information on equipment use, safety, and tools to increase efficiency. They are not an endorsement of individual products. For more equipment profiles and other information for new farmers visit extension.psu.edu/start-farming and theseedfarm.org .
Funding for this project was provided by a grant from the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA, Grant # 2009-49400-05869.

The Urban Farmer also showed this, with the divit thing which all looked easier, however I liked the fact that you mentioned the real life situation of if the soil is not finely particled it will not work as well as it could. Love the video ... thank you!

The other parts of this system - the dibber and seeding tray set - can be explored on Richard Perkins' channel, where he explains the whole process far better.

Awesome thank you for sharing. Can't believe this video from 2012 and I'm just hearing about it now! I subscribe to Growing for Market so I didn't realize I was so behind the times. I am very interested in this system, but worry about dealing with residue in the beds. I have a feeling when this works its amazing, but if and when you run into issues its a real pain.

Amanda Comeau I was more worried about residue in my beds like half decayed cover crops and weeds and how they would interfere with the operation of the planter. The video showed some very residue free and very finely tilled beds which I don't have at my farm. This tool does look awesome though.

Love it and would help us plant our huge garden much quicker but after seeing the price tag on it and how much the paper chains cost,, I will pass on it. Would take my garden a long time to pay for that machine and each new chain paper pots.

A question: what happends with the paper after collecting the vegetables?. have you to remove from the soil or may be it degrades quickly?

@thetessellater9163

Great Idea, but the way the seedling cells get pulled out of the tray and fall sideways, potentially damaging the plants, is an area that needs a re-design, surely? Also, the set of different sized hole seeding trays, and the one-hit dibber, are tools well worth adding, having bought into this system.

Where can this setup be found? I seen at the end funding was from the USDA what must a person do to get this kind of funding? Also what is the total cost for planter, paper pots, and all the other items that must be had? Thank you.

The Canadian version is far superior because it makes the indentation for the seed and you can spread all the seeds on the planter and it places them perfectly without all the manual steps that you showed

what happen next with the paper chain pot? is it still there when the plants are ready to be harvest? or it degraded?
@marshwetland3808
@marshwetland3808 6 лет назад
Paper should degrade, generally, if there is moisture. However, I have seen a vid by Curtis Stone (growing beets) where he says sometimes it constrains the beet into an elongated shape. That said, he grows very small beets. Possibly if you grew normal larger beets, they'd break out. And it was only a proporation of them, he said.

5:18 It doesn't matter much but you are doing thing wrong. the metal piece you put under the seedlings is supposed to rest completely in the tray because it is designed to provide a smooth transition between tray and the device not to have them drop like that.

A very nice concept and machine...but way over priced at over $3000. Then you have to continually buy the paperpots.
@brentottoson6974
@brentottoson6974 6 лет назад
Planter itself is $1099 USD plus $20 shipping from paperpot (dot) co. Certainly not for the home gardener that plans on a salad here and there. For the market gardener, the time savings most report on RU-vid pays for the planter and even the $3099 starter package (which includes the planter, 40 trays and 300 chain pots, enough for 79,200 plants) within one season. The pots cost .01 - .025 per plant with shipping. Again, the time savings more than pays for the extra cost for the pots. Then again, maybe it's a market signal for those that believe the machine is overpriced to jump into the market and make one less expensive. Yes?

I find this tool interesting and a neat concept. Unfortunately, it is very pricey to get started. For what is involved the transplanter should be available for around $200.00. The trays are not too bad of a price, but the other tools are over priced. The divot tool could be made for next to nothing with a small piece of plywood and some dowel or even large head screws. I would love to see something that could be put behind a SCUT. I am just a hobby farmer right now, but looking to get into year round growing in a greenhouse with bare ground. This would be able to simplify the process but, way too expensive compared to other methods.
