We shoot the very misunderstood and woefully under appreciated Gewehr 88, the German Army’s first small bore smokeless powder infantry rifle. When it was adopted after an urgent development period by an army commission in late 1888, it was the most modern infantry rifle in the word. The “Commission rifle” was the first military rifle ever to utilize a rimless cartridge, in the iconic 7.92x57mm chambering that (in a later and higher pressure variant) is very well known as “8mm Mauser.” Most countries were still using black powder rifles when the Gewehr 88 entered service, but because it has a “modern” chambering, the Gewehr 88 has been unfairly judged against more modern rifles. For a first generation smokeless powder rifle, it was revolutionary. It’s flaws were many, but it deserves appreciation in the context of its era, and not subsequent generations of small arms development.

I think the G88 is a super underrated rifle. I love my Turkish one, it's so incredibly smooth. It deserves better regard than it seems to normally. Also, I super dig the Austro-Hungarian hat, I wish it were possible to wear one as an everyday hat without looking crazy to people.

That's the first time I have seen an 88 properly handled. I was impressed by just how fast and smooth it was. So smooth in fact that I actually looked hard, because for a moment I wondered if I was looking at a straight pull system.

The 88 really has one of the nicest, smoothest bolts out of any military issues rifle, except perhaps the Krag. If only the bolt handle was a few centimeters further back!

I have a custom rifle that was built by Eduard Kettner in Koln, Germany that started life as an 1888 rifle. It has a shorter and lighter half octagon barrel by the Bohler-Stahl, custom sights and double set triggers. The gun can't weigh much more than five pounds and is still in the 1888 Patrone cartridge (the .318" bore). The gun is very accurate and a lot of fun to shoot but makes an excellent stalking rifle.

A minor grammatical error in the title card: Papierpatronen schießt das Gewehr 88. (Paper cartridge in German would be a compound word made from Papier (paper) and Patrone (cartridge), compound words are usually written as one: Papierpatrone; and since Papierpatrone is the one doing the shooting in 3rd person singular the correct verb flection of schiessen is schiesst (or applying older orthography rules: schießt)) Also, Mark Twain was right about the German language…😂

Just as a point about the M88 v G88 on their bolts. It was very much early days with "smokeless" powders. I think there were serious concerns about the ability of straight pulls, within the metallurgy and manufacturing constraints of the day, to safely contain the high chamber pressures without a catastrophic bolt failure.
@JuanelMecanico_1
@JuanelMecanico_1 2 года назад
For the cartridge the Austrians used in the M88, the action strength and design was perfectly acceptable... The 8x52R isn't zippy by any stretch.

Gosh, the rimless makes the Mannlicher very smooth. The 1886 straight pull can be a struggle.

Another fascinating and informative video, Brett, thank you. I must say, the uniform standards in Iraq seem to have changed substantially! I see something I never thought about before, though. With that really cool drop-out clip, that leaves a large hole in the bottom of the magazine well. Do we know anything about problems with mud and crud getting up in there in the field and locking the weapon up? As a former grunt, I know that if mud *can* get into a place, it *will* get into that place, and it will ruin your entire day when it does. It was nice to see SGM Calvin still on duty!

In 1888, the concepts of what modern battle would be like were very different from what came to be in 1914 and after. In the German doctrine, there was supposed to be a successful environment of the enemy army and then a decisive smashing of the enemy in a battle that lasts at most a couple days. Lots of movement and maneuver, soldiers would be still in formations, albeit more spread out and looser than Napoleonic formations. Moving forward 20 years, the Germans realized the magazine hole for the clip to drop out was a way for dirt and mud to get in. The vast majority of Gewehr 88’s were converted to stripper clip loading and the hole in the magazine sealed off. My rifle is one of the few that escaped conversion for some reason.

Hello Brett, I watched your Whitworth rifle video. I wasn't clear to me whether you were using hexagonal bullets, or using a standard shaped bullet with the paper patch engaging the rifling?
@papercartridges6705
@papercartridges6705 3 года назад
I use a cylindrical bullet in the Whitworth, paper patched, as this was more common for British military ammo. I swage them on a Corbin press. They are more accurate than I am able to shoot.

The cases are old Berdan primed Turkish brass that I pulled the Turkish steel jacketed bullets, and reloaded with IMR 4337 and a cast round nose 220 grain, which closely resembles the original pre-spitzer version of 8mm Mauser. There’s no way I could afford to shoot this much if I was buying new ammo!

It's not a Mauser rifle, it was a commission rifle, created without the consent of the Mauser family by the German government. It contains a modified Mauser action, but is NOT a Mauser.

These are my reloads, with lead. I try to match the performance of the original round nose bullet. I don’t think the round nose jacketed bullets are available anywhere, but I’d love to try the original load someday.

They are hand loads with a hard lead alloy cast bullet. Finding the correct jacketed bullets for the original Gew88 bore is almost impossible so I have to cast and size my own.
@joshtroutman1462
@joshtroutman1462 3 года назад
Is that by chance still in the .318 bore, or was it opened up into the .321-.323 bore?
@papercartridges6705
@papercartridges6705 3 года назад
It’s a worn .318 bore. It has the chamber enlarged to fit the later spritzer bullet but the bore is still the original. While it could probably handle full pressure modern 8mm (if it was going to blow up, it would have already) I prefer to shoot my version of the 88 cartridge with the big heavy bottle nose bullet.

I agree, the gewehr 88 is often talked bad about and compared to designs it shouldn't be, such as the Mauser 98. But in being fair, if you compare it to the the Mauser 1889 that Belgium adopted. IMO, between the two rifles, the gewehr 88 is inferior. If you compare cartridges, 7.65x53 Mauser of the Belgian 1889 mauser isn't much different than the patron 88 cartridge on paper... But to me the stripper clip loading system is much smoother with the Mauser... I don't have a Belgian 1889 but an Argentine 1891, the same rifle really and comparing side by side with a gewehr 88, the Mauser 1889 patten is better... I often have problems with gew 88 enbloc clips but I've never had a problem with stripper clips that are just as old as my gew 88 enbloc clips. But I digress... The gewehr 88 is a great rifle IMO but it could've been better for it's time, im certain of that.

Ive got an 88/05. Honestly its smoother and more accurate than the 98s ive shot. I had a primer fail and vent gas and its updated gas shield deflected it away from my face. Its not a bad rifle at all.

it should be Papierpatronen "schiesst", not "schiessen", das Gewehr 88. it´s correct grammar to say "mit Kommissionsgewehr" but better drop in a "dem" as for "mit dem Kommissionsgewehr" , that makes the whole sentence sound more stiff, official. you can also write "Commissionsgewehr" with a "C" for added authenticity.

Shit, this is years later; you arent spanking her hard enough. As a WWI historian, Ive read manuals for second line soldiers, and this weapons is all about slapping and hitting it. You slap the bolt up like it owes you money, you move your head away and slap or hit (if necessary) the handle back, and then you proceed to quickly slap or hard palm the bolt forward and slap it down. None of that wrapping your hand around it and making a lever for quick precise shots like a British rifle. This gun was made to be man handled by the roughest and toughest Heer could put on the field. It was almost made to be handled like you're trying to break it, and lots of old straight pull Austrain guns work on the same principle. Calm, soft, intrained hands werent meant to work it.
