I think the best advise I ever got on paphs was from a grower here in Australia that has a huge nursery with hundreds of paphs ,is to put them in the smallest pot possible that holds their roots, pot for root size not the size of their leaves. Since I did this my collection has done so well.

I live in the desert, normally 0 humidity, and winter is more like spring in greener places, summer we get the most humidity so I grow my paph in moss and she loves it. I love how the bark looks so I put some on top of the pot lol. Nice to see orchid growing channels! Good video.

I see. You actually pot your paphs the opposite way round from me. I pot in bark with sphag on top. So much depends on environment and climate, doesn't it! Thanks for watching and happy growing.

Well, I think to myself sometimes : how can anyone really want to see another repotting video. But they are always so popular that it is hard give up making them 😊 And, yes, you never know what you are going to find in that pot until you tip the plant out. This video took ages to make because I had to reassess what size pot to use several times and, of course, that meant going searching for an appropriate pot (never fun), washing it and sterilising it 🙃
@FernandaNascimentoOrchids
@FernandaNascimentoOrchids 4 года назад
@@GardeningatDouentza I suppose repotting videos are so popular because we can always learn something by watching other ways and procedures. And, yes, massive repotting videos like the one you did are very hard and take a lot of time with all the organizing. One thing I noticed and forgot to mention, apart from one which seems to be a miniature? all your Paphs have lots of beautiful fans and leaves.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 года назад
@@FernandaNascimentoOrchids You are right. Yes, P. henryanum is a miniature, which I forgot to mention in the video. The paphs have done well for me and I put that down to their slow-growing, minimum-intervention nature. If the instructions for plant care are along the lines of "do A and then leave your plant alone", well, I am just an expert at that 😊😊😊. Some people just have to check and recheck but my talent is to leave things be 😂 🤣😂 🤣

Thank you for your kind words. Josh painted that pot for me a while back and it has a Minecraft character and sword on it. I don't like to pot in it because every time the pot needs to be washed it rubs off a little more of his painting so using it for a paph is ideal ❤️❤️

Very nice video, thanks for some insite to your methods. I've been growing orchids since the 80's and have gotten into Paphs recently. I showed a older webinar from AOS about Paphs by Paph Paradise here in the States, to our society. I repotted my 4 older Paphs last month and saw a lot of what you have shown. After repotting my little Paph bellatulum album #2 x denienati var. album #2 with 4 growths it has already started 2 new spikes! I believe Paphs will do better in smaller pots and repotting more often. Live & learn. :-)

nice job. It is interesting how we all have a different method. I use a somewhat larger bark, larger perlite and no moss, more akin to how Ed grows his. I also repot so the media comes up to middle of the lowest two leaves on the newest fan (with the exception of one seedling that started its adult roots between leaves three and four, so it is potted rather deep but seems no worse for wear).
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 года назад
Hi Michael and, yes, there are different ways to do it. I noted that Ed and the UK Orchid Society don't use sphagnum but I find it just helps with the hydration. It does mean more frequent potting though. You must water frequently with that mix. You're in California, right?
@michaelmccarthy4077
@michaelmccarthy4077 4 года назад
@@GardeningatDouentza Florida. but I keep them indoors so the temperature is more moderate (though probably far warmer in my home than you would find comfortable 😉 ). When the orchiata is new, I have to water like every other day. After a few months, it holds more moisture so the watering frequency goes down. Right now, I water maybe every 5-7 days, though I might mist the surface after three. I also use pots that are taller, so a 4 inch (10 cm) wide pot is 4.5 inches (11 cm) tall, versus the normal 3 inches (8 cm) tall.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 года назад
@@michaelmccarthy4077 Wow, you go to a lot of trouble for your paphs. It would need to be some exceptionally beautiful orchid for me to water anything more than once a week. With my paphs sometimes in winter they get watered every two weeks because they are still more than moist at the end of the first week. I guess what you have really pointed out is how we need to adapt our growing methods to suit our environment. Happy growing!

Hi Ronja. Yes, I think frequent repotting is the way to go with paphs. I was lucky my roots were in good shape considering how long the plants had been left. Is that paph from Dresden still alive?

Now for my phaps i actually add some soil in the mix i was told that they are semi terrestrial, and they seem to be doing good so far, well better then when i had them in leca i was going them semi hydro. now in bark along with the soil. what do you suggest should i repot them? Thanks

Hi Maria. Paphs are semi-terrestrial orchids but they are not usually grown with soil in a home environment. The trick will be how to keep them moist, yet not wet in that medium!

Hi Rachel, I'm a new subscriber from Cork. I found out about you from the channel " Roger's Orchids " and was delighted to find an Orchid grower in Ireland. I fell in love with orchids when I got a present of a phalanopsis at Christmas. At the moment it has one leaf but is still alive! ( I think!!) I would love to find the scented orchid " Sharry Baby" and was wondering if you had any ideas on where I might find one here in Ireland. Love your channel 🥰 Maureen.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 года назад
Hello Maureen and you are very welcome to the channel. Unfortunately I would be very surprised if you found a Sharry Baby anywhere in Ireland. There are a couple of garden centres around Dublin that often have a selection of oncidiums but I have never seen the wonderful Sharry Baby. Mail order from Germany is the way to go! Sorry I can't be more help.

@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 года назад
It is a real problem getting decent orchid bark in Ireland. Some fancy garden centres, incuding Johnstown in Naas, often have small bags for sale but it is impossible to find the big bags. The westland one is good only for cymbidiums or other terrestrials. If you only need a small quantity and are happy with medium bark, reptile bark from pet shops makes a good substitute. If you do find a supplier of large bags of pine bark, do let me know!
