These are at the top of my most loved orchids list. Even when they're not in bloom I could just sit an look at them.

Certainly those with mottled leaves make great plants.

Thanks for sharing, I look forward your Paph blooms in the future, not many is on the RU-vid orchid world, maybe due to this slowness... BTW, if you are looking for a "fast" Paph., try to buy the Paph. Maudiae 'Femma' hybrid, easily available from Holland nurseries, sellers. Bought one in March in bloom, one fan with one bloom, and by the beginning of September, managed to finish the new growth and in bloom again and started to work on the third fan. So maybe there are some hybrids out there which are a bit faster growing than your avarage Paph. My vinicolor type seems to be a bit slower to mature the new fan, but then it is generally a bigger plant than the 'Femma'. Love those minis, will look out for some in the future, I am sure!!! Planning on trying out Phrags? Have a nice day! BR, Maria

Given that species named clones are often the best/strongest largest flowered versions from a batch of seedlings, that would make sense as my maudiae is my fastest grower.

When I really look at my paphs, I remember that I quite like them - then I put them away and forget about them again.

I talked to a guy who grew all of his paphs in live sphagnum moss. I don't know that I would go to that extreme, but it would be a great way to keep their moisture just right.

Hi roger , I do like the look of the paphs but there to slow for me. When I first saw your video,s you got me into dendrobium,s I now have 73. I really only grew cattleya before, so tempted to try vanda type. I never mounted an orchid before watching your videos I now have 34 and are looking well in particular the den parishii. Keep the video,s coming. Tony

Hi Roger sorry for my english i am french. First thank a lot for your videos i ve learned a lot. I have a queqtion if you can answer me i appreciat it. I bought 10 days ago my first molted paph like yours green and white. It is in bark there s little traces of salt. I can t see inside because the pot is dark. I want to repot it but i am afraid to lose the unique flower. What do you think? And it s ok to give fertilizer the entire year twice a month like you said 100 ppm, she doesn t have rest ? Thanks again.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 6 лет назад
Paph roots are precious and if lost are very difficult to recover. I have repotted many orchids in bloom and have never lost a flower. If you think there may be a problem with the media, I would repot straight away.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 6 лет назад
A little fertiliser often is ok but less in Winter when the growth slows down and Phaps grow very slowly but continuously.

thanks for the clear and dark pot tip :-) I keep mottled and green leafed plants , all together . Am also not a fan of watering . Nice setup , all in one place . And you keep the humidity high ! I cannot grow a Disa for the life of me , even in South Africa :-) Oh yeah , please be patient , and it works for you . Put them one side and almost ignore them :-) Growing from seed is such an effort , though obviously rewarding . Am not stalking you :-) What society do you belong to ?

Hi Roger, I have a question about my Paphiopedilum I bought it at an Orchid show in April of 2017 (Paph Moussetianum x Paph Voodoo Magic x Eric Meng) it had bud and once it opened it was a beautiful burgundy flower. The leaves are nicely mottled. It has never re-bloomed, but the leaves look healthy and it has two growths that I originally thought would be flowers but all they have done is grown. One is now 11 inches tall with 5 growth nodes and just above the node there is one leaf and then the stem keeps going up to the next node and it has one leave and the stem keeps growing up etc. The other growth is about 9 inches tall and has 4 growth nodes with the same basic growth pattern. I am new to orchids and I asked one of the members at the orchid society show in April of 2019 if I should cut off the growths and plant them in their own pots and hopefully the nodes would help the new baby plants to grow roots. The lady told me to never cut a tall growth like that off of a paphiopedlium. So, I have a beautiful orchid with two tall growths but no blooms. Some of the older lower leaves are just starting to show their age and starting to yellow just a bit on the outer edge. I am planning on re-potting it this spring.... would you suggest that I keep the two tall growths, or should I cut them and see if I can get 9 new paphiopedilums? I learn so much watching your videos and maybe you have already discussed this topic on a video that I may have missed. Any guidance or wisdom you can share with me about my Paph is truly appreciated. Happy growing Roger . Thank you, Dee Ann

I have never heard of a Paph. growing like that? It may be worth heading over to 'Eds Orchids' channel as he knows far more than me about these types.
@deannknox9499

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Hi Roger, I did ask Ed and he had never heard of it either, but thank you for the suggestion :) maybe they are not actual nodes, I found this on line ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WkR9J84lA8w.html and it is growing up like mine. She refers to them as the plant attempting to put out roots but since they do not grow in air and need to have their roots in a medium the roots stall. Perhaps in it's native environment the "tall growth" would fall to the ground and the little nodes or baby roots would start a new plant and it is a second way for the plant to ensure propagation. As I stated I am pretty new to growing them, so just not sure why it is growing the tall growth. I am not sure if there is a way for me to send you a picture of mine or not. I do appreciate your reply. Have a wonderful day Roger and happy growing!

I've seen your email with the pics. I will pass them on to our OS specialist - he's been growing Paphs for many many years and has produced some awarded hybrids himself. He is also chair/president of the Paphiopedilum Society. I will get back to you (eventually).

My my, you are quite productive, video-wise. Can just barely keep up with you. Fingers crossed that the one of your daughter with bad roots will make it ;)

It's bad enough to loose an orchids when you've got loads but when you only have a few - not so good. I will try and save it - it has perked up and the leaves look firmer than when it went in the moss but it needs some new roots and again, slow.

Hi Roger what feed strength are you using on your paphiopedilums.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 7 лет назад
Somewhere between 100ppm and 150ppm - I feed twice and then flush. But mine don't do as well as most of my other orchids so don't take that as a 'recommendation'. I think I let them get too cold last Winter so they are in the house this year until the Spring.

@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 8 лет назад
They are naturally terrestrials so their roots would be in the ground - mainly leaf litter and the like under trees. (Some do grow on rocky limestone cliffs where there is constant water but they still tend to root in pockets of debris.)

Hi Roger, what is their potting medium?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 6 лет назад
I use a mix of the small grade Orchiata bark, sphagnum moss and some sponge-rock (large perlite). I use clear pots but tuck them inside non-clear pots to keep the roots dark.

That's very good niews! I thing it would be better for them if you give them a little bit more light,they are not so "shadeloving" as many people think,even more than Phalaenopsis.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 8 лет назад
It doesn't come over very well on film but they do get quite a bit of light as they are near the edge of the bottom shelf which has very little above them - in the afternoon when the sun comes around they actually get filtered sun through the shade netting but I agree that 'shadeloving' does not mean 'deep shade', just not in the sun.

to warm and to much light?

Possibly but most of the mottled leaved Paphs are classed as warm growers.
