My parents spoke yiddish all the time...my generation speaks English, Israelis speak Hebrew....I guess if you speak German and are Jewish you might appreciate Yiddish songs and maybe the Russian Jews children....so what do you think?

@@Ursugarspice I'm Scottish and not Jewish, but with enough knowledge of Germanic languages to appreciate Yiddish (with a little help) - which I do, hugely! These songs seem to touch my very soul - I know these people, their hopes and fears, their loves, their sorrows, exactly as if they were here with me now, my own kith and kin. I don't know why that should be, exactly, but it is probably because of a shared experience of poverty and the struggles - and the joys - of my early life I find reflected in the words of so many Yiddish songs. My strong feeling is that we owe a duty to these people to keep the memory of their rich language and culture alive, which the Nazis tried to wipe from the face of the Earth. Not only for that reason but also because it enriches our culture too.

Unfortunately you'll find he is very much human. A much worse thing to realise and to remember.

it's a young boy, who sell "papirosn" (cigarettes) to eat, to live ! his family : mother, father ans younger sister, disapeared, he is alone, without hope..... wrote in 1920's. My father came with his mother and father in Paris in 1925, to escape poverty and antisemitisme in Poland.... so in 1942 they have taken my grand-parents for ever. Sorry for my poor language

I don't have the lyrics in front of me, but the song is about a boy who sells cigarettes to passers-by in the street to make a living. In this particular variant of Yiddish, the boy (the singer) uses a word for cigarettes that is derived from Russian ('papiros(e)n') rather than from German ('cigarett(e)n'). The chorus begins with the boy exhorting the passers-by to buy his cigarettes: "Oh bitte, koyfet, koyfet papiros'n!" - "Oh please, buy, buy some cigarettes!".

Early twenties of the 20th century. In these years there were terrible pogroms done mainly by Ukrainians, Russians, and Poles, murdering an estimated number of 250,000 Jews, thus leaving tens of thousands orphans. This song is about one of them, a young boy staying barefoot in the rain, soaked wet, who is trying to make a meagre living by selling cigarettes (papirosen) to passers by.

Did he look for leftovers of cigarettes to make his own, handmade, (but?) ‘second hand’ cigarettes? I live in The Netherlands and I have seen people collecting cigarette ‘leftovers’ from the (dirty) streets so they can continue smoking without paying, at least partly, avoiding the rising prices for it (and taxes as well). Even during the corona pandemic... .

Well it’s Yiddish so it has no proper nation to represent it, however the picture is of a synagogue in Vilna, so I would assume Lithuanian.

It’s author originated from a town called groznow in western Poland but Xae’s Corner is correct - it is for the Jews of eastern and Central Europe as it is written in their language
