2022 was my Octavia E. Butler year. I loved both "Parable of the Sower" and "Parable of the Talents". I highly recommend "Kindred". "Bloodchild and Other Stories" is excellent for Haloween.
Thanks for this! I also haven't yet read Le Guin or Butler, but Ive got a handful of their books. In fact, I've had this one on my Kindle for at least a year, and this video may just be the kick in the pants I needed!
You're going to be left feeling even flatter after finishing Parable of the Talents because the 3rd book in this intended trilogy, Parable of the Trickster, was never finished. I don't know how far along on it Butler was before she died but there doesn't seem to be any intention to publish even the incomplete version. Which I would love to read -- I've never wanted to find out what happens next so badly on any series but this one.
My favorite dystopian or post-apocalyptic novels? 1984, Fahrenheit 451, I am Legend, The Stand, Lord of the Flies and I will throw in the Time Machine. This Perfect Day by Ira Levin was a book I read as a teenager and loved-but I was a teenager. I recently bought the ebook version for my Kindle and will reread it after many years .Hopefully I will have the same pleasurable experience.
Thanks for your list. I’ve 1984, Fahrenheit 451, I am legend, and lord of the flies from you list. Never heard of perfect day so I’ll investigate that one. Thanks
Thank you for this review. I've had this book (and Parable of the Talents) on my kindle for literal years and just hadn't gotten to it. Of course, there were about 4 years where I was warned off from reading it because it might be "too much" at the time, but I hope we are past that now. I hope to get to it soon.
Be interested to hear your thoughts on it. It does feel like its hitting scarily close to where we’re heading. So I can see why you may have put off reading it.
I read Kindred last year and loved it (but I hated the TV series, which changes a lot). I don't know if it counts as dystopia but I love Robbie Arnott's The Rain Heron.
I have heard the tv show of kindred isn’t that great, exactly for the reason you mentioned. The shows popped up on Disney plus here the Uk… but I think I’m gonna just read the book. Also, you’ll be pleased to know I have order Demon Copperhead in paperback released here may 3rd I think. From watching your videos I know it a fav of yours!
