The song is Paradise City by Guns N' Roses from 1988. In the U.S. a lot of upper middle class people have had homes that big. Also people could rent homes like that more cheaply than buying them. I understand that most East Asians live in quite small homes compared to many Americans. Back in the early 90's my French teacher said that a Japanese man looked at his one story, 2 bedroom, one bathroom house with a moderate size front and back yard and said "you must be rich". He wasn't. High School teachers in the U.S. don't make much money. It was just the comparison. Also, most people in U.S. make monthly payments to buy homes. It can take years or decades for them to fully own their homes. I agree the karaoke seen was exaggerated. Yet, sometimes people really not very well done performances. The point is that he broke out of his shell and let loose. He made an effort to be more than a math nerd. Ok, hope this explains some things.

Oh, I should that in 1998 homes were cheaper than they are now. Housing prices have really exceeded personal incomes. However, the description of the film says this party is happening at a rich kid's home who wants to a throw a big party for some of school mates.
