I went to US to pursue my Postdoc in a mediocre US University and I realized what I really missed by choosing to do PhD from IIT. I do not mean that all PhDs are bad, however, it is very rare to come across good PhD thesis from IIT. In most of the IITs, the course work is not given much importance and The qualifiers exam is just a joke, whereas these two things are taken pretty seriously in any US university. At this juncture I feel that a good course background is the most important component to prepare you as a better researcher. I also observed that at times the projects given in the course work of good US universities are better than PhD topics selected by IIT professors
I agree that coursework is given less importance in India. Though the requirements are less there is nothing stopping the students from taking more courses. They want to take minimum courses and the advisor wants them to get on with research. Courses and tough qualifiers give usa PhD breadth and depth. Even European PhD’s have this low breadth problem
Plus the corporate culture in the us which celebrates meritocracy. I have been a software engineer in india across two MNCs in india where u have to have 3 yrs in a same position to get promoted and here is a guy becoming a ceo in 10 years. Plus the education system, social structure in india where research has not been celebrated at all. I failed in gate exam and i am extremely proud in that which paved me a way to be in the US for my masters and after seeing the quality of education and professors my perception of the US is bolstered. Even when i decided not to take a job after ms and decided to pursue a phd, i heard many of such comments like why are u not taking a tech job of fat paycheck? Why do u wanna have a phd? Why do u wanna spend 5 yrs in a university? Oh u r already 30 and u will be 35 while u graduate? Funny thing is some these comments are made by some of the top professionals in india. Even some of these comments are so strong that even i got confused but i am extremely happy that i am pursuing the phd in the usa from pitt even though its challenging but cant express the joy when my experiments gave me the results that i anticipated in my research . Great talk prof. Ur points are really really important and there are hardly any channel in youtube which tells about phd and phd life in the usa. Great work. Just shared my experience as i am probably some one unique who saw the mediocre professional life in india, did his ms and now pursuing phd in two different universities and worked under two brilliant professors in the usa.
It depends on an individual. Anything can go for a toss even with PhD. A lot of PhDs in India are useless and many of them are clerks. Also, with this Hype PhD has a chance of being the same as diploma. This was the same thing with bachelor's degree. You are talking about the 1% who are very genuine. Also don't get me wrong but we Indians (the ones who are educated very well) are great at getting big jobs but can't solve problems despite the fact we are paid in 6 digits and we are Harvard or MIT graduates. I also feel we must move ahead from coding and mathematics and get into physical science and engineering. Because climate change can be solved by these factors
Excellent video professor. !! I used to see reports from Indian govt. about faculty positions lying vacant in several IITs and I used to think that why they cannot hire their own PhD graduates. Later on when I got to be an RA in one of the IITs, I realized that the IITs don't trust their PhD graduates at all. IIT Roorkee specifically announced that they will not be hiring their PhD graduates as faculty, whatsoever. What I witnessed personally was that IIT PhD students mostly are no less than lab labourers, enriching the portfolio of their advisors and are made to work upon problem statements that have already been solved or innovated in US, Europe or other parts of the world somewhere. Stress was more on publishing for the sake of publishing and not on quality. As a result these IIT or similar PhD graduates are rarely hired by the industry in India and they further tend to return to their home states and join as lecturer in govt. colleges or NITs etc. Saturation in PhD degree has already started to take place in India and people do it because they didn't get anything credible from their masters and infact master's was done due to poor dividends from bachelors. Phd degree from abroad is now very much craved for so as to join as faculty member in India's top technical institutions.
You and Anima mam are motivating STEM graduate to Get Research, She's doing same for AI and ML. Anima Anandkumar mam is IIT Madras Alumni and working as Professor at Caltech and NVIDIA AI as Chief of Researchers.
I'm coming to USA for my master's degree in materials science and engineering for Fall 2022 intake also, I'll pursue further PhD in the same domain. I want to become a full time researcher in the materials science domain. ✋✋
Ph.D. is great to do. I would also recommend it to people. But it has nothing to do with becoming a CEO. Sundar Pichai, Satya nadella, mark Zuckerberg, jeff Bezos, Carlos Ghosn do not have PhDs. I would say if you are interested in research, go for a PhD But If your goal is to make money/become a CEO or get a green card then it can be done without Ph.D. as well. I have seen people entering to PhDS with these goals and later getting frustrated and disturbing their mental health
While agree PhD from US is better than that in IIT's but there are good research taking place in IIT's and IISC also; yes they are concentrated in small area now, but we are looking to solve India's problem. Wait a little we will also make news some day.
Hello sir currently I'm pursuing CA and after that I'm thinking about MBA in usa but after watching this video my future vision create new branch of PHD I'm confused now please would you make video on MBA vs PHD...?
Most fortune 500 company CEOs have Masters degree,, not PhD. PhD from schools like Stanford comes with exposure to business and entrepreneurship ecosystem, with opportunities for startups. Some take their MS or PhD thesis to startups. A genuine passion to learn, engage in deep research,, apply critical thinking to solve complex problems drives one towards PhD, not to be CEOs. One area where I have seen a PhD is almost mandatory is in Biotechnology and related field.. BTW, one can get a taste of research in Undergrad or Masters (thesis) programs in US universities as well but it is not pursued by many.
Master stroke information sir.... Thanks to enhance my confidence towards PhD..... Dream to discuss with you sir about my US PhD planning and your mini word suggestions please love this comment sir....💐💐💐
Hello I am going for MSc in data science in Germany after BE CS bangalore. I choose Germany due to lower costs and easy visa/immigration. Europe also has top college and big german companies. Does it make sense to come to USA for PhD if I am getting a decent pHd in Europe like hec Paris, kth sweden, TU munich and german public universities. Also PhD here are shorter Especially Netherlands Germany Switzerland
Thanks a lot Sir 💐, its very informative and so inspirational for me, with your blessing sure i have to join PhD in Structural engineering this fall semester.Thank you very much Sir 💐🙏
My company never hires PhD's. The reason being there is no difference in ability between a person with a Master's and a PhD. Plus ANYONE who has a PhD in a very difficult field who is under 30-35 years old is a joke. Not enough experience in their field to merit the degree.
Hello sir, I have done masters of commerce from gujarat University. I'm also appearing CA final exam in dec 21, then I want to do masters or phD from USA. Can you plz suggest me the subject for phD or I should do masters first and then go for phd .
Sir, I watched your video on doing a 2nd PhD. Can we do it from Stanford and Harvard? I read on Quora, that the professors don't want to take students for a 2nd PhD.
Your words contradicts the present situation. If Phds will be CEOs in future as per your "mark my words" then why IVY league MBA colleges will run business courses? Current trend says mostly MBAs are CEO and most cases enteprenuers are not defined by PHD degree.
Hello Prof. Can you please make a video on Ph.D in Operations Research. I am really interested in it but I am not sure wheather it comes under STEM. And degrees in STEM have better chances for immigration. So I am confused wheather to do Ph.D in Operations Research or in Industrial Engineering. Both offers the specialization I want to work on.
nvidia ceo, qualcomm ceo, apple ceo, adobe ceo, intel ceo, google ceo, microsoft ceo, broadcom ceo, tesla ceo, facebook ceo are not PhDs correct me if i am wrong.
However , I have a question. Will it be applicable for top IITs and IISc also (where PhDs are usually looked down upon : exception is IISc though)? Parag Agarwal did his PhD from Stanford which is already top-notch.
Sir how can a person be motivated for higher study in india because the professor make course work so boring and they dont even make learning interesting . Even IIT professor from NPTEL their most of course work is boaring .
Sir do you think Dr.Parag Agarwal is still in the green card backlog or he has got the the green card under EB1 category because he joined Twitter only in 2012 which is not a very long time for someone to get a green card?
@@DesiAmericanProfessor Sir is it guaranteed that if you graduate from certain top universities like Stanford etc. You can come under the EB1-A green card category ? Because EB1-B category is for tenure track proffesors like yourself and EB1-C is for Managers who have worked outside US for atleast 1 year?
What I am trying to say is don’t get over excited just because of a one off case. This is an exception not the norm.Look at the person who he has replaced, a college dropout.Of course there are lot of phds and professors who are now starting out on an entrepreneurial journey as well, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that a PhD has to be pursued ONLY if you have A pure passion in that field and are willing to dedicate your life for it.That should be the primary goal, whether someone becomes a CEO down the line is immaterial.I hope you are getting the drift. If you want to be a ceo you are better off doing a MBA or just bachelors. The skills that you learn on the job during a 5 year period that would have otherwise been lost while pursuing a PHD,
Dear professor can u make a video on astrophysicist career Or a physicists career ,, can we do a job in nasa Or somewhere after being a astrophysicist... Plzz reply to my question... Plzz professor
Hello sir. Thanks for your useful videos..Can we do PhD along with job..I am coming for MS spring 2022 at age of 28..With 4 yrs work experience in India..please guide us sir..since I will be 30 after MS..How can I do job along with PHD
@@DesiAmericanProfessor no what I am saying is don't say PhD is be all and end all for success. There are lot more people who reached higher levels of success without having even a bachelors degree.
Sir I am sharad M.tech in computer science age (38) looking for doing P.HD from USA Will it be possible for me to get admission in PHD program. If yes please give me some clue how I can get admission
Which Ph.D. did Sundar Pichai do then??!!!! The thing is some event happens and people start attributing it to their own biases. I am not against Ph.D. I believe both academic institutions and industries should give more value to Ph.D. graduates and improve the environment for people to carry on their research. But when UG and Ph.D graduates are almost paid the same at entry level, what value are these industries giving to someone who has dedicated almost 7-8 years of their lives after graduation!!!
I never said PhD is needed to be successful. I know that Bill Gates, Steve Job, Mark Zuckerberg do not even have a bachelor's degree. This video was about the qualities one can develop because of the PhD program that can help them become successful
