Paragliding Maui,Hawaii. Flying from the Haleakala Crater, soaring above it and landing on the beach in Kihei. Pilots: Alex Merk, Abhai, Marty Herne, Tim, Jack, Justin. December 25, 2009. Flight duration 56 min. ALOHA!
yeah, you definitely want to fly with the locals, proflight is the school on maui. haleakula launch is at 10,000 feet, so you fly through several different layers of atmosphere, creating a greater risk of wind shear. But occassionally the waves line up, and off you go! That was an Aloha video for sure!
Man that was awesome. I used to live in the Kehei area, so it was nice to se some familiar landmarks. Question though - I'm just looking into getting my P2, so I'm not familiar with the flight rules yet. But I thought the approach into Kahului was from the SW, which you are coming fairly close to. Do you have to familiarize yourself with the airspace quite a bit? Or does GPS help with this? What about the tourist helicopters? I'm sure they are VFR, so they have to give you the wide berth?
just go and fly! If you are a certified paraglider...if not find a paragliding school in your area, its about $2K to get signed off plus all teh gear $4-6K
Curious what the law or liability is regarding landing on the beach where people may not suspect that something may be landing from the sky? It be horrible to land on an adult or child and injure them.
