I really liked your comment "Don't start the next turn until you're comfortable with your speed". Every intermediate skier looking to get better needs to hear that!

I am from Romania but I live in Austria. This year I took ski lessons. Even though I'm 40, I don't think it's too late. I'm sorry to say that I learned more from your tutorials than from a ski course. I can say that the teacher climbed me up the mountain and left a lot in front of me, and I was far behind with the same mistakes. I can thank you for making these videos. Because there isn't a day that I don't look at you. You are the best ski teacher in the world! How do you explain, how do you talk to people. Thanks. Greeting Mihaela

Keep in mind that the leadership of the Communist Chinese Party intentionally exported the SARS-2 virus while isolating its own cities. They got the results they sought, tremendous financial loss, death, decline in the West. Yes, I saw a news video on the excellent snow in Scotland's ski area that are required to remain closed.

Another great teaching video as we come to expect from a world class coach. I love how you tell Kelly to be patient when making her turn. Today’s skis are designed with lots of side cut so the natural turn is built into the ski. So many skiers pay lots of money for that side cut but they don’t use it. Instead I see them trying to force the ski around quickly instead of allowing the ski to follow it’s natural radius. In powder and mixed conditions it is much more difficult to force the ski. In skiing, mountain biking and kayaking you got to go with the flow. Momentum is your friend ⛷🚵🙏

Thank you Deb for your great videos. I came back from skiing in Austria recently. It was going well ( although I was the last one in the group 😂) until I had a mental breakdown on my last day when I panicked on a steep slope. Watching Kelly progress gives me hope that one day I will ski like her.

I had a breakdown my first day skiing after 4 years of not this past December. My beau and son were patient but....I finally sent them to their black diamonds and made my way down the long blue run..only took me 90 minutes. I did make it in time to meet them for lunch (priorities). I have not given up and got my ski legs back but remain on easy slopes for now. Deb's message of not giving up at any age has been key for me!!!!!

you have all these videos by deb and many others by leading experts in the field. Even if you can't do, be aware of it, and think about it and someday you'll be there. The best for beginners and intermediate without a doubt in my opinion are Debs (i wish sometimes little more expert views, but i understand her intent with these videos) ... study and watch each video many many times ... personal instruction helps but ... a good skier will self analyze and self learn and self crtique ... don't try to do it all at once, pick something, a drill, a thought, and work on that and then go on to the next .... the beauty of skiing is it is always changing and you never stop learning ... In a sense, even tho i'm 63, skiing since 5, i'm an intermediate too, cuz "carving" is now the new technique and i'm still learning something new every day. 58 years ago, carving was not even thought of ... i'm not an instructor or certified at nothing, i'm just a skier. i come back to debs videos all the time to work on the basics, because she makes me think and if you don't master the basics, well ...

I wish I'd seen this before I encountered my first powder day. It was knee-deep, and in the end I had an absolute ball, even if I did my very first yard sale tackling something a leeeetle bit steeper (at least I got a round of applause from the blokes on the chair going overhead...)

Thanks for this Deb. I started skiing at 58 - 6 years ago and still don't think my arms are right. I notice this video is two weeks ago (Feb 2021). Have you done one with Kelly that incorporates her arms yet? Or is one coming up? I can't see one on the channel.

Hiya Debbie! Love the videos. One thing I'd appreciate is to hear a bit more of your decision-making process when deciding what drill/terrain you use. You went with the J-turn drill @1:49. My interpretation is that you wanted to focus on turn-shape speed control. Is there something specific about Kelly that made you choose this one, or is it your go-to for introduction to variable conditions? Additionally, I'd love to go into more detail with alternatives you might use depending on the age/learning style/transferable skills of the student. Can't wait for the next video! :D

Ya, good stuff, good questions. I don't think my answer will be very satisfying however. I have years of experience and knowledge. I trust this. With that said I am very comfortable walking onto the slope as a blank slate, totally open to what the moment and situation will bring. Same with my videos, I don't have an agenda really, I get on the hill and take what comes. With Kelly I try to be very present with her and with the conditions on the mountain. Then the lesson takes shape. I am very open to the terrain of the very moment. I match that with the mode of the participant and also match that with the skill level of the person I am dealing with. I must meet the person where they are at at every moment. Then good things follow. I have had success with this approach however I am not sure it would work without lots of mileage and experience teaching skiing.

@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong That makes sense. Going into my level 2 exams, I'm trying to see things in terms of the classic PSIA progression framework, so I'm trying to find ways to adapt your lessons to an exam setting. However, in my actual lessons, I tend to use the classic framework as more of a suggestion than a guideline. Thanks so much for the quick response!

Would you be able to do a video on how the feet work inside the boot please? Although I try to push through the balls of my feet, I sometimes notice my toes curl upwards - I suspect because I am in the back seat and I am trying to compensate and use ankle compression to pull my shins into the fronts of my boots, instead of projected my weight forward. I suspect I should feel my toes pressing down along with the balls of my feet? Any advice greatly appreciated :)
@petercreagh8797
@petercreagh8797 3 года назад
When I was learning to ski I found by pressing my big toes hard on the base of the boots I would always remain centred over my skis. If your heels lift and your foot twists inside the boot when you turn its too big.

I would only add the steering wheel/driving analogy: turn/swivel the head in the direction you are intending to go. The eyes ‘talk’ to the brain and anticipation through the eyes brings the body into position better/sooner.

Yes yiu are correct. I have made it clear in the earlier videos in the series I am not concerned with her arms yet. She can not learn everything at once and her arms are not causing problems. Her leg work focus is benefiting her much more at her stage right now. But the are mo us will come in before too long. Good eye however.
@josephgdraper
@josephgdraper 3 года назад
@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong I have been holding my tongue regarding the arms, hands and upper body. But by building a foundation from the snow, ski foot interaction, you are getting so much good stuff happening by working from the feet on up. The steering of her feet (especially her inside foot and knee "opening the door") is really getting her parallel turns going and the bicycling is helping the foot to foot transfer of pressure. The mileage in chopped up crud is awesome for building confidence. Proprioception is built on challenges to control the firing of all those muscles! Go Kelly!
